Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following has pitched 10 World Series victories?

Answer: Whitey Ford

Whitey had 10 World Series victories, all with the Yankees. He had appeared in 11 World Series, and had a team record of 6-5. His personal World Series record was 10-8. Ford set numerous World Series records including innings pitched also. None of the other players listed were pitchers.
2. When Rickey Henderson stole his 939th base, whose career record did he break?

Answer: Lou Brock

The other 3 listed were former NASCAR drivers. Brock retired with 938 in 1979, all mostly with the St.Louis Cardinals. Brock stole 118 bases in 1974, breaking the great Maury Wills' mark of 104 in 1962.
3. How many times in the great career of Ty Cobb, did he hit more than 30 home runs in a season?

Answer: 0

Cobb never hit more than 12, which he did twice in 1921 and 1925. Home runs were not a factor in those years, as the season leaders would hit in the neighborhood of 10, of course until the Babe came along. Ty hit 117 home runs in his 24 year career, which was nothing compared to his .366 lifetime batting average, and his 892 stole bases.
4. I played most of my career with the Boston Red Sox, and played with the Yankees and Devil Rays also. I won 5 batting titles, and retired with a .328 average. Who am I?

Answer: Wade Boggs

Boggs played 18 seasons and retired in 1999. Wade also went to 2 World Series, the first with the Red Sox, and the other with the Yankees. Yaz and Williams were career Bostonians, and Lonborg was a pitcher with the Red Sox for a few seasons in his career.
5. What player had the nickname of 'Kitten'?

Answer: Harvey Haddix

Haddix played 14 seasons from 1952-1965. He was most noted for his 12 perfect innings that he pitched in a game on May 26, 1959. This game saw Harvey of the Pirates, go up against Lew Burdette of the Braves. Both pitchers went 13 innings, and the Pirates won 12-1. The spoiler was the Braves' first baseman Joe Adcock, who doubled off Haddix in the 13th inning.
6. How many times in the 12 season career of Roger Maris, did he hit more than 40 home runs in a season?

Answer: 1

Maris' only time of glory was the 1961 season, where he hit 61 home runs for the Yankees. He retired with 275 big ones in 12 seasons.
7. Which of the following set an unfortunate record, of striking out 54 times in World Series play?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

Mickey appeared in 12 World Series with the Yankees. His Series high was 9, against the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960. Mantle still batted .400 in that Series, but the Yankees lost 4 games to 3. The others listed were Chicago Cubs, who never saw a World Series game.
8. Which 2003 team in their franchise history, was once called the Boston Red Caps?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

At the beginning of the Braves in 1876, the franchise was named the Boston Red Caps. They kept this name until 1882, whereas they became the Beaneaters, Rustlers, Bees, Boston Braves, Milwaukee Braves, and finally the Atlanta Braves in 1966.
9. Who set a Chicago White Sox record, for having a career batting average of .340 in a White Sox uniform?

Answer: Joe Jackson

Jackson is the only White Sox player listed. 'Shoeless Joe' came to the White Sox in the mid-season of 1915, after brief stints with the Athletics of Philadelphia and Cleveland. His career average was .356, and .340 as a Chicago White Sox player.
10. Who was the only player inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002?

Answer: Ozzie Smith

All were Hall of Famers, but the other 3 were inducted 64 years earlier in 1938. Ozzie of the Cardinals, set many baseball records for his defensive play and Gold Glove Awards.
