Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAT', which one was a member of the Twelve Disciples?

Answer: Matthew

Matthew is the correct answer, of course. Matthew was a tax collector who was also known as Levi. He is credited with writing the Gospel of Matthew, the first book of the New Testament.

What I find fascinating is Matthew is one of only two of the original Twelve Disciples not quoted in the New Testament. The other disciple not quoted is James the Lesser. The other ten disciples are all quoted in the Gospels.
2. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAT', which one, according to Acts 1:26, was selected to replace Judas Iscariot as a member of the Twelve Disciples?

Answer: Matthias

Matthias was selected to replace Judas Iscariot as a member of the Twelve Disciples. Details about his selection appear in Acts 1:15-26. Matthias was selected over Joseph who was known as Barsabas and surnamed Justus. Matthias' name appears in only the first chapter of Acts and no where else in Scripture.
3. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAT', which one, according to 2 Kings 24:17, was King Zedekiah's birth name?

Answer: Mattaniah

Zedekiah was appointed king and had his name changed from Mattaniah, according to 2 Kings 24:17. He was the last king of Judah before the inhabitants were taken into captivity by the Babylonians. Mattaniah/Zedekiah was a brother of Jehoiakim.

It must be pointed out a number of other people in the Old Testament were called Mattaniah. However, they were all minor characters.
4. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAT', which one, according to Luke 3:24 in the NKJV, was the grandfather of Joseph, the husband of Mary?

Answer: Matthat

Matthat was the father of Heli and the grandfather of Joseph, as per Luke 3:24-25. His name appears in the genealogy of Christ. However, little is known about him as he is mentioned in passing reference.

A second man called Matthat appears in the genealogy of Christ, as per Luke 3:29. He was the son of Levi,
5. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAT', which one, according to Luke 3:31, is part of the genealogy of Jesus?

Answer: Mattathah

According to Luke 3:31, Mattathah was the son of Nathan and the grandson of David. His name appears in the genealogy of Christ. However, little is known about him as his name is used in passing reference.

While his name also appears as Mattathah in the NKJV, the KJV and the NIV refer to him as Mattatha.

Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state reasons for variations on some names is the fact some versions use Old Testament spelling for people while other versions use variations which come from the Greek.
6. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAT', which one is mentioned in the Book of Ezra in the Old Testament?

Answer: Mattenai

Mattenai is the correct answer. According to Scripture, two men called Mattenai divorced their Gentile wives after being freed from Babylonian captivity. Ezra 10:18-44 gives details about a large number of other men also divorcing their pagan wives.

Answer: mature

The missing word from 1 Corinthians 14:20 in the NKJV is 'mature'. 1 Corinthians is one of thirteen books Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, is credited with writing. The book was addressed to members of the early church in Greece, a city in Greece.

The verse is part of a passage in which Paul provides instruction on speaking in tongues and the need to have order in church meetings.

Answer: material

The missing word from Romans 15:27 in the NKJV is 'material'. To put the verse in context, here's how verses 25-27 read: "But now I am going to Jerusalem to minister to the saints. For it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem. It pleased them indeed, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister to them in material things."

Paul, the writer of Romans, goes on to state he hopes to visit Rome as well as Spain. Paul was known as the apostle to the Gentiles.
9. Fill in the missing word from 1 Peter 4:16 in the NKJV: "Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this _________." (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'MAT'.)

Answer: matter

The missing word from 1 Peter 4:16 in the NKJV is 'matter'. The verse is part of a passage in which Peter writes about suffering for God's glory. For further details, see 1 Peter 4:16-19.

1 Peter was written by Peter, one of the original Twelve Disciples. According to the salutations of the epistle, the manuscript was addressed to members of the early church in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia and Bithynia.
10. Fill in the missing word from Luke 5:36 in the NKJV: "Then He spoke a parable to them: 'No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not _________ the old." (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'MAT'.)

Answer: match

The missing word in Luke 5:36 is 'match'. The verse is part of a passage in which Jesus told one of His parables. In the parable, Jesus tells His listeners "no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined." He also states after drinking old wine, no one desires new wine. For details about the parable about the old and new wine, see Luke 5:36-39.
