Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many groups were there in the Group Stage?

Answer: There was no Group Stage

This was the first (but not last) FIFA World Cup to not have a Group Stage. The whole tournament was a knockout affair.
2. One match in the First Round ended 7-1. Which two teams were involved in that match?

Answer: Italy and USA

On 27th May 1934, all First Round matches were held simultaneously, and the encounter between Italy and USA in Rome ended with an emphatic 7-1 win to the host side. Germany and Belgium was a First Round match and it was held in Florence. It was also high-scoring, producing a scoreline of 5-2 to Germany. France was eliminated in Turin in the First Round by Austria (extra-time was required to get the final score of 3-2), and therefore never met eventual third-placed Germany. Egypt was eliminated in Naples in the First Round, 4-2 by Hungary. England was not eligible to play due to not being a part of FIFA at the time.
3. Who were the eventual winners in the 1934 World Cup?

Answer: Italy

Italy bombed their way through USA, Spain (albeit after a replay), Austria and eventually Czechoslavakia in the final (after extra-time). Brazil failed to progress past the First Round when they lost 3-1 to Spain in Genoa. Germany lost out 3-1 to Czechoslovakia in the semi-final in Rome, but defeated Austria 3-2 in Naples to get third-place.

The final in Rome ended 2-1 to Italy over Czechoslovakia after extra-time.
4. How many hat-tricks were scored in the tournament?

Answer: 3

Two hat-tricks were scored in the First Round by Italy's Angelo Schiavio against USA and by Germany's Edmund Conen against Belgium. The other was scored in Czechoslavakia's 3-1 semi-final win over Germany by Oldrich Nejedly.
5. Who was the tournament's top scorer and with how many goals?

Answer: Oldrich Nejedly with 5

Oldrich Nejedly bagged a semi-final hat-trick against Germany. One in the quarterfinal 3-2 success over Switzerland in Turin, and one in the First Round 2-1 win over Romania in Trieste. German Edmund Conen scored 4 (his hat-trick against Belgium in the First Round in Florence, and 1 in the third-place match against Austria in Rome).

Italian Angelo Schiavio also scored 4 gaols (his First Round hat-trick against USA, and the goal that won the FIFA World Cup for Italy that year against Czechoslovakia in extra-time). Mustafa Mansour was Egypt's goalkeeper that let in four goals against Hungary to see Egypt exit the World Cup after just 1 game.
6. How many goals did Kick Smit of The Netherlands score?

Answer: 1

Holland only lasted one match as they were eliminated in the First Round in Milan by Switzerland 3-2. Kick Smit was quite a profilic scorer for Holland as he scored 26 goals in 29 appearances for the national team. Smit scored one of Holland's goals in that game.
7. Which goalkeeper was in the journalist and expert category, chosen 1934 FIFA World Cup "Dream Team"?

Answer: Ricardo Zamora

Spain may not have made it past the quarterfinals, but Ricado Zamora only let in 2 goals (although they only actually played 2 games) and performed magnificently. Giampiero Combi was Italy's goalkeeper, Renatio Bizzozero was in the Swiss squad as a goalkeeper, and Frantisek Planicka was Czechoslovakia's inspirational keeper and captain.
8. Which Czechoslovakian player was playing for a French club in the tournament?

Answer: Josef Silny

Josef Silny was playing for AC Nimes. He played in one match in the tournament in the First Round against Romania. Frantisek Planicka was their captain and goalkeeper and played the whole tournament. Oldrich Nejedly obviously was their prolific striker. Antonin Puc scored two goals in the tournament, 1 against Romania in the First Round, and what looked to be the winning goal for Czechoslovakia in the final before Raimundo Orsi equalised and then Angelo Schiavio won the game for Italy.
9. What nationality was the referee for the final (Ivan Eklind)?

Answer: Swedish

There was some speculation as to whether Ivan Eklind's impartiality was swayed by Benito Mussolini in the favour of Italy.
10. There were two African teams in the tournament.

Answer: False

There was only one, Egypt, and they didn't make it very far as they were eliminated in the First Round, 4-2 by Hungary.
