Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Grasshoppers
Answer: Switzerland
Grasshopper Club Zürich was founded in 1886 and is one of the most highly decorated clubs in Swiss football history. The club maintains a local rivalry with the city's second major club, FC Zürich. The origin of its name is unclear but is thought to allude to the vision of the club founders as well as its positive style of play.
2. Newell's Old Boys
Answer: Argentina
A lot of club names in Argentina (and South America in general) reflect the fact that the game was exported to the region by Englishmen. Isaac Newell, an English teacher, was one of the pioneers of football in Argentina. His son Claudio founded the club in the city of Rosario in 1903 and named it after his father.
Their local rivalry with Rosario Central is considered second only to the one between River Plate and Boca Juniors of the country's capital, Buenos Aires. Ah, and this is where Leo Messi grew up until he moved to Barcelona at the age of 13.
3. Chicken Inn
Answer: Zimbabwe
What if your founders (2006) are a leading local fast food chain? You are aptly named Chicken Inn Football Club, nicknamed the "Gamecocks" and boast a rooster in your logo.
4. Santa Claus
Answer: Finland
FC Santa Claus Arctic Circle was founded in Rovaniemi (Lapland) in 1993 as the result of the merger of two local clubs whose names in the shorthand Finnish club convention were RoRe and RoLa. The club has spent many seasons since its inception in low-tier Finnish leagues known as the Kolmonen (4th tier) and Kakkonen (3rd tier).
5. Go Ahead Eagles
Answer: Netherlands
Founded in Deventer in 1902 as Be Quick, they soon improved on it by renaming it Go Ahead, with the Eagles suffix added in 1971. The club won four Dutch championships between 1916 and 1933 but did not manage to maintain this level of success in the following years. However, they have played top flight football in the Eredivisie in the 21st century.
6. Home United
Answer: Singapore
Founded in 1940 as Police Football Club, it underwent a name change in 1997 to Home United in order to reflect the fact that it represented the full scope of Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs. Their nickname is "The Protectors". They were one of six amateur clubs to join the S.League (Singapore's top division) when it was founded in 1996.
7. Humble Lions
Answer: Jamaica
Their name may sound like an oxymoron, but I think it is a lovely name. This Rastafarian club was founded in 1974. They are often referred to in the singular form, i.e. "Humble Lion", which is one of the Rastafarian culture's symbols signifying a benevolent leader.
8. The Strongest
Answer: Bolivia
Founded in La Paz (1908) as "The Strong Football Club", the club won its first title in 1911, and was renamed The Strongest. In 1930 they succeeded in winning the title, keeping a clean sheet throughout the league. Ever since the club has lived up to its name as one of Bolivia's dominant clubs.
9. Middelfart
Answer: Denmark
Before you laugh, in old Danish "middelfart" means "middle way". Middelfart G&BK was founded in 1900. Their home ground is Middelfart Stadion in the town of Middelfart on the large island of Funen in Southern Denmark.
10. Hapoel Beer Sheva
Answer: Israel
The club was founded in 1949, one year after the inception of the state of Israel. The city of Be'er Sheva lies on the northern border of the Negev Desert, hence the club nickname - The Camels. In the mid-1970s it achieved its first two league titles in succession and after a long hiatus won the State Cup in 1997. Next came harsh seasons of relegation, which ended in 2007 when the club was acquired by businesswoman Alona Barkat gradually returning to its glory days.
Be'er means "water well" in Hebrew, but the "beer" ring meant the club was often mocked as a pub team when they played in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds and the UEFA Europa League group stages, however less so after the good results they have achieved.
