1. Who won the UEFA Champions League in season 2002-03?

Answer: AC Milan

AC Milan defeated Juventus 3-2 on penalties after a 0-0 draw on the 28th May, 2003, at Old Trafford, Manchester. Real Madrid were knocked out in the semi-finals by Juventus 4-3 on aggregate, and Manchester United were knocked out by Real Madrid in the Quarter-Finals 6-5 on aggregate.
2. Who finished as the top scorer in the 2002-03 season, with 12 goals?

Answer: Ruud van Nistelrooy

Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy finished with 12 goals, the highest in the competition. Close behind him were AC Milan's Filippo Inzaghi (10 goals), with Deportivo's Roy Makaay, Real Madrid's Raul Gonzalez and Inter's Hernan Crespo scoring 9 each.
3. By making the second group phase in 2002-03, FC Basel became the first team from Switzerland to do so.

Answer: True

FC Basel surprised everyone by beating Celtic, Spartak Moscow and Liverpool on their way to the second group phase, before being eliminated despite finishing level on points with Juventus, due to their lesser record against the Italian team.
4. The 2002-03 season was the first to feature UEFA's new silver goal rule. In which of the following matches did the rule come into use?

Answer: FC Barcelona vs Juventus - Second Leg

The silver goal rule replaced the golden goal rule for the 2002-03 season. Instead of the game being terminated when a team scored in extra time, the game finished at the end of the half (of extra time) in which the goal was scored. FC Barcelona vs Juventus finished 1-1 in the first leg, and the same result occurred in the second leg, until Marcelo Zalayeta scored in the 114th minute.

The game continued until the full 120 minutes had been played, according to the new rule, and Juventus ran out 2-1 winners and progressed to the Semi-Finals.
5. The 2002-03 season was the first to contain two teams from the same country in the Final.

Answer: False

The only previous time that this had occurred was in the 1999-2000 season, when Spanish sides Real Madrid and Valencia played in the final, with Real Madrid winning 3-0.
6. The 2002-03 season saw the first team to win the Champions League after finishing outside the top 3 in their domestic league in the previous season.

Answer: True

After a disappointing 4th place finish in the Italian Serie A in 2001-02, the Italian team more than made up for it with the Champions League trophy in 2002-03.
7. Clarence Seedorf became the first player to win the Champions League for three different clubs in 2002-03. With which other two clubs did he previously win the trophy?

Answer: Ajax and Real Madrid

Clarence Seedorf was a winning member of Ajax's successful 1994-95 season, and three years later was a member of Real Madrid's successful 1997-98 season.
8. On Tuesday 27th May, 2003, Sir Bobby Charlton and Eusébio announced their selection for the offical UEFA Champions League all-star team for 2002-03. Which goalkeeper was selected as the best for the season?

Answer: Gianluigi Buffon

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon had a fantastic season in goal for Juventus, and deservedly took out the honour.
9. Only three teams managed to score 6 goals in one game. Two of the teams were Valencia (6-2 vs Basel) and Real Madrid (6-0 vs Racing Genk). What was the other team?

Answer: Olympiakos

Olympiakos surprisingly defeated Bayer Leverkusen 6-2 in the first game of the first group stage, but it was their only victory in the competition, and they finished bottom of their group while Bayer Leverkusen progressed to the next round. The most goals Lyon scored in a game was in their 5-0 win against Rosenborg, the most goals Manchester United scored in a game was in their win over Maccabi Haifa, while for Juventus the most goals they scored in a game was in their 5-0 win over Dinamo Kiev.
10. Who scored the winning penalty in the final?

Answer: Andrei Shevchenko

Andrei Shevchenko put away the winning penalty after Serginho and Alessandro Nesta also scored. Clarence Seedorf was one of two Milan players to miss from the spot, but it didn't matter thanks to 3 saves from Milan goalkeeper Dida.
