Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who performed the national anthem before the game?

Answer: Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood was the lucky lady selected to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner". Super Bowl XLIV marked the third straight year that a contestant from American Idol had performed the national anthem.
2. Where was Super Bowl XLIV played at?

Answer: Miami, Florida

On this occasion, the game was played in Miami in the newly-renamed Sun Life Stadium. This is the fifth time this particular stadium has hosted the Super Bowl, and the 10th time that Miami has hosted it. The other five were played in the Orange Bowl.
3. After the Saints won the toss and were forced to punt, the Colts gained possession. What was the result of the Colts' first possession?

Answer: Field goal

Colts' kicker Matt Stover knocked in a 38-yard attempt. Consequently, he became the oldest person to play (and therefore score) in a Super Bowl.
4. New Orleans, on their second possession of the game had to punt again. Indianapolis, starting on their own 4-yard line, mounted a 96-yard touchdown drive that included a 19-yard TD pass to whom?

Answer: Pierre Garcon

Pierre Garcon caught only four touchdown passes in the season in 47 receptions.
5. The Saints rallied and scored six unanswered points on two field goals in the second quarter, including one as time ran out in the half. Who kicked these two field goals?

Answer: Garrett Hartley

Hartley nailed these two to get the Saints their first points. Stover and Vinatieri played for the Colts (although Vinatieri did not play). Graham played for the Cincinnati Bengals, who lost 24-14 to the New York Jets in the Wildcard game.
6. Who performed at the halftime show?

Answer: The Who

While all famous bands come out of England, The Who had the honor and distinction to perform at Super Bowl XLIV. Also, while Pink Floyd and The Beatles have never performed at the Super Bowl halftime, the Rolling Stones have, in 2006 at Super Bowl XL in Detroit.
7. At the beginning of the third quarter in Super Bowl XLIV, the Colts were up 10-6, and were set to receive the ball. However, New Orleans executed a play that caught everyone off-guard. What type of play did they do?

Answer: Onside kick

New Orleans attempted an onside kick and recovered it. The ball hit Colts player Hank Baskett, but he was unable to gain possession. The Saints went on to drive 58 yards to score a touchdown and take the lead, 13-10.
8. In the third quarter, the Colts would not take being behind lightly. Indianapolis took the ball 76 yards to force yet another lead change by scoring yet another touchdown. Who scored on this play?

Answer: Joseph Addai

Addai scored this touchdown on a four-yard rush. The drive included three passes worth 45 yards to Dallas Clark.
9. Down 17-13, the Saints went on to score yet again with a field goal and touchdown, including a successful two-point conversion, to put them up by seven. On their next drive, Indianapolis scored no points. How did their drive end?

Answer: They were intercepted

Saints' cornerback Tracy Porter intercepted a Manning pass and returned it 74 yards for the score. The extra point put the Saints up 31-17.
10. With 3:12 remaining in the game, the Colts seemed determined to at least tie it up at 31. The Colts had an amazing drive down to within three yards of the goal line, only to have what kind of penalty set them back 10 yards?

Answer: Offensive pass interference

Indianapolis was called on offensive pass interference. They would go on to get close again, only to have their fourth-and-goal pass fall incomplete, essentially sealing the 31-17 win for New Orleans, and giving the city their first Super Bowl Championship.
