The headquarters are located in Salem, Massachusetts and they share a building with the Salem Art Gallery. The building they are in is a former Victorian funeral home. The organization was founded by Lucien Greaves and Malcolm Jarry who met in 2012 and co-founded the group which became active in early 2013. The Satanic Temple achieved tax exempt status given to churches in 2019.

They also celebrate Hexxannacht (also known as Walpurgis Night) on April 30, which recognizes and remembers people who are victims of superstition.

The other three main holidays are Halloween on October 31, Sol Invictus on December 25 and Unveiling Day on July 25.

The state capitols of Arkansas and Oklahoma both displayed monuments of the Ten Commandments on their grounds. In response to this, the Satanic Temple crowdfunded and raised money to have a large bronze statue of Baphomet created. Baphomet is a deity of a goat-headed figure that is used in occult imagery.

The statue of Baphomet was to be displayed alongside the Ten Commandments monuments. The statue is over eight feet tall (almost three meters tall), and depicts Baphomet sitting on a throne with a pentagram displayed behind his head and two children looking up at him and smiling.

The statue was met with protests by religious organizations due to its controversial nature. In Oklahoma, the Ten Commandments monument was ordered to be removed and when that happened, the Satanic Temple withdrew its request to display their statue.

In Arkansas, the group was given the legal right to challenge the Ten Commandments monument.

Membership in the Satanic Temple is free. Interested individuals sign up on a website. There is a fee of $25 US dollars if a person wants a membership card. Sometimes members are asked to leave or are not renewed depending on how they are conducting themselves and representing the Temple.
