Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The drama began off the pitch before the 2008-09 season even began. Which two clubs were initially excluded from taking part in the competition by UEFA?

Answer: CSKA Sofia (Bulgaria) and FC Porto (Portugal)

FC Porto were initially excluded after being found guilty of bribing referees en route to winning the Portuguese SuperLiga in the 2003-04 season. However, UEFA reinstated the club after an appeal, due to the ongoing nature of the disciplinary process by the Portuguese FA.

Due to outstanding debts to various bodies, CSKA Sofia were not granted a UEFA License giving them permission to take part in the competiton. Subsequently, their place was taken in the tournament by Levski Sofia.
2. Of the 28 clubs which took part in the first qualifying round of the competition, which two progressed through all three rounds of qualifying to make the group stages of the tournament (for their first ever appearance in the gorup stage)?

Answer: Anorthosis Famagusta (Cyprus) and BATE Borisov (Belarus)

Anorthosis saw off Pyunik Yerevan of Armenia in the first round, before wins against Austria's Rapid Vienna and Olympiakos of Greece took them into the group stages for the first time. They finished bottom of a group containing Inter Milan, Panathanaikos and Werder Bremen.

BATE's run to their first appearance in the group stage included wins over Valur of Iceland, Anderlecht of Belgium and Levski Sofia from Bulgaria. However, like Anorthosis, they also finished bottom of a difficult group containing Real Madrid, Juventus and Zenit St. Petersburg
3. Which club suffered a shock defeat in the qualifying stages after having made the final of a European competition in the previous season?

Answer: Rangers FC (Scotland)

Rangers were dumped out of the competition in the second qualifying phase, going out 2-1 on aggregate to Kaunas of Lithuania, 83 days after losing in the UEFA Cup final to Zenit St. Petersburg. The other three clubs all went out at the third qualifying stage, Olympiakos to Anorthosis Famagusta, FC Twente to Arsenal and Sparta Prague to Panathanaikos of Greece.
4. Who scored the first goal of the group stages for the season?

Answer: Sergio Aguero (Athletico Madrid)

Aguero bagged Athletico's first in a 3-0 win away to PSV Eindhoven after 9 minutes on the 16th September 2008. All the other three players did score on the same evening. Joe Cole scored Chelsea's second on the half hour mark in a 4-0 win against Bordeaux. Xavi's 87th minute goal against Sporting Lisbon was Barcelona's third in a 3-1 win at home to Sporting Lisbon. Culio's first goal for Cluj after 27 minutes gave the Romanian champions an equalizer away to AS Roma, before Culio scored a second to give his side a shock 2-1 win.
5. Which two clubs finished the group stage with only one point from 6 games, the worst record of all 32 teams taking part in this phase of the tournament?

Answer: FC Basel (Switzerland) and Steaua Bucharest (Romania)

One point from a possible 18 for both Basel and Steaua ensured they both finished bottom of their respective groups with two of the poorer records since the competition expanded to 32 teams in the group stage. The other six clubs also finished bottom of their respective groups, but the next worse record was two points, attained by Fenerbahce.
6. Which was the only club from the 16 to progress into the knockout phase with a seeding of #4 (it was seeded in Pot 4 for the group stage draw)?

Answer: Athletico Madrid (Spain)

Athletico Madrid finished second in Group D, making them one of the few sides to ever be seeded in Pot 4 of the Champions' League group stage draw and still make the Last 16 stage (aka the Knock-Out Round, the round before the quarter-finals).

Sporting Lisbon and Panathanaikos also qualified for the knockout phase of the Champions' League, but the former were seeded in Pot 2, with Panathanaikos being the only side to progress after being seeded in Pot 3. Zenit were also seeded in Pot 3 for the initial draw, but finished third in their group and failed to progress into the knockout phase.
7. Which club claimed a record aggregate victory in the Last 16 stage of the competition, winning their tie 12-1 over two legs?

Answer: Bayern Munich (Germany)

Bayern defeated Sporting Lisbon 5-0 away in the first leg and 7-1 at home in the return to claim their record victory, beating the previous record held by Lyon, who defeated Werder Bremen 10-2 on aggregate in the 2004-05 season.

Liverpool and Villarreal also won their Last 16 ties, the former defeating Real Madrid 5-0 on aggregate, while Villarreal sneaked past Panathanaikos after a 3-2 win over two legs. Inter Milan were knocked out at the Last 16 stage, losing 2-0 on aggregate to Manchester United.
8. How many English clubs made the semi-final stage of the competition?

Answer: 3

Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all made the semi-finals, being joined by Spain's Barcelona. In the semis, Manchester United defeated Arsenal 4-1 on aggregate, while Barcelona's last-gasp goal in the second leg saw them into the final, their tie against Chelsea finishing 1-1 on aggregate, with Barcelona progressing by virtue of away goals (first leg Barcelona v Chelsea 0-0, and seocnd leg Chelsea v Barcelaon 0-1).
9. Who scored Barcelona's two goals in the final against Manchester United to secure the club its third European Cup/Champions League title?

Answer: Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi

Eto'o scored after 10 minutes to give Barcelona the initiative, before Messi's goal in the 70th minute ensured Barcelona would win their third title, the previous two coming in 1992 and 2006.

United's defeat denied them the opportunity to win the tournament for the fourth time. Their previous victories had come in 1968, 1999 and in the preceding season, 2008.
10. Who finished as the top scorer in the competition, starting from the group stages (i.e. ignoring goals scored in the qualifying rounds)?

Answer: Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

Messi's 9 goals left Klose trailing in joint second (with Liverpool's Steven Gerrard) on 7 goals. Adebayor and Del Piero both scored 5 goals over the course of the competition.
