Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I ignored a soothsayer and as a consequence was stabbed to death by conspirators, led by my supposedly dear friend. Who am I?

Answer: Julius Caesar

Not fair! They attacked me! All I had was a stylus to defend myself with! What happened to "the pen is mightier than the sword?" Maybe next time, I should be careful about who I trust and don't trust. Only, there is no next time for me. "Then fall, Caesar!" I am dead. I've been dead for a long time, actually. Didn't you know? I thought that Shakespeare guy told you about me. "Beware the Ides of March." Caesar did not, and therefore died, supposedly saying the immortal line, "Et tu, Brute?" ("And you, Brutus?)" Julius Caesar died on March 15, 44 B.C. at the hands of conspirators led by Marcus Brutus.

The conspirators were afraid that Caesar would become king and gain too much power, so they formed the plot.
2. I died because a Norman lord suddenly decided to become king of England, and invaded the country in 1066. Maybe next time I shouldn't get shipwrecked off the coast of France. Identify me.

Answer: Harold Godwinson

He said that I swore over some saint's bones in Normandy that he would be King of England when King Edward died. I honestly don't remember. All I know is that I became king when I was offered the crown. Then William poked his fat nose in and fought me at Hastings. Yes, I died. Don't you have a history book? You should have learnt about me by at least third grade. William claimed that King Edward, Harold's predecessor, had promised him the throne, and Harold had sworn to serve him.

When Harold ascended the throne, William said he broke his oath, so the Normans set out to conquer England. Harold Godwinson fell in battle at Hastings, when William the of Normandy invaded England and became William the Conqueror.
3. Traitor! I'd still be alive if it hadn't been for him. John de Menteith betrayed me to the English. I never saw bonny Scotland again. Who am I?

Answer: Sir William Wallace

I evaded capture for years, and but was turned in by a treacherous Scot! At least I have the satisfaction of knowing that Robert the Bruce finished the work I began and liberated Scotland. Did you know that I've been immortalized in various works? And that the film Braveheart is about one Sir William Wallace? Yes, that's me, although I do wish they had found a better looking actor to portray me. William Wallace was a Scottish knight who fought the English for freedom.

He received little help from his own people, but the spark he lit grew and burst into flame. Scotland rose and fought, but too late to save her hero.

He was caught and executed in 1305.
4. I came back from that prison island also known as Elba, and then got defeated at Waterloo. I was a great French leader! Who am I?

Answer: Napoleon Bonaparte

I fought dozens of battles and won so many. Then those nasty countries ganged up on me and then my generals turned against me. They sent me to rule the entire region of - tiny Elba. I returned to France in 1815. However, Wellington hit back, and hard.

Then the Prussians came, and I, well, I lost. Yes, I lost. Maybe next time I should stay wherever they placed me. Wait, that's what I did. I was left at St. Helena and stayed there. Napoleon Bonaparte was a French general, and rose to such power that he was declared Emperor.

He ruled France for 15 years, then Elba for one year. After his return, he again ruled France for the One Hundred days. Finally, he was decisively defeated at the Battle of Waterloo by the British, Prussians and others, and was exiled to Saint Helena, an island in the Atlantic.

He died of stomach cancer.
5. I held the country back together when it was being torn apart by civil war. Then, a disgruntled Southerner shot me when I was watching a play. Who am I?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

For years, I struggled with the American Civil War, a war that cost the more American lives than any other. On April 14, 1865, I went to watch the play "Our American Cousin". It was Good Friday, but did he care? No. John Wilkes Booth shot me to death. The Vice President and Secretary of State were also targeted, but Johnson's killer turned tail and ran, and Seward was only wounded. I died. Maybe next time I shouldn't go watch a play.

Abraham Lincoln was president of the US during the Civil War. Because the North triumphed over the South in the Civil War, many angry Southerners turned their anger towards the President. Although the plan was originally to abduct Lincoln, the conspirators changed their minds and decided to assassinate him. He was shot once in the back of his head and fatally wounded. He was the first president to be assassinated.
6. My death was the immediate trigger of World War I. Who am I?

Answer: Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria

A Serbian student called Gavrilo Princip did it. Why? I did him no wrong. Maybe next time I should get a bulletproof car. Well, sure, I advocated increased federalism and stuff they didn't like, but they started the fighting. They killed their king and now are killing Austrians. And that's what happened in Bosnia. The assassination was the result of tension between Serbia and Austria.

When the Austrians annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Serbians became worried, and some students planned to strike at Austria. Since the Archduke was viewed as a threat, they tried to kill him. Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophia were shot and killed in an automobile on June 28, 1914.
7. I promised the Fuhrer that Berlin would never be bombed. Maybe next time I should be more careful and think before I speak. Berlin was bombed. What's my name?

Answer: Hermann Goering

I fully believed that the Luftwaffe could take care of the British and American pilots. Weren't they well trained and taught to fight to the death? So why on Earth was Berlin bombed from 1940 to 1945? My reputation plummeted after that. The Fuhrer stopped trusting me.
Hermann Goering, the most senior Nazi leader under Hitler, was amazed when British bombers unexpectedly appeared over Berlin on 25 August 1940. The closest British airbase was far away ...
8. I was commander in chief of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. I was ambushed and killed by American pilots over the Solomon Islands. Who am I?

Answer: Yamamoto

The Americans knew our code, so when news of the flight was picked up by their radars, they knew what I was doing. I was shot by Rex. T. Barber, although a fellow called Lanphier claimed to have done it. Really, these Americans aren't smart, always quarreling among themselves, even during a war. My death caused our morale to drop, and theirs to rise.

The ironic thing is, I was going to the Solomon Islands to boost our morale, not theirs. If I could go back in time, I guess I should have stayed put. Admiral Yamamoto died on April 18, 1943.

The military operation to kill him was called "Operation Vengeance" by Americans. Yamamoto was a prominent Japanese leader, so his death greatly affected the Japanese.
9. I was king of England. I wanted to marry a divorcee. I abdicated. Who am I?

Answer: Edward VIII

What's wrong with "Queen Wallis Simpson"? Why won't the people allow me to marry the woman I choose? So what if she's been divorced twice? Of course, they didn't listen. So, I abdicated and was succeeded by George VI. It's funny how things have changed since then! Charles, Prince of Wales and son of Elizabeth II divorced and then married a divorcee, his sister Anne divorced, and his brother Andrew divorced. Because Wallis Simpson was a American divorcee, a union between her and King Edward VIII was frowned upon.

The government even threatened to resign. He abdicated in 1936 and lived the rest of his life with his wife, Wallis.
10. I was a famous singer. I died on February 11, 2012 from accidental drowning.

Answer: Whitney Houston

My top hit "I Will Always Love You" from "The Bodyguard" is the best-selling single of any female singer as of 2012. I am also renowned for many songs, including "The Star Spangled Banner". I was found dead in a bathtub, and my death was ruled as accidental drowning. People say that it may have been related to heart disease and drugs. Maybe I should have been more careful. Whitney Houston's death affected audiences all over the world greatly, many tributes being dedicated to her, and her songs played over and over. Whitney Houston left behind a multitude of beautiful songs for us all to enjoy, a remembrance of one of the top singers who ever lived.
