Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "... When you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet... as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men."

Answer: Matthew 6:2

The verse is from Matthew 6:2 and quotes Jesus. The statement was made by Jesus during His famous Sermon on the Mount. For details about the Sermon on the Mount, See Matthew 5, 6 and 7.

For the record, Matthew 6:2 reads this way in its entirety in the NKJV: "Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward."

The verse is presented in an edited version due to space limitations with the format for match quizzes.
2. "And Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.'"

Answer: John 6:35

The verse is from John 6:35 and is one of the seven so-called 'I am Statements' made by Christ. Jesus made the statement shortly after He fed the multitude with five loaves of bread and two small fish. According to John 6:9, the pittance of food was provided by an unnamed boy.

All the 'I am Statements' of Christ appear in the Gospel of John.
3. "A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead."

Answer: Luke 10:30

The verse is from Luke 10:30 and is part of a passage reporting on Jesus telling the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The parable is found in only the Gospel of Luke.

In the parable, a man who was travelling to Jerusalem to Jericho was severely beaten, robbed and left for dead. Amazingly, a priest and a Levite passed by and offered no assistance. However, things changed dramatically when a Samaritan stopped and provided immense assistance to the beaten man, even paying for accommodation for him in an inn. This even though Samaritans were despised by Jews in Biblical times.
4. "And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a girl named Rhoda came to answer."

Answer: Acts 12:13

Acts 12:13 is the correct answer. The verse is part of a passage telling of Peter miraculously escaping from prison but encountering difficulty when he tried to enter the home of Mary, the mother of John Mark.

According to Scripture, Rhoda, a young servant girl went to the door when she heard a knock and upon learning it was Peter, she was so excited she ran back inside to tell the people who was at the door. However, when Rhoda told the people Peter was at the door they dismissed her report. This even though Scripture states the people in Mary's house had come together to pray for Peter's release!

A few moments later, the door was opened and a relieved Peter was granted entry.

The account of Peter and Rhoda is found in only the Book of Acts.
5. "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek."

Answer: Romans 1:16

The verse is from Romans 1:16. The verse is part of a passage in which Paul, the writer of Romans, states the just live by faith. Romans 1:16 is a verse often given to new Christians to memorize. In Verses 18 to 32, Paul goes on to tell of God's wrath destined to be unleashed against the unrighteous.

The Book of Romans was addressed to believers in the early church in Rome.
6. "For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe's household, that there are contentions among you."

Answer: 1 Corinthians 1:11

I hope quiz players were able to correctly answer this one with the name 'Chloe' being the key. Chloe is mentioned in only 1 Corinthians 1:11 and nowhere else in the Bible.

The Book of 1 Corinthians is actually a letter written by Paul and addressed to members of the early church in the ancient Greek city of Corinth. In his letter, Paul states unnamed members of Chloe's household had made him aware of quarrels and disputes taking place among church members. Paul goes on to tell the people to be obedient to Christ's teachings and to remember that love must be the prime motive in all their actions.
7. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."

Answer: Philippians 4:6

The famous verse is from Philippians 4:6. The verse is part of a passage in which Paul, the writer of Philippians, urges believers to be united and joyful in prayer. In Verses 4 and 5 in the NKJV, Paul states: "Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand."

The Book of Philippians is actually a letter addressed to members of the early church in the ancient Greek city of Philippi.
8. "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen."

Answer: 2 Peter 3:18

2 Peter 3:18 is the correct answer. The Book of 2 Peter, as well as 1 Peter, was written by Peter, one of the original Twelve Disciples. In the third chapter of 2 Peter, believers are told the Day of the Lord is coming and it is essential to stand steadfast. Verse 18 is the concluding verse in 2 Peter.
9. "And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another."

Answer: 2 John 1:5

The correct answer is 2 John 1:5. The letter of 2 John is addressed to the 'elect lady', described as the 'chosen' lady in the NIV. Interestingly, using the KJV, NKJV and the NIV, the word 'lady' appears only twice in the New Testament and both instances are in 2 John.

Tradition holds John, one of the original Twelve Disciples, is the author of 2 John as well as 1 John and 3 John. He is also credited with writing the Gospel of John and Revelation.
10. "I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement."

Answer: Revelation 17:6

The verse is obviously from Revelation 17:6 as no other book in the New Testament comes close to containing such wording. The verse is part of a passage telling of a scarlet woman along with a scarlet beast. Chapter 18 goes on to tell of the total destruction of Babylon followed by details about the New Jerusalem.

Tradition holds Revelation was written by John, one of the original Twelve Disciples, while in exile on the island of Patmos.
