Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A total of 78 teams from 53 nations competed in the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League. Which nation had the most representatives?

Answer: Spain

The top three ranked UEFA nations are each allocated 4 teams. For the 2016-17 season, these nations were Spain, England and Germany. Spain were also able to include the winners of the 2015-16 UEFA Europa League, Sevilla, meaning they sent a total of 5 teams: Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla and Villarreal.
2. Two of UEFA's 55 member nations were not represented by clubs in the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League. One of these was Liechtenstein. What was the other?

Answer: Kosovo

Liechtenstein do not have a professional football league, with their teams instead playing in the Swiss league. Kosovo had only qualified as a UEFA member in May 2016. UEFA were willing to allow the Kosovo league champions to participate in the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League, but only if they could meet certain licensing criteria.

Unfortunately, that team, Feronikeli, were unable to do so and so were not permitted to compete.
3. How many teams made their debuts the group stage of the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League?

Answer: 2

Those teams were Rostov (Russia) and Leicester City (England).
4. The biggest winning margin in the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League was Barcelona's 7-0 home victory against Celtic. Which player scored a hat-trick for Barcelona?

Answer: Lionel Messi

All four of the listed players scored in Barcelona's victory, but it was Messi who netted a hat-trick. He scored a total of 10 goals in the group stage, including another hat-trick against Manchester City.
5. A total of 255 goals were scored across 96 games in the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League group stage. How many games ended goal-less?

Answer: 6

The highest scoring game was Borussia Dortmund's 8-4 victory over Legia Warsaw. Arsenal's 18 goals in the group stage would normally have been enough to make them the top scorers, but in 2016-17 they only finished third in this category behind Dortmund (21) and Barcelona (20).
6. Barcelona achieved a remarkable feat in the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League round of 16, by becoming the first team to win a tie after losing the first leg by a margin of 4 goals. Which team did they face?

Answer: Paris Saint-Germain

PSG won the first leg 4-0 in Paris and were favourites to progress through the tie. Barcelona had other ideas though, and despite a PSG away goal, Barcelona managed to net the required 6 goals to win the second leg 6-1 and the tie 6-5, with their final three goals coming in the 88th, 91st and 95th minutes.
7. Leicester City were the surprise team during the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League, reaching the quarter-final stage during their first season in the competition. Which team eventually knocked them out?

Answer: Atletico Madrid

Leicester had qualified for the tournament as champions of England, a remarkable feat in itself. They went on to top their group, which consisted of FC Porto, Copenhagen and Club Brugge. In the round of 16 they overturned a 2-1 first leg deficit against the 2015-16 UEFA Europa League champions Sevilla to reach the quarter finals.

Their luck ran out, however, against an Atletico side which had appeared in two of the last three UEFA Champions League finals, and despite their efforts they lost 2-1 on aggregate (0-1 away and 1-1 at home).
8. A total of 11 goals were scored in the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League semi-finals. How many different goal scorers shared these goals?

Answer: 8

Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid 4-2 on aggregate, while Juventus defeated Monaco 4-1 on aggregate. The goalscorers were: Cristiano Ronaldo (3), Gonzalo Higuaín (2), Dani Alves, Antoine Griezmann, Isco, Mario Mandzukic, Kylian Mbappe and Saul.
9. Real Madrid defeated Juventus 4-1 in the final of the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League to claim their second successive title. Which was the last team to achieve back-to-back wins in the UEFA Champions League/European Cup?

Answer: AC Milan

AC Milan won the European Cup in 1988-89 and 1989-90. Although Juventus reached three consecutive finals 1996-1997-1998 they won only one of these (1996 against Ajax). Manchester United reach two consecutive finals in 2007-08 and 2008-09, but won only the first of these against Chelsea (lost the second to Barcelona). Valencia reached two consecutive finals in 1999-2000 and 2000-01 but failed to win either.

This was Real's 12th win in the competition, and their third in four years. Juventus, on the other hand, had reached the final for the fifth time since their 1996 victory and had lost them all (1997, 1998, 2003, 2015 and 2017).
10. The 2016-17 UEFA Champions League final was played in which UK city?

Answer: Cardiff

Although predominantly used for Rugby Union, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff was the home of Welsh football during the 2000s and was used for English cup finals (FA Cup, League Cup, Football League trophy, play-off finals, Community Shield and Challenge Cup) from 2001 to 2007 while Wembley Stadium was being rebuilt.

The Welsh FA had previously bid for the Millennium Stadium to host the UEFA Champions League final in 2003 and 2014, but had lost out to Old Trafford in Manchester and Hampden Park in Glasgow respectively.
