Malkom competed in the epee event at the 1900 Olympic Games, held in Paris, France. Persia, later Iran, did not send any more athletes to the Olympics until 1948.

The National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran was founded in 1947, and since the 1948 Games, teams from Iran have entered every Olympiad in the 20th century except 1980 and 1984.

Dizicheh withdrew from the 100m breaststroke competition, and stated that he had been taken ill. There was some speculation that he was in fact told to withdraw to avoid competing against an Israeli athlete, but Iranian team officials denied this. A similar incident had occurred in Athens, at the 2004 Games, in the judo event.

Prince Karim Aga Khan was a skiier, and competed at the 1960 Winter Olympics for Turkey, as well as the 1964 Games for Iran.

Saei has also won an Olympic bronze medal, and several silver and bronze medals at the various World and Asian Championships in taekwondo.
In 2003, he auctioned off several of his medals to raise money for the town of Bam that had suffered terrible damage in an earthquake. In 2004, he was voted Iranian Sports Person of the Year. He retired from competitive sport in 2008.
