Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with what should be an easy one. Who was the world's first murderer, according to Scripture? (Genesis 4)

Answer: Cain

Cain is the correct answer. According to Scripture, Cain killed his brother Abel out of jealousy, as Abel's offerings were more pleasing to the LORD. They were both sons of Adam and Eve. After Abel's death, Genesis 4:25 reports Eve gave birth to another son, Seth.

Details about Cain killing Abel can be found in Genesis 4:1-15. The same chapter goes on to tell of another murder. The second murder involved Lamech. However, the name of the murder victim is not given. Details about the second murder can be found in Genesis 4:19-24.
2. Out of the four names below staring with the letter 'C', which one was a spy who returned from Canaan with a positive report for Moses? (Numbers 13:30)

Answer: Caleb

Out of twelve spies sent into Canaan by Moses, only Caleb and Joshua came back with promising reports. Scripture states the ten other spies who gave unfavorable reports died of a plague before the LORD. Caleb was the son of Jephunneh and he had a daughter named Achsah. In honor of Caleb, one of the districts of Judah was named after him.

The story of the twelve spies is told in Numbers 13 and 14.
3. Out of the four names below starting with the letter 'C', which one was a son of Ham and was cursed by his grandfather Noah? (Genesis 10:6)

Answer: Canaan

Canaan, was the son of Ham and grandson of Noah. According to Genesis 9:20-25, Canaan ended up being cursed by Noah. Scripture states Noah issued the curse after Ham saw him drunk and naked in a tent and went and told other members of the family about Noah's condition. Scripture goes on to tell of Ham's two brothers, Shem and Japheth, taking a garment, and going backwards into their father's tent and covering his nakedness. Because their faces were turned away, they did not see their father's nakedness.

Genesis 9:24-25 tells of Noah awaking from his sleep, and knowing what Ham had done to him, announcing: "Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants he shall be to his brethren."

Canaan, of course, is also the name of the land in which the Israelites would eventually take up residency.
4. According to Genesis 14:1, who was the king of Elam who was involved in capturing Lot and his family? (Spelling is per the KJV and NKJV as the NIV has a slightly different spelling.)

Answer: Chedorlaomer

Chedorlaomer was king of Elam, as per Genesis 14:1. (In the NIV, his name appears as Kedorlaomer.) Chedorlaomer reigned in the days of Abraham and was allied with three other kings who were involved in hostilities with five other city kingdoms, according to Scripture.

Genesis 14:11-17 tells of Abraham, who was known as Abram at the time, assembling three hundred and eighteen servants and defeating Chedorlaomer and freeing Lot and his family. While the NKJV and the NIV states Abram defeated Chedorlaomer, the KJV states he was "slaughtered".
5. According to Ruth 1:2, who was the son of Elimelech and Naomi and the husband of Orpah? (The NIV has a slightly different spelling that does not begin with the letter 'C'.)

Answer: Chilion

Chilion was the son of Elimelech and Naomi and the husband of Orpah, according to Scripture. (In the NIV, Chilion's name appears as Kilion.) In addition to Chilion, Elimelech and Naomi were also the parents of Mahlon, who was married to Ruth.

According to Ruth 1:3-5, Elimelech, Chilion and Maholon died, leaving their wives as widows. No details are given about the cause of the deaths of the three men.

It must be pointed out that nowhere in Scripture does it specifically say Chilion was married to Orpah. However, Ruth 4:10 states Ruth was married to Mahlon, making it obvious who Chilion was married to.
6. A king of Judah was known as Jeconiah and Jehoiachin as well as a third name that starts with the letter 'C'. What was the third name of the king, as per Jeremiah 22:24-28? (The NIV does not use the king's third name.)

Answer: Coniah

The king known as Jeconiah and Jehoiachin was also known as Coniah, as per Jeremiah 22:24-28. However, in 2 Kings 24:8 he is known as Jehoiachin. In Jeremiah 24:1, he is known as Jeconiah.

I suspect he was also called Coniah as it is a possible short form for Jeconiah.
He was the son of Jehoiakim and Scripture says he did evil in the eyes of the LORD.

As stated in the question, the NIV does not refer to the king as Coniah.
7. Out of the four names below starting with the letter 'C', which one was the father of Nimrod as well as a son of Ham and a grandson of Noah? (Genesis 10:6)

Answer: Cushan-Rishathaim

Judges 3:8 states Cushan-Rishathaim ruled over the Israelites for eight years as "the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel."

Scripture goes on to tell of Othniel leading the israelites to a military victory over Cushan-Rishathaim, thanks to divine intervention. After Othniel's defeat of Cushan-Rishathaim, Scripture states Israel had peace for forty years.

