Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cleveland Indian Satchel Paige became the first African-American to pitch in a Major League game in July 1948. He faced the Chicago White Sox in his first complete game start in August 1948. What was the outcome of the game?

Answer: Paige threw a 5-0 shutout against the White Sox.

After playing in the Negro Leagues with an undocumented win count of over 2,000, Paige signed with the Cleveland Indians on July 7, 1948, and he mase his debut in relief two days later. After some relief appearances, Satchel started his first Major League game on August 3, defeating the Cleveland Indians, 5-3. He would get his first complete game ten days later against the White Sox.
2. How many Triple Crowns were hit in the 1960s?

Answer: 2

Baltimore Oriole Frank Robinson batted for the Triple Crown in 1966. Carl Yastrzemski hit the Triple Crown in 1967 with the Red Sox. There were 14 Triple Crowns hit in the 20th Century ranging from four hit in the 1930s, to one in the 1950s (Mickey Mantle).
3. Which 21st Century team was the first in history to hit three grand slams in one game?

Answer: New York Yankees

The St Louis Browns and Milwaukee Braves did not exist past the 1970s. It was August 25, 2011, when the Yankees were playing host to the Oakland Athletics. Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano, and Russell Martin helped the team into the record books with the three grand salamis. The Yankees won the game 22-9. The Yankees also had 21 hits in the game.
4. Which Major League ballpark in 2012 had two perfect games thrown in the season?

Answer: Safeco Field, Seattle

Both Briggs and Ebbets were long gone for Major League Baseball in the 21st Century. On April 21, 2012, Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox threw a perfecto against the Mariners. On August 15, Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez threw a 1-0 perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

This was the first time in baseball history that any ballpark had two perfect games thrown in the same season.
5. Who was the last player in the 20th Century to steal 100+ bases in a season?

Answer: Vince Coleman

Coleman would be the last to steal 100, and was the last to do it three times. He stole 100+ three consecutive times from 1985-1987. Vince played in 13 seasons and stole 752 overall. He retired in 1997 and watched his record follow well into the 21st Century for stealing 100 bases in a season.
6. The famous number 3 of the New York Yankees was Babe Ruth, and he wore the number for many seasons in the pinstripes. When he was given his release from the Yankees to join the Boston Braves in 1935, who took the number 3 and wore it for the Yankees in 1935?

Answer: George Selkirk

The others weren't Yankees even in the 1940s. Outfielder George Selkirk was in his second season with the Yankees in 1935. In 1934 he wore the number 1, then changed to number 3 when Ruth packed his bags and moved on to the Boston Braves. George was a nine-season career Yankee from 1934-1942.

Although he made the All-Star team twice and he did go to six World Series and won five, he still couldn't tie the shoelaces on Ruth's cleats.
7. The New York Yankees went to five and won five consecutive World Series titles from 1949-1953. Which American League team stopped that streak by winning the American League pennant in 1954?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The other answer options did not exist in the 1950s in the American League. The Indians won 111 games in 1954 behind the bats of Bobby Avila and Al Rosen along with the arms of Early Wynn and Bob Lemon. Cleveland won the AL pennant by eight games over the Yankees. The Indians went on to lose the World Series to the New York Giants four games to none.
8. Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play in the Major Leagues in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. From that moment and through the 1950s, which Major League team was the last to roster and play an African-American in a regular season game?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

It wasn't until July 21, 1959, when Red Sox fans watched their team be the last to play an African-American player in a game. The player was 25-year old rookie Pumpsie Green. He did not bat in the game but was used as a pinch-runner and then played shortstop. He batted .233 and hit a home run in his 50 games in the season.
9. Who was the first player in history to hit over 300 triples?

Answer: Sam Crawford

Crawford was an outfielder and teammate of Ty Cobb with the Detroit Tigers. This was a well documented rivalry as the two hated each other. Crawford led the American League six times in triples, and throughout the entire 20th Century, Sam was the only player to top the 300-mark with 309.

He was also the AL MVP runner-up in 1914 to Eddie Collins of the Philadelphia Athletics. Cobb was second in the century with 295. Crawford was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1957. Sam outdid Cobb in life as Cobb died in 1961, then Crawford in 1968 at the age of 88.
10. This franchise keeps setting records every year for attendance. In 2015, they were the only franchise in history to have at least 1,000,000 fans watch them play in every season for 70 consecutive seasons. Which 2015 team was this?

Answer: Dodgers

The Dodgers were in Brooklyn when the streak began in 1945 by drawing 1,059,220 at Ebbets Field. The move to Los Angeles in 1958 didn't stop the fans at all. They played at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for four seasons before moving into Dodger Stadium in 1962.

The Yankees had a streak themselves but took a backseat to the Dodger franchise. In 1946 they began a 1,000,000 fan season streak but it stopped in 1972 when the team failed to hit the million mark.
