Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What judge of Israel had 30 sons and 30 daughters and had every one of them marry a member of a different tribe?

Answer: Ibzan

Ibzan is the correct answer. He replaced Jephthah and led Israel for seven years. Scripture doesn't say, but he must have had a number of wives. According to Judges 12:8-9, Ibzan had 30 sons and 30 daughters and had every one of them marry outside of his clan. He was born in Bethlehem and buried there as well.
2. Methuselah was the oldest man in the Bible, living for 969 years. According to Genesis 5:21, who was his father?

Answer: Enoch

Enoch was the father of Methuselah, the oldest person in the Bible. Genesis 5:21 states he became the father of Methuselah when he was 65 years old. According to Scripture, Enoch lived to be 365 years old and had other sons and daughters. Apparently he didn't die a natural death as Genesis 5:24 states "...then he was no more, because God took him away." Enoch's name appears in the third chapter of Luke as part of the genealogy of Jesus.
3. Manasseh was the son of Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On. According to Genesis 41:51, the child's father named his first born Manasseh "because God had made him forget all his trouble and all his father's household." What's the father's name?

Answer: Joseph

Joseph is the correct answer. During this time he was serving as second in command in Egypt, surpassed only by the Pharaoh. According to Genesis 41:52, the couple had another son and he was named Ephraim. Joseph picked the name Ephraim "because God had made him fruitful in the land of his suffering."
4. According to Exodus 6:20, this man married his father's sister Jochebed and she bore him Aaron and Moses. What's the man's name?

Answer: Amran

Amran is the correct answer. Amran and Jochebed were also parents of Miriam, as per Numbers 26:59. According to Scripture, Amran lived for 137 years and his father was Kohath. Amran had three brothers -- Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.
5. Jonathan was the best friend of David. This even though his father was attempting to kill David. Who was Jonathan's father?

Answer: Saul

Saul, the first king of Israel, was obsessed with wanting to kill David. Although his reign got off to a fairly good start, before long he became preoccupied with his quest to kill David, and for no logical reason. And this even though David did everything in his power not to retaliate. On top of this, Saul's son Jonathan, was the best of friends with David.

Their friendship begins in 1 Samuel 18.
6. Here's another question involving the name Manasseh. But this is a different person from the one in Question 3. This Manasseh was 12 years old when he became the king of Judah and reigned for 55 years, as per 2 Kings 21:1. According to Scripture, he did evil in the eyes of the LORD and rebuilt altars to other gods that his father had demolished. Who was his father?

Answer: Hezekiah

Manasseh was the opposite of his father, Scripture states. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD and rebuilt the high places his father Hezekiah had demolished, according to Scripture. Manasseh even sacrificed his son as part of his religious beliefs. 2 Kings 21:6, in the NIV Bible, states: "He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced divination, sought omens, and consulted mediums and spiritists.

He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, arousing His anger."
7. The firstborn of Jacob was the father of Hanok, Pallu, Hezron and Karmi. What's his name?

Answer: Reuben

Reuben is the correct answer. Although he was the first born, he lost that right. 1 Chronicles 5:1-3, in the NIV Bible, explains things this way: "The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father's marriage bed, his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel; so he could not be listed in the genealogical record in accordance with his birthright, and though Judah was the strongest of his brothers and a ruler came from him, the rights of the firstborn belonged to Joseph) the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Hanok, Pallu, Hezron and Karmi."

Reuben's mother was Leah. Genesis 29:32, in the NIV Bible, states: "She (Leah) named him Reuben, for she said, 'It is because the LORD has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now'." As explained in previous chapters in Genesis, Jacob was married to Leah and her sister Rachel, but he clearly favored Rachel. And while Rachel was barren for a number of years, Leah was bearing sons.
8. The ninth chapter of 2 Samuel tells of David showing great kindness to Mephibosheth, who was lame in both feet. In fact, David insisted Mephibosheth would always eat at his table as a tribute to the lame man's father. Who was Mephibosheth's dad?

Answer: Jonathan

Jonathan was the father Mephibosheth. Jonathan, of course, was David's best friend, this even though his father, King Saul, devoted much of his life trying to kill David. Even though Jonathan would have been next in line to replace his father as king, he maintained a strong friendship with David.

When Jonathan died, David made sure his lame son was well taken care of and apparently treated him like his own son.
9. According to Mark 15:21, Simon from Cyrene was forced to carry the cross for Jesus to the crucifixion site. The same verse states Simon was the father of two sons. Can you name them?

Answer: Alexander and Rufus

Alexander and Rufus are the names of Simon's two sons. However, no other details are given. According to Wikipedia, Cyrene was a community in northern Africa, near the present day village of Shahhat in Libya. Cyrene is also mentioned in Acts 2:10 with the second chapter telling of the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
10. What is the name of the father who welcomes his son back in the Parable of the Prodigal Son?

Answer: No name is given

No name is given. The Parable of the Prodigal Son, or the Lost Son, appears in only the Gospel of Luke. It's arguably the most popular of all the parables told by Jesus, perhaps rivaled by only the Parable of the Good Samaritan. In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, as well as the Parable of the Good Samaritan, no names are used by Jesus.

Incidentally, the Parable of the Good Samaritan also appears in only the Gospel of Luke.
