Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original name of Barnabas, as per the NKJV

Answer: Who is Joses?

Barnabas' real name was Joses, as per Acts 4:36 in the NKJV. (In the NIV, his original name was Joseph.) The apostles, however, gave him the name Barnabas because he was always encouraging others. Scripture states Barnabas means 'Son of Encouragement'. He was a Levite from Cyprus.
2. The New Testament character who is linked with Cyrene

Answer: Who is Simon?

Simon, the man who helped carry Christ's cross, was known as Simon of Cyrene. Details can be found in Matthew 27:32, Mark 15:21 and Luke 23:26. Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus, but not much is known about him, going strictly by Scripture. In Mark, it simply states Simon was "coming out of the country and passing by."

Cyrene was a Greek city in northern Africa in present day Libya.
3. The woman who was the mother of John Mark

Answer: Who is Mary?

Mary was the mother of John Mark, a worker in the early church and the writer of the Gospel of Mark. Acts 12:12 tells of members of the early church meeting at Mary's house and fervently praying for the release of Peer from prison. The verse in the NKJV also states Mary was "the mother of John whose surname was Mark."

According to Colossians 4:10, John Mark was the cousin of Barnabas.
4. The two disciples known as Boanerges, or sons of thunder

Answer: Who are James and John?

James and his brother John were called Boanerges by Jesus, as per Mark 3:17. The verse in the NKJV Bible states Boanerges means 'Sons of Thunder'. The term Boanerges can be found in only this verse in Mark and no where else using the KJV, NKJV or the NIV.

James and John were also known as the sons of Zebedee. Their father Zebedee was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee, as per Matthew 4:21.
5. Two workers in the early church who experienced an earthquake while in prison

Answer: Who are Paul and Silas?

Paul and Silas were both imprisoned in Philippi when a "violent" earthquake shook the prison and "at once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose." The account, from the NKJV, can be found in Acts 16:16-40.

Rather than make an escape to freedom, the passage tells of Paul and Silas staying behind to convert the unnamed jailer, and his household, to Christianity.
6. The elderly man who was left speechless until his son was born

Answer: Who is Zecharias?

Zecharias, known as Zechariah in the NIV, was rendered speechless when the angel Gabriel proclaimed he and his wife Elizabeth would become parents of a boy. Zecharias refused to believe the statement as he and Elizabeth were both elderly and she had been unable to conceive all her life.

Scripture tells of Elizabeth giving birth to John the Baptist and Zecharias being able to speak once again.

See Luke 1 for details.
7. The man who accepted a bribe of thirty pieces of silver

Answer: Who is Judas Iscariot?

Judas Iscariot, one of the original Twelve Disciples, was given thirty pieces of silver to betray Jesus. The betrayal took place in the Garden of Gethsemane and a short time later Christ was crucified, only to rise from the dead on the third day.

Matthew 27:3-5 tells of Judas being filled with remorse after the betrayal and hanging himself.
8. The number of disciples who had breakfast on the shore of the Sea of Galilee with the resurrected Christ

Answer: What is 7?

Seven members of the Original Twelve disciples had breakfast on the shore of the Sea Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberias, with the resurrected Christ. Five of the seven disciples are named in John 21:1-2. The verses in the NKJV state: "After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together."

The passage goes on to tell of Christ and the seven disciples dining on freshly caught fish.
9. Using the KJV, a New Testament book with twenty-two chapters

Answer: What is Revelation?

Revelation, the final book in the Christian Bible, consists of twenty-two chapters, using versions such as the KJV, NKJV and NIV. Tradition holds Revelation was written by John, one of the original Twelve Disciples. For the record, Hebrews consists of thirteen chapters while Philemon and 3 John both consist of one chapter.
10. Using the KJV, the Gospel with the least number of chapters

Answer: What is Mark?

Mark consists of sixteen chapters, making it the shortest Gospel. Using versions such as the KJV, NKJV and NIV, Matthew is the longest Gospel with twenty-eight chapters. Luke has twenty-four chapters and John has twenty-one.
