Letters in Common Trivia Questions

1. A well-known king of Israel, famous for slaying Goliath and committing adultery with Bathsheba, had a name that starts and ends with the letter 'D'. What was the king's name?

From Quiz
Names That Begin & End with the Same Letter -- #1

Answer: David

David, of course, is the correct answer. He was the young shepherd boy who slayed Goliath with a slingshot and ascended to become king of Israel. While serving as king, David had an adulterous affair with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah. When Bathsheba became pregnant with his child, David ended up killing Uriah. Details about David and Goliath can be found in 1 Samuel 17 and details about David, Bathsheba and Uriah appear in 2 Samuel 11.

2. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'LAM', which one is the the first polygamist mentioned in the Old Testament? (Genesis 4:19)

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the letters 'LAM'

Answer: Lamech

Going strictly by Scripture, Lamech was the first polygamist in the Bible. Genesis 4:19 tells of Lamech being married to Adah and Zillah. Scripture goes on to state Adah was the mother of Jabal while Zillah was the mother of Tubal-Cain. Chapter 4 of Genesis goes on to tell of Lamech being involved in the second documented murder in Scripture. Lamech's father was Methushael.

3. Out of the four placenames below starting with the letters 'SIN', which one was the name of the mountain on which Moses received the Ten Commandments?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'SIN'

Answer: Sinai

Moses received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, as per Exodus 19 and 20. According to Exodus 19:18, when God descended on Mount Sinai it was "completely in smoke" and "the whole mountain quaked greatly." (In Deuteronomy, Mount Sinai is known as Mount Horeb.) There are differing views among theologians when it comes to the exact location of Mount Sinai. However, the common view is that it is in the Sinai Peninsula, part of present day Egypt. Incidentally, Singapore is a city state in Asia, Siniji is a city in North Korea and Sincelejo is a city in Colombia.

4. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'SHE', which one, according to Genesis 5:32, was a son of Noah?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'SHE'

Answer: Shem

According to Genesis 5:32, Shem was the oldest of Noah's three sons. The two other sons were Ham and Japheth. Shem was the father of Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram, as per Genesis 10:22. Noah and his unnamed wife as well as Shem, Ham and Japheth and their three unnamed wives survived a gigantic flood that engulfed the world by taking refuge in a gigantic ark, according to Scripture.

5. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAR', which one was the mother of Jesus?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'MAR'

Answer: Mary

Mary, of course, is the correct answer. She was the young woman who gave birth to Jesus even though she had not been intimate with a man. Mary was engaged to Joseph at the time she became pregnant and the two became husband and wife. Luke 1:29-33 tells of the angel Gabriel announcing to Mary she would give birth to Jesus, even though she was a virgin. In the verses in the NKJV, Gabriel states: "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."

6. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one, according to Mark 2:14, was the father of Levi/Matthew?

From Quiz All the Answers End with the Letters 'EUS'

Answer: Alphaeus

Alphaeus was the father of Matthew, also known as Levi, as per Mark 2:14. The verse tells of Matthew/Levi sitting at his tax office and when Jesus saw him, He told him to "follow Me." The verse indicates Matthew arose and followed Jesus without any hesitation. Matthew is the writer of the Gospel of Matthew, the first book in the New Testament. Apart from Mark 2:14, there is no further mention of Matthew's father. It must be pointed out there is a second man called Alphaeus in the New Testament, but we'll save the details for a future question in this quiz.

7. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'IAH', which one is linked with Solomon, as per 2 Samuel 12:25?

From Quiz All Answers End with the Letters 'IAH' -- #2

Answer: Jedidiah

Jedidiah was the divinely inspired name for Solomon. 2 Samuel 12:24-25 states God loved Solomon which prompted Nathan the prophet to call him Jedidiah. According to Wikipedia, Jedidiah means 'friend of God'. Although Jedidiah was the second or blessing name given to Solomon, it never stuck and 2 Samuel 12:25 is the only place in the KJV, NKJV and the NIV where the name can be found.

8. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'AHI', which one was a counsellor to David, but then deserted him during a bloody coup attempt and became an adviser to Absalom? (2 Samuel 15:31)

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'AHI'

Answer: Ahithophel

Ahithophel was well known for his wisdom and a being a key counsellor to David. However, Ahithophel was anything but loyal with Scripture telling of him deserting David during a bloody coupe attempt and becoming an adviser to the leader of opposing forces. The leader of the opposing forces was non other than David's son Absalom. Ahithophel's decision to join Absalom's camp would prove to be a crucial blunder. After learning Ahithophel had left him as an adviser, 2 Samuel 15:31 tells of David praying the "LORD would turn Ahithophel's counsel into foolishness". And sure enough, that's what happened. Scripture goes on to tell of Ahithophel's advice being useless for Absalom and the would-be king stopped listening to him. The story ends with Ahithophel putting his house in order and hanging himself, as per 2 Samuel 17:23.

9. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAT', which one was a member of the Twelve Disciples?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'MAT'

Answer: Matthew

Matthew is the correct answer, of course. Matthew was a tax collector who was also known as Levi. He is credited with writing the Gospel of Matthew, the first book of the New Testament. What I find fascinating is Matthew is one of only two of the original Twelve Disciples not quoted in the New Testament. The other disciple not quoted is James the Lesser. The other ten disciples are all quoted in the Gospels.

10. Out of the four place names below starting with the letters 'BET', which one was where Jacob saw angels of God ascending and descending a ladder to heaven?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'BET'

Answer: Bethel

Jacob was at Bethel when he had a dream regarding angels of God ascending and descending a ladder from heaven, as per Genesis 28:10-22. When Jacob arose in the morning, he said: "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!" As a result, he named the location Bethel. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible state Bethel means 'House of God'.

11. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'AHA', which one was a ruthless adversary of Elijah, a prophet of God, as per 1 Kings 18:9?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'AHA'

Answer: Ahab

Ahab was an evil king of Israel, who, along with his wicked wife Jezebel, was vehemently opposed to the prophets of God, most notably Elijah. Ahab and Jezebel were responsible for killing a large number of the prophets, but were unsuccessful in their relentless efforts to remove Elijah from the scene. According to 1 Kings 16:33, Ahab did more to provoke God to anger "than all the kings of Israel who were before him."

12. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'HAM', which one had a diabolical plan to commit mass genocide against all the Jews in Persia?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'HAM'

Answer: Haman

If Haman had his way, all the Jews in the vast Persian empire ruled by King Ahasuerus would have been exterminated. However, Scripture tells of Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai joining forces to thwart Haman from carrying out his diabolical scheme. The story of Esther and Mordecai saving the lives of the Jews in Persia is recounted in the book of Esther. According to Esther 1:1, the Persian empire at the time consisted of one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, stretching from India in the east to Ethiopia in the west.

13. What was the name of the bird God miraculously provided to feed the Israelites while they were travelling from Egypt to Canaan? (Remember all answers start with the letters 'QUA'.)

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the letters 'QUA'

Answer: quail

While travelling from Egypt to Canaan, the Israelites were fed quail and manna, miraculously provided by God. According to Exodus 16, God provided the Israelites with quail in the evening and manna in the morning. Manna and quail are also mentioned in the 11th chapter of Numbers.

14. What's the name of an Old Testament book that contains a collection of witty sayings, many of them written by Solomon? (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'PRO'.)

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'PRO'

Answer: Proverbs

Proverbs is the correct answer. In the NKJV and the NIV, Proverbs consists of thirty-one chapters with Solomon credited with writing the vast majority of content. However, Agur is credited with writing Chapter 30 and Lemuel Chapter 31. In both the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Bible, Proverbs appears immediately after Psalms.

15. Fill in the missing word from Galatians 5:1 in the NKJV: "Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be __________ again with a yoke of bondage." (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'ENT'.)

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'ENT'

Answer: entangled

The missing word is 'entangled'. Galatians was written by Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. The common belief is that the book was addressed to members of the early church at Galatia, a district in present day Turkey. However, according to Wikipedia, a small number of scholars believe 'Galatia' is "an ethnic reference to a Celtic people living in northern Asia Minor". Galatians consists of six chapters. Rather than use the word 'entangled', the NIV states, "do not be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."

16. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ELI', which one was so depressed he called upon God to end his life?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'ELI'

Answer: Elijah

According to 1 Kings 19:4, Elijah was so depressed he prayed to God his life would be ended. The verse in the NKJV states: "It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!" Amazingly, Elijah made the request after his miraculous victory over four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal in a showdown on Mount Carmel. According to Scripture, Jezebel, the wicked wife of King Ahab, was livid following Elijah's victory and wanted the prophet of God dead. As a result, Elijah went into hiding and then, in a fit of despair, calling on God to end his life. Scripture goes on to tell of Elijah surviving his ordeal and Ahab and Jezebel both being killed.

17. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'PHI', which one recruited Nathanael to become a member of the original Twelve Disciples?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'PHI'

Answer: Philip

Philip recruited Nathanael to become a member of the original Twelve Disciples, as per John 1:45. According to the previous verse, Philip had just become one of the Twelve Disciples. Similar to Peter and Andrew, Philip was from Bethsaida, a fishing community on the northeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee. I find it fascinating that whenever a list of the names of Twelve Disciples appears in Scripture, Philip's name is always fifth. (See Matthew 10:2-4; Mark 3:16-19, Luke 5:14-16 and Acts 1:13.)

18. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'ABI', which one was a wife of David?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'ABI'

Answer: Abigail

Abigail is the correct answer. According to Scripture, she was "intelligent and beautiful" and was originally married to Nabal, described as "surly and mean". After Nabal was struck dead in a case of divine retribution, Abigail became David's wife. For further details, see 1 Samuel 25:2-42.

19. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'BAR', which one was a member of the Twelve Disciples?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'BAR'

Answer: Bartholomew

Bartholomew, who was also known as Nathanael, is the correct answer. His name appears in Matthew 10:3, Mark 3:18, Luke 6:14 and Acts 1:13. However, in John 1:45 he is referred to as Nathanael. Nathanael is best known for being the first of the Twelve Disciples to refer to Jesus as the Son of God, as per John 1:49.

20. Out of the four choices below, which one was a son of Joseph and Asenath?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the letters 'MAN'

Answer: Manasseh

Manasseh was the son of Joseph and Asenath. At the time, Joseph was the second most powerful man in Egypt, surpassed by only the Pharaoh. According to Genesis 41:51, Joseph called his firstborn son Manasseh, "For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father's house." Joseph and Asenath had a second son -- Ephraim.

21. Who was the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth according to Genesis 5:32?

From Quiz Yes, It's a Bible Quiz Dealing with 'No'

Answer: Noah

The correct answer is 'No'ah. Noah was the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth, as per Genesis 5:32. According to Scripture, the three sons and their wives were taken aboard the ark and survived a massive flood that covered the world. The account of the flood is found in the seventh and eighth chapters of Genesis.

22. The mother of Samuel, a noted judge of Israel, has a name that starts and ends with the same letter and is a palindrome as well. What is the woman's name?

From Quiz Names That Begin & End with the Same Letter -- #2

Answer: Hannah

In addition to being a name that begins and ends with the same letter, Hannah is a palindrome. In other words, it reads the same frontwards and backwards. Hannah was married to Elkanah and for the longest time she was unable to conceive. This, even though Elkanah was also married to Penniniah who was the mother of an unstated number of sons and daughters. 1 Samuel 1:7 tells of Peninnah belittling Hannah for being unable to bear children with Hannah becoming depressed. However, after fervently praying to God, Hannah gave birth to Samuel, who would become a noted judge of Israel. 1 Samuel 2:18 tells of God blessing Hannah with more children after Samuel's birth. In fact, the verse states she bore three sons and two daughters.

23. A second king in the Old Testament with a name that begins and ends with the letter 'H' had fifteen years added to his life after he was seriously ill, as per 2 Kings 20:1. What was the king's name?

From Quiz Names That Begin & End with the Same Letter -- #1

Answer: Hezekiah

2 Kings 20:1-11 tells of Hezekiah, king of Judah, being seriously ill and after poring his heart out to God, having fifteen years added to his life. According to the passage, Hezekiah fervently prayed to God for deliverance after Isaiah told him to "set your house in order, for you shall die, and not live," as per the NKJV. Shortly afterwards, Isaiah received divine instructions to return to Hezekiah with good news that fifteen years would be added to his life.

