Namibia's Julius Indongo had picked up two of the four major Super Lightweight world titles within a matter of months by defeating Eduard Troyanovsky and Ricky Burns in their respective home countries. The holder of the other two major belts in the division was the undefeated American, Terence Crawford.

The two men met in a fight to become undisputed champion in Crawford's home state of Nebraska, with Crawford emerging victorious via 3rd round knockout.

The fight was scored 115-113 to Golovkin by judge Dave Moretti and 114-114 by Don Trella. Adalaide Byrd's scorecard of 118-110 to Alvarez was widely seen as inconsistent with the fight and attracted severe criticism. It was not the first time controversy had arisen from a judge's scoring of a fight involving Alvarez.

In his 2013 bout with Floyd Mayweather, judge C.J. Ross scored the fight a draw despite the fight widely being seen as a clear Mayweather victory which resulted in Ross' subsequent retirement.
