1. Which National League team took the honors by winning the league's first World Series?

Answer: New York Giants

The first World Series took place in 1903, and saw the AL Boston Pilgrims defeat the Pirates. With no World Series in 1904, 1905 saw the first NL team win it all. The Giants defeated the Philadelphia Athletics, four games to one.
2. Who was the first National League pitcher to be inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

Although the others were pitchers, they were all inducted under American League teams. Mathewson spent his entire 17-season career with the New York Giants except for one game. He won 373 games. Christy was one of the first five players inducted in 1936.
3. The first Cy Young award was presented in 1956, and it was given to which National League pitcher?

Answer: Don Newcombe

The others all won the Cy Young but with American League teams. Newcombe was in his sixth season with the Brooklyn Dodgers when he went 27-7 for the season. Newcombe also won the NL MVP in 1956. Don then self-destructed in the World Series with a 21.21 ERA in the Dodgers' loss to the Yankees.

Answer: Chicago White Stockings

The other teams did not exist in the National League in the 1870s. The Chicago White Stockings franchise was the initial team which later became the Chicago Cubs in 1903. In 1876, they won the NL pennant by going 52-14. The team was managed by Al Spalding. They won the pennant by six games over runner-up St. Louis Brown Stockings, who folded after the 1877 season.
5. 1877 saw baseball's first pitching Triple Crown by Tommy Bond of the Boston Red Caps. The following season saw baseball's first batting Triple Crown that was won by which player?

Answer: Paul Hines

The others were all Triple Crown winners, but none were born yet in 1878. Hines played for Chicago in 1877 and came to the Providence Grays in 1878. He hit only four home runs to lead the league.

Answer: Walter Alston

The others all played and managed in both the American and National League. Alston played for one game with one at-bat with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1936. That was it for his playing career. He became the manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954 and made to the move to Los Angeles. He retired in 1976 with 2040 wins, seven World Series appearances and four rings.

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

The other teams folded after only two seasons. The Athletics won only 14 games in the 1876 season and called it quits. They still finished in seventh place while the Cincinnati Reds took the honors of last place by winning only nine games.