24. Out of the four titles below starting with the letters 'LAM', which one is the title of a book in the Old Testament?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the letters 'LAM'

Answer: Lamentations

Lamentations, of course, is the correct answer. Jeremiah, a major prophet of God, is credited with writing Lamentations, but some modern day scholars are in disagreement. According to the Website Insight.org, the original name of the book in Hebrew, 'Ekah', can be translated 'Alas!' or 'How?'. In the Protestant Bible, Lamentations appears after Jeremiah and before Ezekiel.

25. Fill in the missing word from 1 Chronicles 16:23 in the NKJV: "_______ to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day." (Remember all the answers start with the letters 'SIN'.)

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'SIN'

Answer: Sing

The missing word from 1 Chronicles 16:23 in the NKJV is 'Sing'. The verse is part of a passage, running from 1 Chronicles 16:7-36, that is known as David's Song of Thanksgiving. Scripture tells of David writing the song after the Ark of God had been captured by the Philistines and then returned to Jerusalem by the Israelites. The first six verses of 1 Chronicles 16 provide details about the Ark of God being placed in the tabernacle with the words to David's song appearing in the next twenty-nine verses.

26. Out of the four placenames below starting with the letters 'SHE', which one, according to 1 Kings 10:1-13, was a country represented by a queen who presented Solomon with a vast array of gifts?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'SHE'

Answer: Sheba

Sheba, of course, is the correct answer. 1 Kings 10:1-13 as well as 2 Chronicles 9:1-12 tells of the queen of Sheba travelling to Jerusalem to present a vast array of precious gifts to Solomon as she had heard about his fame and wisdom. Scholars are divided about the exact location of Sheba but the most common view states it was south of present day Saudi Arabia in territory now known as Yemen. For the record, Sheffield is a city in England, Sherbrooke is a city in Canada and Shaoxing is a city in China.

27. Out of the four names below starting with the letters 'MAR', which one lived in Bethany and was the industrious sister of Mary and Lazarus?

From Quiz All the Answers Start with the Letters 'MAR'

Answer: Martha

Martha was the industrious sister of Mary and Lazarus. While Martha was industrious, Mary is best known for being insightful. The two acquired the reputations as a result of their actions in Luke 10:38-42. The passage tells of Jesus being in the home of the two sisters, with Martha busy preparing things for the guests while Mary sat attentively at Christ's feet listening to Him. Martha became frustrated with what was happening and asked Jesus to request Mary to come and help her. To Martha's surprise, Jesus responded by saying: "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."

28. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'EUS', which one, according to Mark 10:46-47, was a blind man who called Jesus "Son of David"?

From Quiz All the Answers End with the Letters 'EUS'

Answer: Bartimaeus

Bartimaeus was a blind beggar at Jericho who referred to Jesus as "Son of David". Christians believe 'Son of David' is a Messianic title for Jesus. By calling Jesus 'Son of David', Bartimaeus was acknowledging Him as the Messiah. Shortly after his encounter with Jesus, Bartimaeus would be miraculously cured of his blindness. Scripture tells of Bartimaeus following Jesus along the road after he was able to see. For details, see Mark 10:46-52.

29. Out of the four names below ending with the letters 'IAH', which one is the writer of an Old Testament book?

From Quiz All Answers End with the Letters 'IAH' -- #2

Answer: Zechariah

Zechariah is the correct answer. He wrote the book that bears his name and it appears in the Minor Prophet section of the Old Testament. In the Christian Bible, Zechariah is the second last book in the Old Testament and is followed by Malachi. The book of Zechariah consists of fourteen chapters. It must be pointed out a number of other men are called Zechariah in the Old Testament. Some Bible versions refer to the father of John the Baptist as Zechariah. Answer: Ahinoam

Ahinoam is the name of two women in the Old Testament. One was the wife of David and the other the wife of Saul. The Ahinoam who married David was from Jezreel and she bore him a son, Amnon. 1 Samuel 30 tells of Ahinoam and Abigail, another wife of David, being taken captive by the Amalekites. Scripture goes on to tell of David freeing his two wives as well as a number of other people who had been taken captive by the Amalekites. The second woman called Ahinoam, the wife of Saul, is mentioned in 1 Samuel 14:50. She was the daughter of Ahimaaz, another Bible character whose name starts with the letters 'AHI'.
