Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the second king of Israel, as recognized by Saul's army?

Answer: Ish-Bosheth

After King Saul's death, Abner, the commander of Saul's army, made Saul's son Ish-Bosheth king over all Israel and he reigned for two years. David was king after Ish-Bosheth, and Rehoboam, son of Solomon, was king after Solomon. The story is told in 2 Samuel 2:8-10.

2. A Jewish man named Aquila, and his wife, Priscilla, once worked with Paul making tents after they had been expelled from Rome, Italy. Which Roman emperor had put forth a demand for all the Jews to leave Rome, according to Acts 18:1-3?

Answer: Claudius

In Acts 18:1-3, we find the couple, who were tent-makers by trade, working alongside Paul. Interestingly, Paul lived with them for a while and helped them make tents, although he had previously been a well-schooled lawyer under the tutelage of Gamaliel while he had been a member of the Jewish Sanhedrin before his conversion to Christ.

It may seem that Paul took several steps downward on the ladder of success, but that can be taken as a matter of perception, based on natural appearances and not those of a spiritual nature.

Another note of interest, that may be disconcerting to some pastors, priests, elders and other members of the clergy:

Paul did NOT rely on the churches for his financial support or even a salary. In fact, he performed manual labor in order to AVOID being an unnecessary burden on the churches that he was ministering to.
(The preceding statement may make me very unpopular with some of my fellow Baptists. Oh well...)

3. According to Luke 24:50-51, in which community was Jesus when he ascended into Heaven?

Answer: Bethany

The correct answer is Bethany. The NIV describes the ascension this way: "When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God."

4. In the book of Revelation, The New American Bible, what happened immediately after the Lamb opened the seventh seal?

Answer: Silence

"When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour." (Revelation 8:1) This is an interesting contrast to the first six seals. The opening of those seals brought forth the Four Riders Of The Apocalypse, martyrs crying out, and a terrible earthquake.

5. In Romans we read "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news," but in what Old Testament book of the NIV Bible can this expression also be found?

Answer: Isaiah

"How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, 'Your God reigns!'" -- Isaiah 52:7

6. In what city were "Christians" first called by that name?

Answer: Antioch

When the term was first coined in the city of Antioch, (Acts 11:26 KJV) there is no reason to believe that these witty and wicked people were being the least bit complimentary with the name. In fact, while they used it in reference to the disciples, whom they derided as being like Christ, they may have intended it as a slur; not as a badge of honor. (Read the 19th - 30th verses in order to perhaps better understand the persecutions that these early Jewish believers suffered.)

Later, when Paul witnessed to King Agrippa in Acts chapter 26, the word had become more closely associated with the group of people to whom it was applied.
King Agrippa responded to Paul's personal appeal to him in the 28th verse, in chapter 26. "...Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian." (KJV)

7. "Let a gallows be made, fifty cubits high..." Which man's wife suggested this be used as the method of elimination, for his personal antagonist?

Answer: Haman

Esther 5:9-14 tells how Haman revels in everything good in his life and how it becomes "nothing" when he sees Mordecai the Jew.

Here's Esther 5:14 as it reads in the New King James Version:
"Then his wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, 'Let a gallows be made, fifty cubits high, and in the morning suggest to the king that Mordecai be hanged on it; then go merrily with the king to the banquet.' And the thing pleased Haman; so he had the gallows made."

Read the Book of Esther, to learn what happened leading up to this portion of the story and also the final use of Haman's gallows.

8. What was the name of the Canaanite army commander whom Deborah prophesied would be handed over to a woman?

Answer: Sisera

Sisera was the army commander of Jabin, king of Canaan, and together they had been cruelly oppressing the Israelites for 20 years. As army commander, Sisera (whose name means "battle array") was a very powerful man with 900 iron chariots at his disposal. He was definitely not someone that one would choose to pick a fight with!

However he did meet his end at the hands of a woman named Jael. To cut a long story short she drove a tent peg through his skull while he was sleeping! Sisera, not surprisingly, did not survive! And so it was that the great army commander was handed over to a woman, just as Deborah had prophesied. You can read the full story in Judges chapters 4 and 5.

Abner was king Saul's army commander and Goliath is well known as the giant Philistine killed by David while he was still a shepherd boy.

9. Before the high priest Annas, Jesus is questioned about his teachings. Jesus responds by saying that he teaches in public and that it will be better for them to ask the people who heard him teach, rather than he himself. At this point, one of the temple guards, unhappy with that answer, strikes Jesus in the face. How does Jesus react to being hit?

Answer: Christ asks him why, without evidence, he hit him.

"At this reply, one of the guards who was standing nearby gave Jesus a sharp blow to the face. 'Is that the way to answer the high priest?' he said. Jesus replied, 'If I said anything wrong produce the evidence, but if I spoke the truth why hit me?'" (John 18:22-23, New American Bible)

10. Scripture tells of Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, climbing a sycamore tree to get a better look at Jesus in Luke 19: 1-9. In what community did Zacchaeus serve as chief tax collector?

Answer: Jericho

The correct answer is Jericho. Tax collectors were despised by the Jewish citizens because they were seen as traitors working for the Romans. What's more, it was the custom of tax collectors to overcharge the general population and keep proceeds for themselves. Because Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector he would have immense wealth, as per Luke 19: 2, which describes him as "wealthy."
