PAOK were drawn against Metalist Kharkiv of Ukraine in the third round of qualifying matches. Kharkiv won the tie 3-1 on aggregate, but were later disqualified from playing in UEFA club competitions in 2013-14 due to previous match fixing. PAOK were then reinstated to the competition, but were defeated 4-3 on aggregate by Germany's Schalke 04 in the play-off round.

Although Austria Wien had qualified for the UEFA Champions League on three previous occasions (1993-94, 2003-04 and 2006-07) they had never previously reached the group stage of the competition.

This was the final round of games in Group H, which saw four previous winners of the Champions League / European Cup face each other. Barcelona (1992, 2006, 2009 & 2011) won the group, with AC Milan (1963, 1969, 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003 & 2007) second. Ajax (1971, 1972, 1973 & 1995) finished third, while Celtic (1967) finished bottom of the group, picking up just three points thanks to a 2-1 home victory against Ajax.

Marseille, winners of the first ever Champions League in 1992-93 (rebranded from being simply the European Cup), lost all six of their games. Dortmund, Arsenal and Napoli all finished on 12 points, having each won 4 games and lost two. The three teams were then ranked based on their head-to-head goal difference. Dortmund were then adjudged to be the winners of the group, with Arsenal securing second place. Napoli had to settle for a place in the UEFA Europa League.

Madrid faced Galatasaray, Juventus and FC Copenhagen in Group B. They dropped just two points, drawing 2-2 away to Juventus, and scored a total of 20 goals. Nine of these were scored by Cristiano Ronaldo, who finished as the tournament's top goalscorer with 17 goals. He was also the only player to score a goal in every round of the competition.

The last 16 leg sees the teams who finish top of their respective groups in the group stage play against the teams who finished second in their groups. The second-place teams usually play the first leg at home. In 2013-14, the away teams win 6 out of 8 ties.

In the other two, Galatasaray drew 1-1 with Chelsea, and Olympiakos won 2-0 at home against Manchester United. Chelsea and Manchester United made amends in the second leg, winning 2-0 and 3-0 respectively to progress to the quarter-finals. All other victors in the first leg also went on to progress to the quarter-finals.

Eden Hazard scored a penalty for Chelsea in the first leg of their quarter-final tie, as PSG won 3-1. Chelsea won the return leg 2-0 with goals from Andre Schurrle and Demba Ba to level the tie at 3-3. Chelsea progressed thanks to having scored a goal away from home.

Bayern Munich were the defending champions, having won the competition in 2012-13. That was their fifth win in the competition, having previously won the cup in 1974, 1975, 1976 and 2001. Chelsea won their first Champions League trophy in 2012, defeating Bayern Munich in the final.

Real Madrid were aiming to become the first team to win 10 European Cup / Champions League trophies, having previously won in 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1998, 2000 and 2002.

Atletico's best result in the competition had come in 1974, where they reached the final. They drew 1-1 with Bayern, taking the match to a replay, which Bayern won 4-0. This was the first final in the competition's history to go to a replay.

Estadio do Sporto Lisoa e Benfica, more commonly referred to as Estadio da Luz, was officially opened on 25 October 2003 with an exhibition match, in which Benfica defeated Nacional of Uruguay 2-1. The stadium also hosted the final of the 2004 European Championship, which saw Greece defeat the host nation 1-0 to claim their first major international trophy.

The 2013-14 UEFA Champions League final saw Atletico aiming to win their first Champions League / European Cup, while Real were hoping to pick up their 10th victory. Atletico led for much of the match, but a late Sergio Ramos equaliser took the game into extra-time, where Real added another three goals to win the match 4-1. Atletico were able to take some consolation that season as they won the Spanish La Liga for the first time in 18 years.

Answer: Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo was the top scorer in the competition with 17 goals. Nine of these were scored in the group stages, where he scored in five out of six matches, only failing to score in Real's 4-1 home win against Galatasaray of Turkey. He added four goals over two legs against Schalke 04 in the last 16.

He scored Real's third in their 3-0 home win against Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-final, a goal which would prove crucial as Real won the tie 3-2 on aggregate. He netted a further two goals in the second leg of Real's semi-final victory over Bayern Munich, before completing his tally with a penalty in the last minute of extra-time in the final.
