Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

2. In 2009, Kirill succeeded Alexy II as Patriarch of what?

Answer: Russian Orthodox Church

All answers are real religious organisations but the Russian Orthodox Church is the more mainstream and certainly has the greater longevity, as in 1988 it celebrated its millennial anniversary. The Russian Orthodox cross has three horizontal crossbeams and the lower one is slanted, pointing upwards toward the penitent thief crucified next to Christ, who was bound for heaven and downward toward the impenitent thief crucified on the other side, who was bound for hell.

3. What does the word "psalm" mean?

Answer: a sacred song

Sometimes the Book of Psalms is referred to as the hymnbook of Israel. There are 150 Psalms in the whole book, making this the longest book in the whole Bible.

4. Dante Alighieri's narrative poem "Divina Comedia" ("The Divine Comedy") 1308-1320 is divided into three "cantiche" (parts). In English, these three books refer to Hell, Paradise and what?

Answer: Purgatory

The names of the three parts of the "Divine Comedy" are Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. Purgatory refers to an intermediate state following death which is neither Heaven nor Hell but rather a purification by which one is prepared to enter eternal bliss.

The term comes from the Latin "purgatorium" meaning a cleansing. Not all Christians agree that such a state exists. The Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox churches uphold purgatory; most Protestants and the Anglican (Episcopal) Church does not.

The comparable Jewish concept (again, not accepted by all Jews) is that of Gehenna.

5. Which of the following did NOT convey verbal messages to Biblical characters?

Answer: Loincloth

A serpent spoke to Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1); God spoke to Moses through a burning bush (Exodus 3:4); and an ass spoke to the prophet, Balaam (Numbers 22:28). No record of a talking loincloth, which is good because I don't want to hear anything a loincloth has to say.

6. In the Roman Catholic religion, there are 14 Stations of the Cross, depicting the final hours of the life of Jesus. This pilgrimage of prayer can be done anytime, but usually happens on which day in particular?

Answer: Good Friday

In most Catholic churches, the Stations of the Cross are depicted in sculptures or stained glass on the walls and parishioners go from station to station saying the prayers. A wooden cross is present at every station. The actual Stations of the Cross are along the Via Dolorosa in the Old City of Jerusalem. An annual procession of the devout takes place there.

7. Under which circumstances is it not *necessarily* wrong to kill, according to the Biblical book of Exodus?

Answer: killing a thief who breaks into a home

According to the NIV translation of the Bible, Exodus 22:2 states "If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed". The reasoning behind this is that the killer is trying to protect innocent lives.

It's either killing the intruder in self-defense (whether it's because the thief has a weapon or not) or that the thief is not innocent, since he is not abiding by the law. The other options involve taking an innocent person's life which is not acceptable according to the Bible.

8. What does the Jewish festival of Passover commemorate?

Answer: Exodus from Egypt

Passover or Pesach commemorates the freeing of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. The Lord told the Israelites to mark their doorposts with the blood of a lamb. He would then pass over their homes when He subjected the Egyptians to the tenth plague, killing their firstborn.

9. Which Psalm contains the most verses?

Answer: Psalm 119

Psalm 119 contains 176 verses, arranged into 22 sections containing 8 verses each. The first line of each section begins with the same Hebrew letter and each section uses successive letters in the Hebrew alphabet. Many scholars believe this was a tool to help memorize the Psalm. All but four verses in this Psalm praise the value of God's word.

10. In Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "The Song of Hiawatha", who is Gitche Manito?

Answer: the Great Spirit, Creator

In the Algonquian languages, "manitou" is a word meaning god or spirit or mystery. Gitche Manitou (also spelt Gitchi Manitou, Kitchi Manitou, and several other ways) refers to the Creator God. In Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "The Song of Hiawatha", he uses Gitche Gitche Manito and calls him "the mighty" and "the Master of Life." Early Christian missionaries, committing a perhaps understandable syncretism, used the term "Gitche Manitou" to mean the God the Father of the Christian religion.
