Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What state is Augusta National in?

Answer: Georgia

In the early 1930s, Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts met and proposed to build a golf course near Augusta, Georgia. He hoped that the property had many mounds and hills, and a creek to serve as a natural water hazard.
2. What was the former name of the property that is now Augusta National?

Answer: Fruitland Nurseries

This was once an Indigo Plantation, and the nursery had been closed since 1918. Bobby Jones said, when he first saw the land "Perfect! And to think this ground has been lying here all these years waiting for someone to come along and lay a golf course on it."
3. When did construction begin on Augusta National?

Answer: 1931

Construction began in early 1931. The course opened in December 1932, followed by a formal opening in January 1933.
4. Augusta National has a 9 hole, par 3 course?

Answer: True

This is used in the Par 3 competition held before the main tournament.
5. What is the name of the tough 1st hole?

Answer: Tea Olive

This uphill par 4 has a bunker on the right about 300 yards from the tee, tempting players to try and drive it. Since 1948 it has had a scoring average of 4.18.
6. What is the shortest hole on the course?

Answer: 12th

This is probably the toughest hole on the course. Either you are on the green, or you are dead. This hole had an average score of 3.25 over the 60 years from 1942 to 2002. The Ben Hogan bridge takes the players over Rae's Creek, which guards the green.
7. On what hole did Jack Nicklaus sink a 40 foot putt on his way to a win in the 1975 Masters?

Answer: 16th

At first the 16th was like the 12th, but it was too easy, so a lake was built and the green was moved to the right, and that made the magnificent 16th we know today.
8. What is the 7th hole's name?

Answer: Pampas

This short par 4 has 5 bunkers surrounding the green, 3 in the front and 2 in the back. The hole has been relatively easy compared to the rest of the course.
9. On what hole did Gene Sarazen hole a 4 wood for double eagle (aka albatross) to make a playoff, and eventually win the Masters?

Answer: 15th

This was the "shot heard round the world", and gave The Masters recognition for being one of the best tournaments in the world. The 15th has a pond at the front of the green, and the pond on the 16th comes into play on the back of the green.
10. What is the par for the course?

Answer: 72

The course includes 4 par 5's - 2nd, 8th, 13th and 15th; 4 par 3's - 4th, 6th, 12th and 16th, and 10 par 4's.
