Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did Jesus give to the 12 disciples when he sent them out to preach?

Answer: Authority over all devils and diseases

Luke 9:1-3 says, "Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. And He said unto them, 'Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece.'"

2. Paul wrote, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." To whom was Paul writing?

Answer: Timothy

2 Timothy 4:7 says, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Paul was in prison again and was aware that his time of execution was near. He wrote words of encouragement and strength to his young protegé, Timothy.

3. The angel of the Lord came to Manoah and his wife to announce they would have a child. What was the name of this messenger of God?

Answer: It is a secret

In Judges Chapter 13, God took a barren woman and gave her a child who became Samson. When the couple wanted to show the visitor who brought them the wonderful news hospitality and honor, the angel instructed them to make the offering up to the Lord. In 13:17, Manoah asked the angel his name, thinking him to be a prophet and not an angel. Judges 13:18 says, "And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Why asketh thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?"

4. Of whom was King David speaking when he said, "Do you not realize that a prince and a great man has fallen in Israel today?"

Answer: Abner

2 Samuel 3:30 says, "Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon."

David and all of the people of Israel mourned for Abner, for he had died as an innocent man. David put on sackcloth and refused to eat, so everyone knew that King David had no part in Abner's murder. The full account of Abner's death and David's mourning is found in 2 Samuel 3:22-39.

5. Which of the following are the only angels mentioned by name in the Protestant Bible?

Answer: Gabriel and Michael

The angel Gabriel is best known for being the one sent by God to announce to the Virgin Mary that she was to be the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. (Luke 1:26-38)

Six months prior, while Zechariah was carrying out his priestly duties in the temple, Gabriel appeared to him. Gabriel told Zechariah that his barren, aging wife Elizabeth would give birth to a son, whom they would name John. John would later become known as "John the Baptist" and would prepare the way for Jesus. The annunciation of his birth can be found in Luke 1:5-25.

Gabriel didn't just appear in the New Testament. It was he whom Daniel saw in the visions which he had in Daniel 8-9. Gabriel explained the meaning of the visions to Daniel.

Daniel was quite a man for involvement with angels! He was also spoken to by an un-named angel in Daniel 10-12. This angel explained that he had been on his way to talk to Daniel but had been detained by the "prince of the Persian kingdom" (taken to mean a demon). It was Michael (whom we know as an archangel, Jude verse 9) who came to help the angel in this battle and freed him to continue his journey to reach Daniel. The angel describes Michael in Daniel 12:1 as "the great prince who protects your people". Michael is also mentioned in Revelation 12:7 as fighting against the devil and his angels.

Uriel and Raphael are both mentioned in the Apocrypha, which are not part of the Protestant Bible. Uriel appears in the second book of Esdras and Raphael in the book of Tobit.

6. Who compared the lilies of the field to Solomon?

Answer: Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount

This is a beautiful passage encouraging us not to worry about the peripheral things, because God will take care of people just as he does all of nature: "And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." Matthew 6:28-29

7. In the book of Jeremiah, God cursed what king of Judah?

Answer: Jehoiachin

He is a rather fascinating character. He is left out of Matthew's genealogy of Jesus and removes the kingly line of David from the possibility of producing the Messiah. "Thus says the LORD: Record this man as childless, a man who shall not succeed in his days; for none of his offspring shall succeed in sitting on the throne of David, and ruling again in Judah." Jeremiah 22:30

8. Who brought the men out of the town to meet Jesus at the well?

Answer: Samaritan woman

John 4 tells the story of the Samaritan woman at the well and her interaction with Jesus. Jesus explains the difference between the water in the well and the water of life that He offers.

John 4:28-30 says, "The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men. 'Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?'"

9. Which Bible Queen was asked, "And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?"

Answer: Queen Esther

The quote is from the book of Esther (Chapter 4 verse 14) which is the wonderful account of how God used an orphan girl as part of His plan to free a whole nation.

10. Which prophet kept both sheep and sycamore-fig trees?

Answer: Amos

When Amaziah the priest in Israel told Amos to go back home to Judah and prophesy there, Amos protested that he never wanted to be a prophet. He was "just a shepherd, and I take care of sycamore-fig trees. But the LORD called me away from my flock and told me, 'Go and prophesy to my people in Israel'" (Amos 7:14). The sycamore-fig tree (Ficus sycomorus) is a different species from the more usual fig tree (Ficus carica).
