Answer: Lou Gehrig

The Yankees retired the number 4 in 1939, the year that Lou retired from baseball. He died in 1941.
2. Which of the following never reached 3,000 career hits?

Answer: Steve Garvey

The others all had over 3500 career hits. Garvey after 19 seasons, retired with 2599 hits. He led the league twice in hits, and retired in 1987.
3. Who was the first player to hit 700 home runs?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The Babe retired with 714 in 1935. Aaron broke his record, retiring with 755 big ones. Big Mac retired with 583.
4. In what year did the New York Yankees win their first World Series?

Answer: 1923

Although their first appearance was in 1921, their first win came in 1923. Ironically, from 1921 to 1923 it was an all New York World Series for 3 consecutive seasons. The Giants defeated the Yankees in the first 2, then the pinstripes finally won it in 1923, helped with 3 home runs from the Babe.
5. In 1931, Babe Ruth tied for the season home run leader with what other Yankee?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

The others listed were Yankees pitchers on the 1931 roster. The Babe and Lou both hit 46 home runs in 1931. Gehrig also led the league 2 others times, by hiting 49 in 1934 and 1936. If not for his illness, 600 career home runs could have been reached.
6. What brother pitching combination won over 500 games?

Answer: Jim and Gaylord Perry

Dizzy and Paul were the only other pitchers. They won 200 games combined. The Perry brothers combined for 529 wins. Gaylord won 314, while Jim victored 215.
7. Which of the following players set a record by playing for 12 different teams in his career?

Answer: Mike Morgan

The other greats, played for only one team throughout their entire career. Mike Morga began his career in 1978 with the Athletics of Oakland. 22 seasons later in 2002, he retired in an Arizona uniform, after wearing 12 different uniforms. Rickey Henderson, who was known for moving a lot around the league, played for only 9 different teams in 25 seasons, as a Dodger in 2003.
8. Who was the first manager to win the Manager of the Year Award twice?

Answer: Sparky Anderson

The others never won the award. Sparky won his first in 1984 with the Tigers. This was the 2nd year of the manager award. His 2nd came in 1987 again with the Tigers. Sparky took the Cincinnati Reds to 4 World Series, and the Tigers to 1.
9. What pitcher hit 206 batters in their career?

Answer: Walter Johnson

These were all greats, but it was Johnson who hit 206. He once held an American League record for throwing 21 wild pitches, but Juan Guzman of the Blue Jays broke that mark in 1993. Johnson pitched for 21 seasons, retiring with 417 wins, and winning the Triple Crown 3 times.
10. In 1884, Hoss Rabourn pitched a record 59-12 for the season. What National League team did he play for?

Answer: Providence Grays

None of the other teams existed in 1884. Radbourn appeared in 75 games that season, quite normal for those days, and also won the Triple Crown. He retired after 11 seasons, winning 309 games. The Grays finished first in the NL, and won the Championship Series over the New York Metropolitans of the American Association, 3 games to 0.
