Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was England's total in the first innings?

Answer: 362

England made 362, their highest first innings total in the Series thanks to 124 from Mark Butcher (who should have been out on 96 given not out to an obvious catch at bat pad), 75 to Nasser Hussain, and 71 from Alec Stewart.
2. Which Australian bowler had the best figures in the first innings?

Answer: Andrew Bichel

Bichel took 3/86, Lee 2/97, MacGill 2/106, Gillespie 1/62, and Steve Waugh picked up 1/2 (Robert Key) off 4 overs.
3. Jason Gillespie made 31 not out in the first innings. Was this his highest test score?

Answer: No

Gillespie's highest test score was 46 at time, made against India at Kolkata in 2000-2001. This was Gillespie's highest against England, beating the 28* he made at Manchester in 1997.
4. Which two Australian batsmen made centuries, in the first innings total of 363?

Answer: Adam Gilchrist and Steve Waugh

Steve Waugh's century came with a four off the final ball on day two. There is a DVD commemorating that innings.
5. How many runs did Michael Vaughan make in the second innings, before being given out LBW to a ball that would have missed leg stump by about 6 inches?

Answer: 183

A magnificent innings which set up the English victory, and sewed up Man of the Series for him (even though England lost 4-1).
6. Which Australian bowler finished the match with the best figures?

Answer: Andrew Bichel

Bichel 5/168, MacGill 5/226, Lee 5/229, Gillespie 2/132, Steve Waugh also took 1/7, and Dmaien Martyn 0/14. Australia's bowling in the second innings lacked penetration, missing McGrath and MacGill struggling somewhat on a normally spin friendly SCG.
7. The first four Australian dismissals were LBW. Which umpire gave these decisions?

Answer: Russel Tiffin

Taufel was the third umpire and Wasim the match referee. Of the decisions made by Tiffin; Justin Langer's dismissal pitched outside leg stump; Matt Hayden was 2.5m from the stumps and the ball hit him above the knee roll; Ricky Ponting was hit fractionally outside off stump (he was close enough to be given out I think); and Andy Bichel was hit just outside leg stump with a ball angling down the leg side (just like Michael Vaughan).

It was a real shame that these decisions possibly tainted the well deserved English victory.
8. Andy Caddick took 7/94 in the second innings. Were these his best figures against 'the old enemy'?

Answer: Yes

His previous best was 5/42 at the Oval in 1997. His best bowling at that point was 7/42 against South Africa in Duran 2001/2002.
9. Who top scored for Australia in the second innings?

Answer: Andrew Bichel

Andy Bichel was promoted to number three, and scored 49 before being controversially given out LBW by umpire Russel Tiffin. Brett Lee scored 46 off 32 balls sharing in a 43 run partnership with Jason Gillespie (who scored 2 during the partnership). Adam Gilchrist scored 37 off 29 balls and Martin Love scored 27.
10. Which of the following years, was the final test of an Ashes Series determine the holder?

Answer: 1985

England were 2-1 in the 1985 series going into the 6th and final Test at Kennington Oval. If Australia won the Test, they would draw the Ashes 2-2 and as previous holders retain the Ashes. As it turned out, England won by an innings and 94 runs and the back of 350 run partnership between Graham Gooch and David Gower. Australia won the Ashes in England in 1989, and have not relinqhished it since (winning all series since 1989).

The closest series was in 1997 in England where the final result was 3-2 (Australia had retained the Ashes in the fifth test by taking a 3-1 lead in the series.
