Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In both the 2005 and 2006 finals series, West Coast and Sydney had an amazing rivalry. In the 2005 finals series, West Coast won the qualifying final by 4 points against the Swans, only to be beaten by Sydney by the same margin in the Grand Final. The same thing occurred in 2006, when Sydney beat the Eagles in qualifying final by 1 point, and then lost to them by 1 in the Grand Final! What was the highest score either of these teams kicked in any of those four games?

Answer: 85

It was a fierce, desperate rivalry between the two teams, with some very dour but riveting contests. Remarkably, in the 2006 finals, the scoreline was the same, with both games finishing 85-84, and just to add to that, West Coast also beat Sydney by 1 point in Round 1 of 2007!
2. In, Round 16, 2001, Essendon made history when they made a huge comeback against North Melbourne (the Kangaroos) to end up winning 171-159 in an amazing contest. What was the biggest margin that the Bombers trailed by in this game?

Answer: 69

At the 10-minute mark of the second quarter, Essendon trailed by 69 points before storming back and narrowing the margin to 21 by half-time. Matthew Lloyd kicked 9 goals and the Kangas were powerless to stop the Bombers, who kicked 25 goals after quarter-time.
3. During the Brisbane Lions' golden era of premierships from 2001-2003, they had by far the best midfield in the competition, along with an ultra-reliable ruckman in Clark Keating. Which of these star midfielders was not left-footed?

Answer: Nigel Lappin

All of the Brisbane stars were good kicks, and the deadly left-footed brigade in Black, Akermanis and Hart only added to the Lions' many assets. Lappin was a stalwart for the Lions for fourteen seasons, from 1994-2008.
4. Ian Perrie was a very serviceable player for the Adelaide Crows from 1998-2007, playing 115 games and kicking 133 goals. In what country was he born?

Answer: Zimbabwe

Perrie was the first Zimbabwean player to play AFL football, and he was a very capable key forward for the Crows, often letting himself down with inaccurate kicking for goal. He was delisted after 2007, and went to play in the SANFL with Sturt.
5. In Round 1, 2007, Collingwood beat North Melbourne by 3 points, 12.10.82 to 10.19.79. This game is famous for North Melbourne's Shannon Grant missing an absolute sitter from the goal square, that would have given North the win deep into the last quarter. What Pies player gave away the 50 metre penalty that should've gifted a goal to Grant, and cost Collingwood the game?

Answer: Heath Shaw

The result of the game was very controversial, as Grant had marked the ball inside 50, which meant he should've been brought to the goal line to take his kick, not to the top of the goal square. The reasons why Grant missed are unknown, but one thing was certain: Grant had an everlasting first-class ticket to the Hall Of Shame.
6. Finals crowds weren't exactly up during the 2000s, as so many interstate teams were dominating. What year had the only finals series during the deacde to have over 40,000 people at each final, with its lowest total a crowd of 42,208?

Answer: 2006

The 2006 finals series didn't attract great numbers of people, with two crowds of both 42,000 and 43,000, but it had the most consistent crowds throughout the decade. The lowest crowd in a final during the 2000s was a paltry 19,127 between Sydney and North Melbourne in 2007.
7. Adem Yze was the first player of Albanian descent to play AFL/VFL football.

Answer: False

Contrary to popular belief, another Albanian player had played before Yze. The first player of Albanian descent was John Ibrahim, who played 85 games for 50 goals for North Melbourne between 1962 and 1968.
8. The 2000s weren't a happy time for Carlton, despite having one of the best forwards in the game in Brendan Fevola. One of their darkest days came in Round 8 of 2006, when the Blues lost to St Kilda by 92 points, 4.10.34, to 18.18.126. In this game, Fevola kicked all four of Carlton's goals. How many behinds did Fev kick in addition to his four goals?

Answer: 5

Carlton obviously had limited scoring options, as Fevola also kicked half his team's behinds. Only one other Blues player scored, and that was Simon Wiggins, who scored two behinds. Three behinds for the the Blues were rushed. Up the other end, Nick Riewoldt for St Kilda was having no problems tearing the Blues apart. He finished with 9.3.
9. Who kicked the ball inside West Coast's forward 50 late in the 2005 Grand Final, which was the kick that Leo Barry famously marked?

Answer: Dean Cox

Cox marked Barry's kick-in after the Eagles scored a behind, and hurriedly kicked it back in on his left foot, but much to the chagrin of Eagles supporters, Barry soared for a match-saving mark, and the siren went seconds later, giving Sydney their first premiership for 72 years.
10. Hawthorn's Lance 'Buddy' Franklin kicked 113 goals in total during the 2008 season. Who passed the ball to him for his 100th goal, in Round 22 of that season against Carlton?

Answer: Cyril Rioli

The crowd went ballistic when Buddy kicked his 100th for the season, becoming the first player during the 2000s to achieve that feat. This game, which Hawthorn won by 78, 159-81, was also headlined by Carlton's Brendan Fevola. He went agonisingly close to kicking his 100th for the season as well, kicking 7 to finish with 99 goals, but it was Buddy who stole the show, and the Hawks eventually won the premiership against Geelong.
