Penny Chenery (born Helen Bates "Penny" Chenery 1922-2017) took over her fathers breeding and racing operation when he became seriously ill in 1967. The Meadow Stable in Virginia had been neglected during the 1960s and was not profitable. Penny turned this around and the Meadow Stable bred Secretariat who became became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years in 1973.
Not only did Secretariat take the Triple Crown but won numerous races in 1972-73 and in 1999 was honoured with a US Postage Stamp. Penny Chenery received many Thoroughbred racing awards during her career, becoming a Board Member of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association based in Lexington, Kentucky.
