Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Milwaukee Bucks went to their first Finals in franchise history in the 1970-71 season. They skunked the Baltimore Bullets four games to none. Who was the MVP of the series?

Answer: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Kareem averaged 26.6 points and had 17 rebounds per game in the playoffs. Julius Erving was drafted by the 1972 Bucks, but ended up in the ABA. What a dynasty this might have been.
2. Who was the first team to win three consecutive NBA titles?

Answer: Lakers

The Lakers were in Minneapolis from the 1951-52 to the 1953-54 seasons. They defeated Max Zaslofsky and the New York Knicks in the first two, then the Syracuse Nationals in the third. The Boston Celtics were the second team to three-peat.
3. The Boston Celtics ran off eight consecutive NBA championships, until which team in the 1966-67 season stopped their streak?

Answer: Philadelphia 76ers

The 76ers took out Boston in the Eastern Division Finals, four games to one, including a game five win of 140-116 to end the Celtics' run. Wilt Chamberlain with Philadelphia saw to that, averaging almost 22 points per game, along with 29 rebounds in the playoffs.

The Finals would be his Philadelphia 76ers against the San Francisco Warriors. The 76ers won it four games to two, but Rick Barry of the Warriors was still the Finals MVP.
4. The Hawks franchise won their first NBA Championship in the 1957-58 season. They would return to the Finals in 1959-1960 and 1960-61, but lose them both. In the next 40 seasons to round out the century, how many more appearances did the Hawks' franchise make to the Finals?

Answer: 0

The Hawks were blanked. Their first championship was led by Bob Pettit, Cliff Hagan, and Ed Macauley. The franchise moved to Atlanta for the 1968-69 season, but were knocked out of the Western Division Finals two seasons in a row. It would be the last time in the century that they would even see a Division Finals game.
5. Which former ABA team by name, was the first to win a NBA Championship?

Answer: San Antonio Spurs

The others listed never played in the ABA. The Spurs franchise began in 1968 as the Dallas Chaparrals. In 1971, they changed their name to the Texas Chaparrals, but changed back to the Dallas Chaparrals again. In 1974, they became the San Antonio Spurs while still playing in the ABA.

They joined the NBA in 1976. Their first NBA Championship came in the 1998-99 season. They were led by Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and Steve Kerr. They defeated the Knicks in the Finals.
6. Who was the first team to lose three consecutive NBA Championships?

Answer: New York Knicks

The Knicks lost three in 1951, 1952, and 1953. They were victims to the Rochester Royals in their first, then the Minneapolis Lakers in their second and third. They would not see another NBA Finals almost 20 seasons, when they defeated the Lakers in 1970.
7. This team had never won a Conference Finals before the 2005-06 season, then they found it, won it, and even won the NBA Championship in the season. Which team was it?

Answer: Miami Heat

The others had all been to the Finals prior. The Heat franchise began in 1989. It would be six seasons before the team would end a season over .500. The 2005-06 season of the Heat was led by Dwyane Wade, Shaq, Gary Payton, and Antoine Walker. They defeated the Mavericks in the Finals, and Wade picked up the Finals MVP award.
8. It took 20 seasons of existence before the NBA actually had a Finals MVP award presented. Who was the first to receive this inaugural award?

Answer: Jerry West

It was 1969, and the Finals was the Boston Celtics pitted against the Los Angeles Lakers. Although the Celtics won the series four games to three, West averaged 30.9 points per game and took the award. Hailing from West Virginia, Jerry's nickname was "Zeke from Cabin Creek". He was also nicknamed "Mr. Clutch".
9. How many times was Wilt Chamberlain the NBA Finals MVP in his career?

Answer: 1

Wilt had been to the playoffs 13 times in his career, but it was his 1971-72 Lakers that brought him the Finals MVP award. The Lakers went 69-13 in the season, and won the Finals against the Knicks, four games to one.
10. The National Basketball Association began in 1949, and in the first 25 seasons of the NBA, the Boston Celtics took 11 NBA Championships. Who lost the most NBA Finals in those 25 seasons?
