Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "We are the Navy Blues", [Lily of Laguna]

Answer: Carlton

The words of the Carlton team song were written by the players backs in around 1930, and set to the tune of music hall favourite of the time. The club motto is 'A sound mind in a healthy body' and the club was one of the eight founding teams of the Victorian Football League in 1894.
2. "See the Bombers Fly Up", [(Keep Your) Sunny Side Up]

Answer: Essendon

In 1959, Kevin Andrews adapted the song "(Keep Your) Sunny Side Up" from the 1929 movie of the same name to become the song sung by the Essendon Bombers (not terribly tunefully!) each time they win. They were formed in 1872, and have won 16 premierships.
3. "The Pride of South Australia", [US Marines' Hymn]

Answer: Adelaide

The song was first used as a rallying cry in 1994, when the team came into the AFL, during the expansion of the Victorian Football League into a national association. The words, sung to the tune of the Marine Hymn, were written by Bill Sanders.
4. "There's A Big Big Sound" [Original]

Answer: Greater Western Sydney Giants

The song "There's A Big Big Sound" was written for the AFL's newest franchise, Greater Western Sydney Giants. The colours for the team are orange, charcoal and white.
5. "Sons of the West", [Sons of the Sea]

Answer: Western Bulldogs

The Western Bulldogs, then Footscray, were founded in 1877. They used the sea shanty as their team song with words further adapted when they became the Western Bulldogs.
6. "Cheer, Cheer The Red and The White", [Notre Dame Victory March]

Answer: Sydney

The South Melbourne football club, the forerunner of the Sydney Swans, were granted permission to use the "Notre Dame Victory March" in 1961.
7. "We're from Tiger Land", [Row, Row, Row]

Answer: Richmond

The Richmond lyrics of the show tune from the Ziegfeld Follies of 1912 were written by Jack Malcolmson, and was adopted in 1972. Richmond's club song was originally "Onward the Tigers" sung to the tune of Waltzing Matilda.
8. "Power to Win", [Original]

Answer: Port Adelaide

Port Adelaide has a long history in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), and became the first pre-existing team to join the AFL in 2004. "Power to Win" was written especially for the team.
9. "Join in the Chorus", [Wee Deoch an Doris]

Answer: North Melbourne

Sir Harry Lauder was the creator of the song "Wee Deoch an Doris", later adapted for the North Melbourne team song. "Join in the Chorus" is believed to be the oldest club anthem of any AFL club.
10. "It's a Grand Old Flag", [You're a Grand Old Flag]

Answer: Melbourne

Keith Truscott was a World War II ace fighter pilot but was also an Australian Rules footballer with the Melbourne Football Club. He wrote the second verse of the Melbourne Club song, and the team annual 'best and fairest' award was named for him.
