Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who proposed marriage to Grand Duchess Olga on May 18th, 1914?

Answer: Prince Christopher of Greece

Staying with the Tsar for a family visit at Livadia in the Crimea, Christopher "greatly admired the Grand Duchess Olga". Incidently, she said she would think on it. Nicholas stomped on it, saying she was too young--although weeks later they were in Romania for a visit, and the parents of Prince Carol of Romania were wishing for a marriage between their son and Nicholas' eldest daughter.

It was also assumed that one day she would end by marrying the Prince of Wales (who evidently admired Olga)--who ended up abdicating the throne in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson.
2. Which Grand Duchess could, in a sense, wind her parents around her finger?

Answer: Grand Duchess Tatiana

In her book Unpublished Memoirs, family friend Anna Vyrubova says this about Tatiana: "She always knew the desires and requirements of her parents and tried to meet them, and for this the younger children called her 'The Governess'."
3. What was the name of the soldier the sixteen year old Grand Duchess Maria had an innocent crush on in 1915-1916?

Answer: Nikolai Dmitrievich Demenkov

In letters to her father, Maria jokingly referred to herself as "Yours, Mrs. Demenkova". Olga often wrote about Maria fussing over Nikolai, who Maria called "her Kolya". It was a sweet, innocent, almost child-like romance; when he went back off to war, Maria sewed him a shirt. Tatiana also developed an infatuation with a soldier, a Dmitri Malamar, who gave her a dog, Ortino, who shared the family's fate--she was hung for her barking after the execution squad stopped firing.
4. It is widely said that Grand Duchess Olga was in love with her second cousin, Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich. Is this true?

Answer: False

No, it's not! They liked eachother as cousins, but later the serious Olga couldn't stand his fast lifestyle. People cite Olga writing "All hope is lost" when she found out Dmitri was involved with the murder of Father Grigory (Rasputin), but it's quite easy to tell why: a family member kills someone who you hold so high in your life, this man is the only one who can save your brother, and now you think your mother may be next.
5. Who was the lesser-known woman to have said she was Grand Duchess Anastasia?

Answer: Eugenia Smith

"I spent hours and hours in the writing," she wrote, "days and nights of introspective experiences, of grief and horror." Of course, we know she (nor Anna Anderson, nor any of the other infamous clamiants) was Anastasia. Natalya Bilikhodze is the "newest clamiant," declaring her "identity" in 2002.

It was all about the money, and from all anyone knows, none of this tsarist fortune ever existed!
6. Which of the daughters had medical problems?

Answer: Grand Duchesses Olga and Anastasia

It's true, Olga and Anastasia had some problems--it wasn't just Aleksey who was ill. Olga had anemia and suffered from what we'd probably now call bi-polar disorder (in 1915, she suffered a nervous breakdown), and Anastasia had scoliosis; her aunt, Grand Duchess Olga Aleksandrovna, wrote that she remembered a nurse coming to massage her niece's back and naughty Anastasia ran off and hid somewhere, so the family had to search for her for quite a long while before that massage started.
7. To which of the sisters did the little dog Jemmy belong to?

Answer: Grand Duchess Tatiana

Tatiana already had a dog, Ortino; Jemmy was given to her by Anya Vyrubova, and Tatiana said that her little sister Anastasia, who recently had lost her dog Shvybzik due to a brain disease, could have it. So, yes, it was Anastasia's dog--but really it was Tatiana's.
8. Whose regiment was the 148th Caspian Infantry?

Answer: Grand Duchess Anastasia

Nicholas appointed all of his daughters as honorary colonels to regiments, all on their name days; Olga's was given on July 11th, 1909, when she was fourteen: the 2nd Elizavetgradsky Hussars. Tatiana's was given January 15th, 1911, when she was fourteen: the 8th Vozenesky Lancers. Maria's was given on July 22nd, 1915, when she was sixteen: the 9th Kazansky Dragoons. Anastasia's was given on December 25th, 1916, when she was fifteen.
9. Out of the girls, who was Nicholas' favorite?

Answer: Grand Duchess Olga

While both parents tried not to favor their children, Olga was definitely her father's confidante. Imprisoned she always walked with him. After the revolution she explained why it all happened, and what he did wrong; it helped Nicholas come to terms with it all, and he greatly appreciated her intellect.
10. Here's one that sounds easy, but it may not be to some: what day was the Imperial Family slaughtered, and where?

Answer: July 17, 1918; Ekaterinburg

Commonly said in history books as July 16, the Imperial Family was actually woken up around one in the morning on the 17th and at about 2:30 were all mercilessly slaughtered by the order of the Ural Soviet, with complete "coverage" by Lenin. Trotsky was surprised when he found out Lenin had ordered the entire family to be shot. "Ulyanov (Lenin) said it would be better that way, no live banner for the Whites to rally around," he was told.