Othniel served as the first judge of Israel.
9. What was the name of the Persian king who granted permission to the Israelites to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple of God? (Ezra 1:1-2)

Answer: Cyrus

Cyrus is the correct answer. His name appears a number of times in the Old Testament, but the account of his decision to liberate the Israelites is largely found in the book of Ezra. According to Scripture, Cyrus decided to grant permission to the Israelites to return to Jerusalem after his heart had been moved by the LORD.

Cyrus was the head of the Persian empire and after he defeated the Babylonians, one of his first major decisions was to free the Israelites. According to Wikipedia, his empire extended from the Mediterranean sea and the Hellespont in the west to the Indus River in the east. At that time, it was the largest empire the world had seen.

Apart from the fact he was a high-ranking official in the court of King Ahasuerus, little is known about Carshena as his name appears in only Esther 1:14. According to Wikipedia, his name is derived from the Persian word for 'wolfish'.

Answer: Chalcol

Chalcol is given as an example of a wise man, but according to 1 Kings 4:29-31 he was not as wise as Solomon. Other examples of wise men given in the passage are Ethan the Ezrahite, Heman and Darda. However, Scripture states they too, were not as wise as Solomon.

According to 1 Kings 4:29, God gave Solomon "wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore." Scripture goes on to state Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt.

Chelu was certainly not alone when it came to having a non-Jewish wife. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state those who had pagan wives included 113 men, 17 priests, 10 Levites and 86 others. See Ezra 19:18-46 for details.
14. Out of the four names below starting with the letter 'C', which one, according to 1 Chronicles 27:26, was the father of Ezri who was responsible for overseeing agricultural work in the time of King David? Answer: Chelub

Chelub was the father of Ezri who was responsible for overseeing agricultural work during the reign of David. (In the NIV, Chelub is known as Kelub.) However, little is known about Chelub and his son Ezri as they are mentioned in only 1 Chronicles 27:26.

There is a second man called Chelub in Scripture. He was of the tribe of Judah and is described as a brother of Shuhah in 1 Chronicles 4:11. Some theologians believe the Chelub mentioned in the verse is actually Caleb, one of twelve spies assigned by Moses to survey the land of Canaan.

According to the verse, the Ethiopian eunuch who was converted to Christianity by Philip the evangelist was a man "of great authority" under Candace, being in charge of her treasury.

For details about the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch see Acts 8:26-40.
18. According to Scripture, who intervened to prevent forty men from fulfilling their plans to kill Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles? (Acts 23:26)

Answer: Claudius Lysias

Claudius Lysias was instrumental in preventing a plot to kill Paul come to fruition, as per Acts 23:11-35. According to Scripture, no less than forty men had planned to ambush Paul and vowed to neither eat nor drink until they had killed him. The ambush was planned to take place when Paul was taken to appear before Felix, the Roman procurator of Iudaea.

Scripture goes on to tell of Paul's sister's son hearing of the ambush plans and making Paul aware of the situation. (No name is given for Paul's sister or for her son.) Paul in turn made the authorities aware of the plot and Claudius Lysias, commander of the Roman garrison in Jerusalem, took action to ensure Paul's safety.

Acts 23:23-24 tells of Claudius Lysias assigning two hundred soldiers, seventy horseman and two hundred spearmen to transport Paul safely to the hands of Felix during the third hour of the night.

Things took a dramatic change when two more false witnesses appeared and accused Jesus of claiming He was "able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days." Scripture states Jesus remained silent. Then in Verse 63, Caiaphas states to Jesus, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!" In Verse 64, Jesus responded to Caiaphas, stating: "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."

At this point, Caiaphas was livid and tore his clothes at Christ's statement. Caiaphas proceeded to claim Jesus was guilty of blasphemy and should be put to death. Everyone else in the room agreed, according to Scripture.

The notes state any Roman citizen had the right to appeal to the emperor himself, if they felt they were not getting justice in a provincial court.

Paul, of course, was charged the the Jewish religious leaders of the day for preaching news about a resurrected Jesus Christ. His teachings, they reasoned, amounted to blasphemy.

22. Out of the four names below starting with the letter 'C', which one was the steward of Herod's household whose wife was a follower of Jesus? (Luke 8:3)

Answer: Chuza

According of Luke 8:3, Chuza was the steward of Herod's household and his wife, Joanna, was a follower of Jesus. In fact, the verse states Joanna, as well as "many others" provided for Jesus from their substance. This is the only mention of Chuza in Scripture so little is known about him.
23. What was the nickname that starts with the letter 'C' Jesus gave Peter, as per John 1:42?

Answer: Cephas

Jesus gave Peter the nickname Cephas which means stone, or rock.

John 1:42, in the NKJV, states: "And he [Andrew] brought him [Peter] to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, 'You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas' (which is translated, A Stone)."

Answer: Chloe

Chloe is the correct answer. However, little is known about her as she is mentioned in passing reference.
