Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Matthew 8:14-15 (KJV) Jesus cured Peter's mother-in-law. What was she suffering from?

Answer: Fever

Peter's mother-in-law was suffering from fever. Jesus walked into the house, looked at her lying down, touched her hand and she was immediately cured.
In Matthew's Gospel we read "And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them." The miracle is also mentioned in Mark 1:29-31 and Luke 4:38-39.
2. Following Jesus' sermon from the mountain-side, Matthew, in 8:1-4 (KJV) describes how Jesus cures a man from disease whose symptoms were visible on his skin. From what kind of disease did the man suffer?

Answer: Leprosy

When Jesus walked down the mountain-side met a man suffering from leprosy. The man declared his faith saying that if Jesus wanted it he would be cured. Jesus touched the man's hand and said "you are now clean". The relevant passage in Matthew's Gospel reads: "When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them".

The miracle is also mentioned in Mark 1:40-45 and Luke 5:12-15.
3. As Jesus was entering Capernaum he was met by a man in power, as described in Matthew 8:5-13 (KJV), and cures the man's servant. What was the position held by this man?

Answer: Centurion

The relevant passage in Matthew's Gospel reads: "And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour".

The miracle is also mentioned in Luke 7:1-10.
4. Jesus was teaching in a house in Capernaum when four men, using an unorthodox method, brought a man in front of Him, as described by Matthew in 9:1-8, so that He would cure him. What was the man suffering from?

Answer: Paralysis

While Jesus was giving a sermon in a house, some men brought a paralytic lying on a bed, so that He would cure him. Jesus moved by their faith cured the sick man. The relevant passage in Matthew's Gospel reads:" And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house.

But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men".

The miracle is also described in Mark 2:1-12 and Luke 5:18-26.
5. In Luke 6:6-10 (KJV) Jesus cures a man that had a withered hand. Where was Jesus at that time?

Answer: In the Synagogue

Jesus was teaching in a Synagogue when he noticed a man with a withered hand. Knowing that the Scribes and Pharisees would object if he cured a man on the Sabbath, He asked whether it was illegal to perform something good on the Sabbath and duly cured the man.

The relevant passage in Luke's Gospel reads: "And it came to pass also on another Sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.

But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other". Matthew 12:9-14 and Mark 3:1-6 describe the miracle as well.
6. According to Luke 7:11-17 (KJV) what miracle did Jesus perform outside the town of Nain?

Answer: Raised a dead youth

As Jesus was approaching the town of Nain, he met a funeral procession, taking a youth for burial. Jesus took pity on the youth's mother, because she was a widow and he was her only son, and raised the boy from the dead. As Luke relates the incident: "And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judea, and throughout all the region round about".
7. While Jesus was in the Gadarenes area Mark 5:1-13 (KJV) describes another miracle. What was the problem with the man that came out of the tombs to meet Jesus?

Answer: Demon-possessed

The man was possessed by Demonic spirits and was roaming the country side, living in tombs and not even chains could restrain him. The relevant passage in Mark reads: "And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea".

The miracle is also described in Matthew 8:28-32 and Luke 8:26-33.
8. While Jesus was walking towards his next destination, he was stopped by a synagogue leader who was pleading for the life of his 12-year-old daughter who was critically ill. According to Mark 5:22-23 what was the name of this man?

Answer: Jairus

Jairus, a leader of the synagogue, approached Jesus begging for the life of his little daughter who was gravely ill. Meanwhile news came from his house saying that his daughter was dead. In Mark's Gospel we read: "And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live". Jesus raised the young girl from the dead. Luke in 8:41 also names then man as Jairus but Matthew in 9:18 doesn't mention the man's name but says that "there came a certain ruler".
9. John 9:1-41 (KJV) describes the miraculous cure of a man that was born blind. Jesus spat on the ground made clay and smeared it on the eyes of the man telling him to go and wash in which pool?

Answer: Siloam

The blind man went to the pool washed his face and gained his sight. This miracle occurred, yet again, on the Sabbath and as a result the man was excommunicated, after declaring that the man who cured him must have been holy. The name Siloam means to send out or to let go. John in 9:7 writes: "And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing".

This miracle is only described in the Gospel of John. Bethesda is another pool mentioned in the Bible; Bethsaida was the town of many of the Apostles and Bethany is the town where Lazarus lived.
10. As Matthew describes in 21:18-20 (KJV) Jesus, on his return to the city, felt hungry and looked on a tree for fruit. What was the tree that was told by Jesus "not to bear fruit ever again"?

Answer: Fig

Jesus was returning to the city when he felt hungry. He saw a fig tree, but all He could find were leaves. He cursed the tree and that died away immediately. The fig tree is deciduous and normally fruit and leaves appear together. We read in Matthew : "Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered. And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away".
