11 Wins On the Trot Trivia Quiz

This quiz is devoted to the Roosters 11 game winning streak of 2002-2003. It's not as much as the record of 19 by the Roosters in 1975 - but as it led to a premiership title, it's pretty important!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Win #1: The first win in this sequence was against Brisbane, in Brisbane, in a Round 22 Friday night blockbuster. Which Rooster wore white boots in this match (he was also man-of-the-match, and it was 'redemption' for his Origin II shocker at ANZ Stadium)?

Answer: Justin Hodges

He scored a try in the 28-18 win. The white boots were a pair of Bryan Fletcher's that Fletch didn't want. Unfortunately, Shannon Hegarty broke his jaw in this match after a head clash with Michael DeVere.
2. Win #2: In Round 23 the Roosters broke an 11-year winning drought down in the nation's capital, Canberra. Who scored the most points in this match against the Raiders?

Answer: Craig Fitzgibbon

Fitzy normally scores the most for the Roosters, as he is the goal kicker. He scored a try and kicked three goals (14 points) in the 38-12 win.
3. Win #3: Round 24 saw the Roosters face the New Zealand Warriors in Sydney. What was the score of this one-sided affair?

Answer: 44-0

A very comfortable win in slightly rainy conditions. 8 tries were scored by the Tricolours, Todd Byrne scoring a double.
4. Win #4: Up against the St George Illawarra Dragons, the Roosters managed to keep the Dragons scoreless in the first half. Who scored a double for the Roosters?

Answer: Anthony Minichiello

The Roosters were up 20-0 at half time. They went on to win 26-10. This kept them at fifth on the points table (remembering that the Bulldogs had 37 competition points deducted for their salary cap breach).
5. Win #5: In the final round of the season, the Roosters were up against the Sharks, at Toyota Park. The two teams would go on to meet each other the next week in the first week of finals, but by winning this match, what did the Roosters achieve?

Answer: All of these

Winger Brett Mullins scored a hat-trick in this 30-18 win. The Sharks ended up finishing fifth, 1 competition point behind the 'Bondi Boys'.
6. Win #6: Week 1 of the Finals Series saw the next match versus the Sharks. Was the winning margin the same as the week before's winning margin?

Answer: Yes

This match was 32-20, both won by 12 points. In this match, Minichiello scored a double for the Roosters.
7. Win #7: In Week 2 of the Finals Series, the Roosters played the Newcastle Knights - the team they beat in 2000 to progress to the Grand Final. How many Roosters scored two or more tries in this match?

Answer: 2

Both Todd Byrne and Anthony Minichiello scored two tries in the 38-12 win at Aussie Stadium.
8. Win #8: The Roosters were down 12-8 at halftime in the First Preliminary Final against the Broncos. What was the full-time score?

Answer: 16-12

The penalty count in this game was 8-2 for the Roosters (Bill Harrigan was the referee). Minichiello and Mullins both scored a try, and Craig Fitzgibbon kicked 4 from 4 to help the Roosters to their second grand final in 3 years.
9. Win #9: The Telstra Premiership Grand Final. The Roosters won their first premiership since what year?

Answer: 1975

They had been in the Grand Final in 1980 (losing 18-4 to Canterbury) and in 2000 (losing 14-6 against Brisbane). The score in this match was 30-8, and Craig Fitzgibbon won the Clive Churchill medal. Hegarty, Wing, Fitzgibbon, Flannery, and Fletcher all scored tries in this career highlight.

The Roosters beat the Warriors 30-8. Wing and Fitzgibbon were rewarded with Australian team spots. Well done, boys!
10. Win #10: The opening match of the Roosters' 2003 campaign was a Friday night blockbuster against the Parramatta Eels. Who scored the first try of the night?

Answer: Nathan Cayless

N. Cayless scored first for the Eels, with brother J. Cayless scoring a couple of minutes later. This set a record of the first time two brothers scored the first two tries of the season for opposing teams. The Roosters went on to win this match 32-14.
11. Win #11: This was a Friday 'Knight' blockbuster. The Roosters played the Knights up in Newcastle and won 14-10. What scoring plays made up these scores?

Answer: 2 tries and 3 goals for the Roosters, 1 try and 3 goals for the Knights

Henderson and Hodges both scored tries for the Roosters. Henderson's was in the first set of six of the match.
12. The winning streak came to an end against which team in Round 3 of 2003?

Answer: Penrith

For the years after the emergence of the NRL competition in 1998, Penrith Panthers for some reason have been the Roosters' bogey team. I suppose it's the traditional 'Bondi boys vs. the Westies', but including this match, Penrith won 6 of the 9 games played since 1998. They also lost to Souths in the Sevens tournament.
13. Unofficial Win: In between Win #9 and Win #10 came an off-season World Club Challenge win on Valentine's Day in England. Which British team was this against (remember, they were the English Super League champions of 2002)?

Answer: St Helens

The score in this match was 38-0 (uncannily, this was the score in the NSWRL Grand Final of 1975 when the Roosters beat St George - their last premiership before 2002). This doesn't count because their 11 wins were 11 wins in the NRL/NSWRL/ARL/Super League competition - this match was none of these.
14. Who was the Roosters' top tryscorer for these 11 wins?

Answer: Anthony Minichiello

He scored 10 tries (9 in 2002, 1 in 2003). Mullins scored 8, Hodges had 7, and Byrne had 6. Fitzgibbon was the highest point-scorer of course, scoring 5 tries and 49 goals = 118 points in 11 games.
15. How many different players were used for these 11 wins?

Answer: 28

These were (in order): Luke Phillips, Brett Mullins, Shannon Hegarty, Justin Hodges, Anthony Minichiello, Brad Fittler, Craig Wing, Jason Cayless, Simon Bonetti, Peter Cusack, Luke Ricketson, Craig Fitzgibbon, Chris Flannery, David Kidwell, Chad Robinson, Dallas Hood, Eric Grothe Jr., Todd Byrne, Michael Crocker, Adrian Morley, Albert Talipeau, Bryan Fletcher, Andrew Lomu, Brett Finch, Lelea Paea, Todd Payten, Ryan Cross and Ian Henderson.

Their coach for this time was former Canberra great Ricky Stuart. Thanks for taking my quiz. Go the Roosters!
