Kosovo had been accepted as a UEFA member in 2016, but were not permitted to submit a team for the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League due to licensing issues. Trepca '89 became the first team from Kosovo to compete in the UEFA Champions League when they were drawn against Vikingur Gota of Faroe Islands in the first qualifying round in 2017-18. The lost 6-2 on aggregate.

Celtic's Kristoffer Ajer put the ball in his own net in this match. This was the second year running the two sides had met in qualifying. Celtic knocked Astana out in the third qualifying round in 2016-17 with a more conservative 3-2 aggregate victory.

Those teams were Qarabag of Azerbaijan and Red Bull Leipzig of Germany. Leipzig had qualified automatically for the group stage by finishing second in the German Bundesliga in the 2016-17 season. Qarabag, on the other hand, had to win three qualifying rounds, including an impressive away goals victory against a Champions League side FC Copenhagen of Denmark in the Play-off Round. Qarabag would go on to finish bottom of their group, while Leipzig finished third to qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League.

Liverpool defeated both Maribor and Spartak Moscow with a score of 7-0, while PSG defeated Celtic 7-1. Qarabag's defence were slightly better when they lost their opening group game 6-0 to Chelsea.

All the listed teams finished bottom of their respective groups, but it was only Benfica who lost six games out of a possible six. Their group consisted of Manchester United, Basel and CSKA Moscow.

This was the worst group stage campaign by a Portuguese team at the time, and included Benfica's biggest loss in the UEFA Champions League, 5-0 against Basel. Surprising, considering just one year before Benfica had qualified for the knockout stages for the first time in their history. They had won the old European Cup in 1961 and 1962, and had reached the final of the UEFA Europea Leagye in 2013 and 2014, although they lost on both occasions to Chelsea and Sevilla respectively.

Brazilian striker Vagner Love joined Besiktas in January 2018 from fellow Turkish side Alanyaspor. Vagner Love is perhaps best remembered for his time at CSKA Moscow, where he scored their third in a 3-1 victory against Sporting Lisbon in the final of he 2004-05 UEFA Cup, becoming the first Russian side to win a major European trophy.

Liverpool won the first leg at Anfield 3-0, although the match was marred by events before the game, where Liverpool fans had pelted the Manchester City team bus with bottles and flares. Manchester City played a very attacking team in the return leg in Manchester, and Gabriel Jesus scored the opening goal for the hosts inside the opening two minutes. Just before half-time, a goalkeeping error saw the ball ricochet back off Liverpool defender James Milner, before Leroy Sane scored what appeared to be a second for Manchester City.

The goal was ruled offside, however, and in his frustration, City manager Pep Guardiola was sent of at half time. Had the goal been given it would have changed the complexion of the tie, but instead Liverpool went on to win the game 2-1, with a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Liverpool led the first leg 5-0 at home against Roma, but with 10 minutes left, Edin Dzeko pulled one back for the visitors. Diego Perotti scored a penalty not long after to give some, albeit small, hope to Roma. In the return leg, Liverpool led 2-1 at half-time, before Edin Dzeko scored again for Roma. Two late goals from Radja Nainggolan gave Roma a 4-2 victory on the night, but it was not enough, and Liverpool progressed 7-6 on aggregate.

Benzema opened the scoring for Madrid in the 51st minute when Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius threw the ball straight to his feet. Sadio Mane scored an equaliser not long after for Liverpool, but a superb overhead kick to give Madrid the lead again. Karus made a second error late on when his fumble allowed a long range shot from Bale to go in, making the final score 3-1 to Madrid.
