Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This course is Tom Watson's favorite in Ireland. He's played there on many occasions and supervised some course renovations in 1995.

Answer: Ballybunion Old

He is an honorary member and has served as honorary club captain. The course itself has been around since 1893, but only achieved prominence in the 1980s.
2. Another course in the west is located in this town, often referred to as the "St. Andrews of Ireland". The course and the town share the same name.

Answer: Lahinch

The course was originally built by Old Tom Morris in 1892. Redesigned in 1927 by Alistair McKenzie, only the famous 5th (Dell) and 6th (Klondyke) from the Morris design survived.
3. This course, built and designed by H.S. Colt and opened in 1894, is known to the locals as "Rosses Point". What is its real name (think Yeats)?

Answer: County Sligo

Yeats' grave is located on the north side of town. The course is located 5 miles west of town at Rosses Point.
4. Although the club itself was founded in 1896 at another site, the "new" course was designed by the Arnold Palmer/Ed Seay team and opened in 1984. It was?

Answer: Tralee

A visually spectacular course, its beauty can distract from your play. Many scenes from Ryan's Daughter were filmed in the vicinity. It was also Palmer's first foray into Ireland as a golf architect.
5. Which course in Northern Ireland is home to the pro Darren Clarke? In 1951, it was the only course in Ireland to ever host a British Open.

Answer: Royal Portrush

Besides playing this fine championship layout once or twice, you can also visit the Giant's Causeway and Bushmill's distillery which are very close by.
6. Easily the prettiest course in Ireland (and one of its toughest to boot), it occupies a spit of land between Dundrum Bay and the Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland.

Answer: Royal County Down

RCD as it's known has been rated as high as #8 in the world by Golf Magazine. Incidently, the other answers are located in Britain (Birkdale) and Scotland (Troon and Dornoch).
7. Which famous course located just north of Dublin has hosted many Irish Opens over the years?

Answer: Portmarnock

Founded in 1894, it's situated on a small island and before a bridge was built for access, you could either walk to the course in low tide or take a rowboat over at high tide.
8. There are many interesting courses in the Dublin area. Which one of these Irish courses is nowhere even remotely close to Dublin?

Answer: Portsalon

Portsalon is located in the furthest north west reaches of the Republic on the Fanad Peninsula. Remote indeed.
9. The late Payne Stewart would round up some buddies just before the British Open and acclimate himself to the peculiarities of links golf at which course located on the Ring of Kerry?

Answer: Waterville

Very popular with the locals, he ingratiated himself by packing his harmonica along and joining them in evening sing-alongs at the pub. A statue has been erected in his memory by the town. Also, Waterville is a very apt name for this place...it seems to rain permanently there!
10. This golf facility is situated among lovely lakes framed by the Magillicuddy Reeks, Ireland's highest and most picturesque mountain range. Which course is it?

Answer: Killarney Golf and Fishing Club

Killarney is the definitive tourist destination in Ireland. You can have good "craic" there! Carnoustie is in Scotland, by the way.
11. This relatively new course near Cork is reputed to have the finest ocean views of any links course in Ireland.

Answer: Old Head

You also pay dearly for the privilege of those views with green fees at their highest in the country.
12. Which Irish course has the distinction of being the furthest west in Europe? The next parish to the west is in Newfoundland!

Answer: Ceann Sebeal

It's located on the Dingle Peninsula in country so pretty, it'll bring tears to your eyes. It's also the heart of Gaelic Ireland.
13. How many courses in Ireland had the "Royal" designation in 2003?

Answer: 5

Royal Dublin, Royal Belfast, Royal County Down, The Curragh and Royal Portrush.
14. Long deemed to be a "hidden gem" for the golfing tourist trying to avoid golfing tourists, which course makes its debut as an Irish Open venue in 2004?

Answer: County Louth (Baltray)

Located about halfway between Dublin and Belfast on the east coast, the club was formed in 1892 and the present course opened in 1938. It has a reputation for having the finest putting surfaces in Ireland.
15. Which facility hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006?

Answer: The K-Club (County Kildare)

Essentially, billionaire Michael Smurfit, owner of the development, "bought" the honor. Although not a bad course, it pales to the others in my (and many other's) opinion.
