Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What team won the 1919 World Series?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

The 1919 World Series will forever be shrouded in controversy. Eight players from the Chicago White Sox, including "Shoeless Joe" Jackson were accused of taking bribes to intentionally lose the Series and were banned permanently from baseball. Jackson initially made a confession but later recanted.

The other players would later say Jackson had nothing to do with the scandal, and one player admitted to bullying "Shoeless Joe" into making a confession.
2. During the 1951 season, competition was fierce in both leagues for the Rookie of the Year award. Who eventually claimed the 1951 American League Rookie of the Year?

Answer: Gil McDougald

Willie Mays was the 1951 National League Rookie of the Year, while Walt Dropo received the American League honor in 1950. Mickey Mantle lost to his teammate Gil McDougald for the 1951 award.
3. The pine tar incident of July, 1983: George Brett hit a two-run home run to put the Royals ahead of the Yankees, 4-3. But do you recall who threw the pitch that George Brett homered?

Answer: Rich "Goose" Gossage

While all these pitchers played for the Yankees, it was "Goose" Gossage who threw the pitch. Afterward, the Yankees' manager requested that Brett's bat be inspected. The umpire ruled the amount of pine tar on the bat exceeded the allowed amount. Brett was called out, giving the win to the Yankees.
4. The 1934 St. Louis Cardinals were a team full of flamboyant, but talented, characters. The "Gashouse Gang" won 95 games, the National League title, and the World Series that year. Which Cardinals' pitcher won 30 games during the 1934 season?

Answer: Dizzy Dean

Paul Dean ended the season with 19 victories, which would still be considered exceptional today. However, Dizzy Dean blew the competition away with 30 victories.
5. In 1987, Mark McGwire shattered the rookie home run record by hitting 49 HRs in a single season. However, he had to share the Major League home run crown with which other slugger?

Answer: Andre Dawson

Andre Dawson also hit 49 home runs, making it his career-best season. Dale Murphy, Mike Schmidt, and Darryl Strawberry were great sluggers at the time, but were far outpaced that season by "Big Mac" McGwire and "The Hawk" Dawson.
6. Which Triple Crown winner hit a home run on his final career at-bat, while playing at his team's home field?

Answer: Ted Williams

Ted Williams' final at-bat came on September 28, 1960, against the Orioles at Fenway Park. He isn't the only player to achieve such a feat, but he was the first Triple Crown Winner to do so.
7. Which baseball player became Nolan Ryan's 5,000th strikeout victim?

Answer: Rickey Henderson

On August 22nd, 1989, the Athletics' Ricky Henderson struck out on a full count in the fifth inning to give Ryan his 5,000th career strikeout.
8. In 1961, Roger Maris hit 61 home runs to break Babe Ruth's season record of 60. But how many home runs did Maris have at the end of his career?

Answer: 275

In 1960, Roger Maris lead the American League in slugging percentage, RBIs, and extra-base hits. He became the AL MVP and All-Star, and won a Gold Glove. So the pressure was very high for him to break Ruth's record during the 1961 season.
9. Which player had the most total strikeouts during the 1960s?

Answer: Bob Gibson

Bob Gibson had 2,071 strikeouts during the 1960s decade, 1960 to 1969. Koufax and Drysdale tied for 3rd with 1,910. Juan Marichal won the most games during the 60s, but is fifth for total strikeouts in the 60s.
10. Which team won the 1903 National League Championship Series?

Answer: Nobody

The League Championship Series didn't start until 1969. In fact, there was no kind of agreed-upon post-season games of any kind between 1891 and 1903. The 1903 World Series came about as an agreement between the owners of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Americans (whose teams were far ahead of everybody else in their league standing) in August, 1903.

The series was originally called "World's Championship Series" and was 9 games. Boston won, 5 games to 3.
