Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. George Sisler of the St. Louis Browns set a record in 1920 by collecting 257 hits in the season. Who came along and broke George's record in 2004?

Answer: Ichiro Suzuki

Sisler broke the record of Ty Cobb's 248, which Cobb of the Tigers hit in his 1911 AL MVP season. Ichiro of the Mariners popped for 262 hits in 2004. In his 10th season in 2010, he was on mark to collect his 10th consecutive season of 200 hits.
2. The Giants' Barry Bonds set a record in 2001 for being walked 177 times in the season. He broke his own record twice, and in 2004 was walked 232 times. Which Yankee did Bonds break the record of, who set it in 1923 with 170 walks?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth was in his fourth season with the Yankees in 1923, and had already hit 148 home runs in his previous three seasons. Pitchers were not taking chances with the Bambino. The entire 1923 Yankee team was walked 511 times, with Ruth being presented 170 of them. Whitey Witt was the team's runner-up with 67 walks.
3. In 1973, the great Nolan Ryan struck out 383 batters, breaking the record of Dodger Sandy Koufax and his 382 strikeout 1965 season. Whose modern-day record did Koufax break (it was set in 1946)?

Answer: Bob Feller

The others listed had already died. Feller was a career Cleveland Indian of 18 seasons. He struck out 348 amongst his 26-15 record in 1946. Bob still finished sixth in the MVP voting. He had already thrown a Triple Crown in 1940.
4. The biggest thief in baseball was Rickey Henderson, who retired in 2003 as the only player to steal 1000 bases in a career. He stole 1406, and broke whose career stolen base record?

Answer: Lou Brock

Three times in Henderson's career, he topped the 100-season mark in thefts. Brock, who played from 1961-1979 mostly with the Cardinals, touched the 100-plateau only once with 118 in 1974. Lou retired with 938 stolen bases, which broke the then all-time record of Billy Hamilton who retired in 1901 with 914 bases stolen.
5. Pitcher Denny Lemaster of the Milwaukee Braves was somewhat relieved. He set a modern day baseball record in 1964 for throwing 20 wild pitches in the season. Along came a came another pitcher in 1965 to break Denny's record, then break it again in 1966, and have it last throughout the rest of the century. However, that pitcher is not remembered for his wild pitch seasons, but instead for hitting two grand slams in one game in 1966. Who was this pitcher with the new wild pitch season record?

Answer: Tony Cloninger

Ironically, Lemaster and Cloninger were Braves teammates on the roster when Tony set the new record. Cloninger broke it in 1965 with 22 wild pitches. In 1966, he threw 27 fiascos. Tony's two grand slams came against the San Francisco Giants on July 3.
6. Hack Wilson of the Chicago Cubs had 191 RBIs in the 1930 season, a record likely never to be duplicated. He broke the record of which 'Murderers Row' Yankee from the 1927 season?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Ruth hit his then record 60 home runs in 1927, and collected another 164 RBIs. However, it was Gehrig who took the AL MVP honors with his 49 home runs, 175 RBIs, 218 hits, and his .373 average.
7. In 1998, Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals hit 70 home runs, breaking the season record of Yankee Roger Maris. Whose National League season home run record did McGwire break in that 1998 season?

Answer: Hack Wilson

The others listed were all career American League players. Along with Wilson's record-setting 191 RBIs for the Cubs in 1930, Hack also banged out an amazing 56 home runs in the season. This was a National League record that would not be touched for 69 seasons until McGwire hit his 70.
8. When Tiger Denny McLain went 31-6 in the 1968 season, he broke the modern-day record of wins in a season - that was set by which pitcher in the 1930s?

Answer: Dizzy Dean

Dean went 30-7 for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1934, setting a new modern day record. His brother Paul, also went 19-11 in the season, which set more records for teammates.
9. In the 1960s, the thought of striking out 200 times in a season didn't seem possible, even with the strikeout king Reggie Jackson who struck out 171 times in 1968. But, by the 2000s decade, the milestone was being played with by Ryan Howard of the Phillies, who set a new record in 2007 for striking out 199 times. Who broke Howard's record in 2008 and finally surpassed the 200-strikeout mark in a season?

Answer: Mark Reynolds

Reynolds was in his second season of baseball with the Diamondbacks in 2008. He struck out 204 times to be the first to be fanned 200 times. For an encore, Mark broke his own record in 2009 by striking out 223 times. Reggie Jackson led the league five times in strikeouts, and was the first player to reach 2000 career strikeouts. Jackson retired with 2597 strikeouts.
10. In 1966, Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts retired with a record that he would not rather have. He was the first pitcher in baseball history to give up 500 career home runs, and retired with 505. Who came along in 2010 to break Roberts' record?

Answer: Jamie Moyer

The others were all retired. Roberts played most of his 19 seasons with the Phillies. Jamie was in his 24th season in June 2010 when he dished up number 506. It is rather ironic that Roberts died just less than two months before Moyer broke his record. Jamie was also a member of the Phillies when the record was broken.
