Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All seven churches were in the region of Asia Minor. In what modern-day country is this region?

Answer: Turkey

The answer to this is obviously not in the Bible, but can be easily found on several websites. For example, the Wikipedia article on the seven churches in Asia has a map.
2. Paul wrote one of his New Testament letters to one of the churches mentioned in these chapters. Which one?

Answer: Ephesus

See the New Testament book Ephesians. There is a reference in Colossians 4:16 to a letter from Paul to the church at Laodicea, but as far as we know, no copy of the letter exists and it certainly doesn't appear in the New Testament.
3. To whom is each letter addressed?

Answer: the angel of the church

Many people believe that each person is allocated a personal (guardian) angel. From these passages, it seems that the churches had angels with special responsibility for them.
4. At the end of each letter, a promise is made to the one who does what?

Answer: overcomes

See Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 26 and 3:5, 12, 21. Chapter 2:26 does add the words 'and does my will to the end', but this is not one of the other options listed above.
5. 'He who has an ___, let him ___ what the Spirit says to the churches'. Write the two words that complete this New International Version quotation, in order and with a space between them.

Answer: ear hear

See Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29 and 3:4, 13, 22. Of course, everyone has ears, but not everyone in the church would be willing to listen to what the Spirit was saying.
6. Only two of the seven churches receive praise without any criticism. Which two are they?

Answer: Philadelphia and Smyrna

See Revelation 2:8-11 and 3:7-13. It seems that little over 50 years after Jesus' crucifixion, some of the churches were already descending into error and heresy.
7. In which church are those who overcome promised 'a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it'?

Answer: Pergamum

Revelation 2:17. It is not certain what this means, but some people believe that God will give us a new name when we reach Heaven, perhaps a name that reflects what (or who) we have been on earth.
8. The Christians of which church are praised because they have kept God's word and not denied his name, although they have little strength?

Answer: Philadelphia

Revelation 3:8. I see this as an encouragement to Christians to keep trusting God, even when things are tough, because he sees and understands our hearts.
9. Perhaps the best known verse in these two chapters is Revelation 3:20, which reads, 'Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.' To which of the seven churches is this written?

Answer: Laodicea

Today this verse is often used in evangelism, to encourage non-Christians to put their faith in Jesus and invite him into their lives. However, it is interesting to note that the verse was originally written to people who had already put their trust in him.
10. How many of the seven cities mentioned in Revelation 2-3 still have a significant Christian population today?

Answer: none

According to Wikipedia in its "Seven churches of Asia" article, none of these cities have significant Christian populations today, because they were emptied under the agreements associated with the Treaty of Lausanne (1923), which was instrumental in the international recognition of the Republic of Turkey.

A friend of mine worked in Turkey as an English teacher for many years. She has shown me postcards of archaeological excavations of the ruins of the seven cities dating from the time when John was writing.
