Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Montana Senator Jon Tester won the senate seat for the Democrats in 2007, and has retained it ever since. In his youth he suffered an accident that throws up a bizarre image resembling an episode in the movie Fargo. What happened to him?

Answer: He lost three fingers in a meat grinder

Yes, it was the loss of three fingers in a meat-grinder accident that distinguishes him. He seems to have done pretty well since then; he served as a music teacher and farmer before going into the state senate.
2. Our next character is fictional; not surprisingly, since Edward Lear invented him. In fact I'm not really sure WHAT Lear intended him to be, but we know that he had an Aunt Jobiska, and that he lost this body part in a swimming accident. Can you be more specific as to who Lear was talking about?

Answer: The Pobble who has no toes

The Pobble had a full set of toes until an accident while swimming led to the loss of them all. Lear makes it clear that we will never know what happened, but as the poem indicates, Pobbles are happier without any toes.
3. You all remember the Three Blind Mice, and the Farmer's Wife, who cut off their tails. By contrast John Wayne Bobbitt suffered a more painful accident at the hands of his wife. I'm not going to ask you what she did, but can you remember her name?

Answer: Lorena

Lorena Bobbitt was convicted of emasculating her husband, but she got off for reasons of insanity. Since then both have had their 15 minutes of fame, but have also encountered various problems with the law -- though recently John suffered a severe neck accident.
4. You'd think that you would need both your feet to operate pretty well if you were going to a top-level cricketer. However this spin bowler for England continued to play for his country when a speed-boat accident while he was swimming led to the loss of four of his toes. Who was this player, whose heyday was the 1960's?

Answer: Fred Titmus

Middlesex spinner Fred Titmus lost four toes from one foot, but fortunately retained the big toe, so did not lose the critical balance on that leg. He continued to play cricket, retiring in 1976 a decade after the accident. Seven years later while watching a match he was called to step into the breach by his former county captain and played a single match -- thus giving him the remarkable record of playing a first-class sport in five consecutive decades!
5. Evander Holyfield is one of the great boxing champions, but he is missing a small part of his anatomy. Do you remember what are the circumstances that led to the loss?

Answer: Part of his ear was bitten off during a fight

Mike Tyson bit off his ear lobe during their second fight in 1997. Tyson lost the fight and was disqualified for his actions, later losing his license to fight.
6. Somehow you would expect an astronomer and alchemist to be a man of thought not actions. But while still young, an alcohol-fuelled duel led to a world famous scientist losing a body part; in this case his nose! Which person was the unfortunate victim?

Answer: Tycho Brahe

Brahe went through life after the duel with a prosthetic nose. Despite rumors that it was gold or silver, it seems more likely to have been made of brass. He died of a bladder disease and his student Kepler appears to have borrowed his findings -- giving rise to the suspicion he may even have been murdered.
7. Almost everybody would be able to identify the character who lost his hand to a crocodile. Peter Pan had cut it off and fed it to a crocodile, who had developed such a taste for him that it pursued him as avidly as Hook was chasing Pan. So let's focus on something else; what was the name of the actor who played Hook opposite Robin Williams' adult Peter Pan?

Answer: Dustin Hoffman

Spielberg's re-imagining of the Peter Pan story has Robin Williams playing an all grown up Pan. I read that Hoffman based his demeanor on William F Buckley, and the original Hook bears more than a passing resemblance to Charles II of England.
8. I recently saw a play called 'The Cost of Living' starring a sensational young woman named Katy Sullivan was born a bilateral, transfemoral amputee. She has appeared on 'My Name is Earl' and many other roles. Katy , but she has achieved fame as an actress and also as what?

Answer: She is a multiple paralympic medal winner at national level

Katy wears metal feet akin to those of Oscar Pistorius. She has won the US 100m championships four times, and is a spokeswoman for equality for the differently abled. And she is a great actress; be sure to catch her if you can.

I was sent the following story about her at her birth. When her mother awoke, she asked her husband to she asked him to tell her the truth about the birth. He told her Katy was born without her lower legs. She responded: "That's it?" And, that's been Katy's mantra ever since.
9. An almost-90 year old bridge player was selected to play bridge in the 2017 world championships for Italy -- making him comfortably the oldest player to have competed at this level. 40 years ago he would have been one of the very top rated players in the world, but he does have an unusual missing body part -- a finger from an accident. Who is he?

Answer: Benito Garozzo

Garozzo teamed with four players under 35 (including Giovanni Donati --who at age 18 or so, is probably the youngest player ever to represent Italy). The event took place in August 2017.
Curiously Garozzo is older than any of the participators playing in the Senior event!
10. In the movie 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' King Arthur comes to a bridge which he is forbidden to cross. He is forced to fight a duel and cuts off more and more parts of his opponent's body, while his rival claims 'Tis but a scratch!' Who was his opponent?

Answer: The Black Knight

John Cleese played the Black Knight (though he had a stunt double named Richard Burton -- no, not that one) who played the role when the Knight was down to one leg since Cleese found the balancing act hard to achieve.
