Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1 Samuel 4:19 tells of a woman who was pregnant and near her time of delivery. When she heard the news the Ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. How is the woman identified?

Answer: Eli's daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas

The woman's name isn't given. She is simply identified as Eli's daughter-in-law and the wife of Phinehas. Her death is recorded right after Eli died as a result of learning of the death of his two sons (Hophni and Phinehas) and the capture of the Ark of God by the Philistines. According to Scripture, as soon as Eli, a priest of Israel, heard about the capture of the Ark of God, he fell of his chair and broke his neck.

1 Samuel 4:19-22, in the NIV Bible, has this to say about the death of Eli's daughter-in-law: "His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. As she was dying, the women attending her said, 'Don't despair; you have given birth to a son.' But she did not respond or pay any attention. She named the boy Ichabod, saying, 'The Glory has departed from Israel' -- because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. She said, 'The Glory has departed from Israel, for the Ark of God has been captured'."
2. Ahaziah was a king of Israel, replacing Ahab and reigning for two years. Who was his mother?

Answer: Jezebel

Due to her evil ways, Jezebel has come to symbolize evil women, according to Wikipedia. Jezebel is regarded as a villain in the Old Testament because she played a pivotal role in convincing her husband Ahab to stop worshiping God and to worship Baal. (See 1 Kings 21:25.) She also had a number of prophets killed, as per 1 Kings 18:4.
3. Solomon was the father of many children, due to the fact he had 700 wives and 300 concubines. However, only one of his mates is mentioned by name and she was the mother of Rehoboam. Can you name her?

Answer: Naamah

Naamah is the correct answer but little is known about her as she is mentioned in passing reference. According to 1 Kings 14:21, she was the mother of Rehoboam and she was an Ammonite. The same Scripture verse states Rehoboam was 41 years old when he became king and he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem. Shortly after Rehoboam became king, the northern kingdom broke away.
4. What was the name of the prophet Samuel's mother, as per 1 Samuel 1:2?

Answer: Hannah

Hannah is the correct answer. She was the wife of Elkanah and, like several other women in the Old Testament, she was distraught because she was unable to conceive. According to Scripture, she fervently prayed to the LORD and she was finally able to conceive, giving birth to Samuel. 1 Samuel 1:27-28, in the NIV Bible, quotes Hannah as stating: "I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD."
5. According to 2 Chronicles 22:10, the mother of Ahaziah (not the Ahaziah referred to in Question 2), became a mass murderer when her son died, as she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family of the house of Judah. What was her name?

Answer: Athaliah

The sordid story of Queen Athaliah is found in the 11th chapter of 2 Kings as well as the 22nd and 23rd chapters of 2 Chronicles. She was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel (2 Kings 8:18) and she was the original 'queen of mean'. In fact, she makes Leona Helmsley look like a Girl Guide. When her son Ahaziah died, she was unstoppable in her blood-thirsty mission to have herself instilled as queen. To this end, she killed all Ahaziah's children except Joash, the youngest, as per 2 Kings 11:1-2. (The only reason she didn't kill Joash is the fact he was placed in hiding.) In other words, she killed her own grandchildren to cement her hold on power. She reigned for six years and was killed in an insurrection. 2 Kings 11:20 states "all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was calm" when the news was announced Athaliah had been killed with a sword at the palace.

Incidentally, two different kings were named Ahaziah. The first Ahaziah was the son of Ahab and Jezebel and reigned as king of Israel. The second Ahaziah was the sixth king of Judah. His father was Joram in the NKJV or Jehoram in the NIV.
6. According to Proverbs 31:1, the sayings of King Lemuel were an inspired utterance his mother taught him. What was her name?

Answer: No name is given

No name is given for the king's mother. According to Wikipedia, Lemuel is a Hebrew name, meaning "devoted to God". No one knows for certain who Lemuel was, but one school of thought has it that he was actually Solomon, as many of the tidbits of advice would definitely apply to him. (For example, Lemuel's mother warned her son against giving his strength unto women.) If Lemuel was indeed Solomon, then the mother would be Bathsheba.

But this is only speculation, of course. The correct answer to the question has to be 'no name is given'.
7. According to 1 Kings 22:42, Jehoshaphat was 35 years old when he became king of Judah and he ruled for 25 years. What was his mother's name?

Answer: Azubah

Azubah is the correct answer but little is known about her as she is mentioned only in passing reference. According to 1 Kings 22:42, she was the daughter of Shilhi. Jehoshaphat is largely remembered in the Old Testament as a good king, as he took action to eliminate places of worship of false gods.

This even though he formed an alliance with King Ahab of the northern kingdom who, along with his wife Jezebel, was committed to wiping out the prophets of God.
8. Naomi was the mother of two sons who were married to Orpah and Ruth. What were the names of her sons, as per the NIV Bible? (In the KJV and the NKJV, the name of one of the sons is slightly different.)

Answer: Mahlon and Kilion

Mahlon and Kilion were sons of Naomi and were married to Orpah and Ruth, two Moabite women. (In the KJV and the NKJV, Killion's name is spelled Chilion.) According to Ruth 4:10, Ruth was married to Mahlon. Scripture states the two sons died and Orpah opted to return to her homeland, but Ruth decided to stay by the side of Naomi, who was also a widow.
9. What was the name of the widow from Nain who had her son raised from the dead by Jesus?

Answer: No name is given

The widow is not identified. She is simply known as the widow at Nain. The account of the widow's son being raised from the dead is found in Luke 7:11-17. The account is not found in any other Gospel. What's more, this is the only time Nain is mentioned in either the Old Testament or the New Testament.

The account of the widow's son being raised from the dead is one of my favorite stories in the New Testament. (Feel free to try your hand at another quiz I have posted at FunTrivia about the widow's son being raised from the dead at Nain.)
10. According to Scripture, Mary was a young virgin who gave birth to Jesus. Scripture states Jesus had four brothers -- James, Joses, Simon and Judas, as per Matthew 13:55-56. According to the same verse, how many sisters did Jesus have?

Answer: No exact number is given

While Scripture states Jesus had four brothers, there is no clear indication about how many sisters there were. Matthew 13:55-56, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us?" (In the NIV Bible, Joses is referred to as Joseph.)

It is clear Jesus had at least two sisters as the plural form of 'sister' is used in Scripture. However, the correct answer has to be 'no exact number is given'. No where in Scripture does it provide a name, or any other information, about Jesus' sisters.
