Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many teams made their Champions League debut in 2009-10?

Answer: 8

As is usual for the Champions League, there was a large number of debutantes. Among these were VFL Wolfsburg of Germany, FC Rubin Kazan from Russia, and AZ from the Netherlands.
2. In this edition of the Champions League, one club failed to score a single goal, the only club not to score during the competition. Which club was this?

Answer: Maccabi Haifa (Israel)

Maccabi Haifa was drawn in Group A alongside Bordeaux, Juventus, and Bayern Munich. The other clubs all managed to score at least once. Interestingly enough, Maccabi Haifa was the only choice that wasn't making its Champions League debut.
3. This past champion failed to escape the group stage, but wasn't eliminated entirely, having dropped into the Europa League. Which club was it?

Answer: Liverpool (England)

Liverpool was one of two past champions to make a group round exit (Juventus being the other). Real Madrid and Porto were each defeated in the second round.
4. This club rolled through the group round, winning five of its matches and drawing once, while not recording a loss. Which club was it?

Answer: Bordeaux (France)

Bordeaux may not have been a favorite to win Group A, but they did record impressive victories against Bayern and Juventus to finish with 16 points, the most of any club in this edition. Arsenal, Barcelona, and Fiorentina each lost once, with Barca's 2-1 loss at Camp Nou being one of the biggest surprises of the competition.
5. Which club made a late comeback by scoring two goals in eight minutes, to salvage a home draw after going down 3-1?

Answer: Manchester United (England)

Manchester United needed goals from Paul Scholes and Antonio Valencia to rescue a point against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford. The draw proved to be significant, because the two points would have catapulted the Russian club to the top of the group had the scoreline remained at 3-1.
6. Who claimed the first hat-trick of the group stage, and which club did he play for?

Answer: Grafite, Wolfsburg

Brazilian striker Grafite opened Group B with a triple against Turkish club Besiktas. Ronaldo scored six goals in the group round, all scored in two-goal bursts. Owen later scored a hat-trick against Grafite's club, Wolfsburg, while Milito scored several crucial goals for Inter (but never three at once).
7. This player finished as the top scorer of the competition. Who was he, and who did he play for?

Answer: Lionel Messi, Barcelona

Messi scored eight goals in the competition, four of which came at home against Arsenal. Drogba scored three times, Chamakh five, and Olic five.
8. The knockout rounds began with a shocker when Lyon defeated Real Madrid at the Stade de Gerland. Who scored the only goal for the French side?

Answer: Jean Makoun

Makoun's goal right after halftime gave Lyon a surprise lead against the nine-time champions, sending them back to Madrid with a one-goal advantage. Lisandro usually scored from the penalty spot, Gomis scored in the group round, while Toulalan's claim to fame was a quick sending-off against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.
9. This young forward had a breakout match for Arsenal in the second round as he put home a hat-trick against Porto in London. Which one was he?

Answer: Nicklas Bendtner

Bendtner scored twice in the first 25 minutes, and then converted a penalty to complete his first professional hat-trick. Van Persie was injured and didn't play in the match, Nasri scored after a superb piece of skill, and Rosicky started the match on the wing but didn't score at all.
10. The second leg of Manchester United's second round tie was significant because of this player's return to Old Trafford. Which famous former Red Devil was it?

Answer: David Beckham

Beckham came on as a substitute for AC Milan, while the Rossoneri were already hopelessly behind at Old Trafford. Ronaldo was nowhere near Manchester as he starred for Real Madrid. Scholes played for Manchester United, and Tevez's Manchester City was not in the competition.
