Names That Begin & End with the Same Letter -- #1 Quiz

I recently completed a FunTrivia quiz by WesleyCrusher about words that begin and end with the same letter, so I thought I would do one with a Biblical theme. The NKJV was used for this quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A well-known king of Israel, famous for slaying Goliath and committing adultery with Bathsheba, had a name that starts and ends with the letter 'D'. What was the king's name?

Answer: David

David, of course, is the correct answer. He was the young shepherd boy who slayed Goliath with a slingshot and ascended to become king of Israel. While serving as king, David had an adulterous affair with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah. When Bathsheba became pregnant with his child, David ended up killing Uriah.

Details about David and Goliath can be found in 1 Samuel 17 and details about David, Bathsheba and Uriah appear in 2 Samuel 11.
2. A second king in the Old Testament with a name that begins and ends with the letter 'H' had fifteen years added to his life after he was seriously ill, as per 2 Kings 20:1. What was the king's name?

Answer: Hezekiah

2 Kings 20:1-11 tells of Hezekiah, king of Judah, being seriously ill and after poring his heart out to God, having fifteen years added to his life. According to the passage, Hezekiah fervently prayed to God for deliverance after Isaiah told him to "set your house in order, for you shall die, and not live," as per the NKJV.

Shortly afterwards, Isaiah received divine instructions to return to Hezekiah with good news that fifteen years would be added to his life.
3. There's a third monarch in the Old Testament who has a name that begins and ends with the same letter. In this case, the recurring letter is 'A'. Who was the monarch who reigned over Judah, as per 1 Kings 15:9?

Answer: Asa

Asa, the son of Abijam, reigned as king of Judah for forty-one years. According to 1 Kings 15:11, Asa did what was right in the eyes of the LORD. Scripture states he removed idols from the land and ensured the God of Israel alone was worshipped. After his death, Asa was replaced as king by Jehoshaphat his son.
4. A prophet who has the same letter at the beginning and end of his name is perhaps best remembered for rebuking King David. If this clue doesn't help you, the prophet was also instrumental in making sure Solomon would become king when David died. What was the prophet's name?

Answer: Nathan

Nathan was the prophet who strongly rebuked David after the noted king had committed adultery with Bathsheba and orchestrated the death of her husband Uriah. Nathan's rebuke of David is recorded in 2 Samuel 12:1-15.

Meanwhile, 1 Kings 1 tells of Nathan doing his part to ensure Solomon would become king, replacing David. Nathan took such action with assistance from Bathsheba when David was in failing health and Adonijah was attempting to become king through a bloodless coup.
5. The father of Joshua also has a name that starts and ends with the same letter. Who was Joshua's father?

Answer: Nun

Joshua's father was Nun. Although the name Nun appears thirty times in the Old Testament using the NKJV, little is known about him. In practically every reference it simply describes Joshua as the son of Nun.

With his name mentioned so many times in Scripture, I suspect Nun's name is one of the most recognized of the dozens and dozens of minor characters in the Old and New Testaments.
6. A New Testament woman who is described in the NKJV as a prophetess had a name that started and ended with the letter 'A'. What was the name of the prophetess?

Answer: Anna

Anna is described as a prophetess, as per Luke 2:36 in the NKJV. Scripture goes on to tell of Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, being elderly and not departing from the temple, but serving God "with fastings and prayers night and day."

Luke 2:38 states Anna spoke about Jesus "to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem."
7. Below are four names with each one starting with a different letter. However, the names have something in common as each one has the same letter at the beginning and end. Out of the four names, which one is mentioned in Philemon?

Answer: Apphia

In addition to being the only one of the four options to appear in Philemon, the name Apphia is the only one to appear in the New Testament. The names Miriam, Hannah and Haggith can be found in only the Old Testament.

There is no way of knowing for certain, but some scholars believe Apphia was the wife of Philemon, and Archippus was their son. The names Philemon, Apphia and Archippus all appear in Philemon 1:1-2, the salutation of the letter written by Paul.
8. One of Paul's esteemed co-workers has a name that starts and ends with the same letter. He is perhaps best known for being imprisoned with Paul and singing hymns at midnight. What is the person's name?

Answer: Silas

Acts 16:16-34 tells of Silas and Paul being severely beaten in Philippi and tossed into jail. Nevertheless, the passage in the NKJV states Silas and Paul were "singing hymns to God" at midnight.

Miraculously, an earthquake struck and all the prisoners were able to make an escape. However, Silas and Paul opted to stay put and used the occasion to convert the jailer to Christianity.
9. One of the original Twelve Disciples has a name that starts and ends with the same letter. What is the disciple's name?

Answer: Philip

Philip, a member of the original Twelve Disciples, has a name that begins and ends with the letter 'P'. What I find fascinating about Philip is that whenever a list of the names of the Twelve Disciples appears in the New Testament, his name is always fifth.

Philip came from Bethsaida, the same community as Peter and Andrew. Bethsaida was a fishing community on the shore of the Sea of Galilee.
10. Our final Bible character with a name that begins and ends with the same letter was the mother of Timothy, a worker in the early church. What was the name of Timothy's mother?

Answer: Eunice

The correct answer is Eunice. Not much is known about Timothy's mother as she is mentioned in passing reference. However, according to 2 Timothy 1:5 in the NKJV, she possessed "genuine faith" and was the daughter of Lois. Eunice was Jewish and her husband was Greek, but he is not named, as per Acts 16:1. They lived in Lystra, part of present day Turkey.
