Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Both of these greats were born within three years of each other in 1931 and 1934. Which had a born name of 'Jr.' at the end?

Answer: Willie Mays

Willie Howard Mays Jr, was almost three years older than Henry Louis Aaron. Ironically, they debuted in the Major Leagues three years apart, retired three years apart, and were inducted into the Hall of Fame three years apart also.
2. Which of the two greats went to the most World Series?

Answer: Willie Mays

Mays went to four in his great days. After winning the Rookie of the Year in 1951, he stretched his season with his first World Series. The Giants lost the series to the Yankees. He appeared in three more in 1954, 1962, and 1973. Mays earned one World Series ring. Hank only went to two promised land appearances.

His 1957 season MVP helped the Braves defeat the Yankees. His second appearance was in 1958, in a revenging loss to the Yankees.
3. Which of these great sluggers won the most season home run titles in their career?

Answer: They both won four

Hank's four came in 1957, 1963, 1966, and 1967. He never hit reached the 50 plateau, but ironically matched his jersey number 44, four times in his career. The 'Say Hey Kid' on the other hand won four crowns also, and reached the 50 plateau twice. The amazing thing about Mays' 50 home run seasons, is that they came 10 years apart in 1955 and 1965. Willie's other two crowns were in 1962 and 1964.
4. Who hit their 600th home run first?

Answer: Willie Mays

In 1969, Mays hit only 13 home runs in the season. His 13th was the 600 milestone, all hit with the Giants. Aaron reached his 600 plateau in 1971 with the Braves. Willie retired with 660, while Hank hit 755 in his career.
5. Which of the two played their entire career with the same franchise?

Answer: Neither of them did

After 20 loyal seasons with the New York and San Francisco Giants, Willie played in 19 games in 1972 before being traded to the New York Mets for pitcher Charlie Williams and cash. Mays played 20 of his 22 seasons with the Giants, and retired in 1973. Hank Aaron played 21 of his 23 seasons with the Milwaukee, then Atlanta Braves. Aaron spent his final two seasons in 1975 and 1976 in a Milwaukee Brewer uniform.
6. Both Aaron and Mays went to more than 20 consecutive all-star games in their career, an absolute amazing accomplishment. Who appeared in the most?

Answer: They both appeared in 24

What an amazing accomplishment to compliment the greatness of Major League baseball. Mays appeared in 24 of the stars' game from 1954-1973 and Hammerin' Hank appeared in 24 from 1955-1975. Mays was voted the All-Star MVP twice in 1963 and 1968, while Aaron never won the award. The All-Star MVP Award began in 1962.
7. Which of these two greats had the higher jersey number?

Answer: Hank Aaron

Aaron won this one by wearing the number 44. Mays wore the number 24, which has been depicted in his historical over-the-shoulder World Series catch in 1954 against the Cleveland Indians' Vic Wertz. Both players retained their numbers after moving to a different team late in their career.
8. Who hit the most extra inning home runs in their career?

Answer: Willie Mays

Mays set a record for hitting 22 extra inning game home runs. Amazingly, Willie also accomplished something that no other player had ever done. He hit a home run in every single inning up to the 16th inning in different extra inning games.
9. The season Runs Batted In title went to which player the most?

Answer: Hank Aaron

Ironically, Willie never won a RBI crown, even though he hit 40+ home runs in a season six times in his career. He was a runner-up twice. Mr. Aaron won four RBI titles. When he retired in 1976, he was on top of the pole with 2297 career RBIs. Hank was the third player in history to reach the 2000 RBI plateau, after Cap Anson and the great Babe Ruth.

It had been 70 years that nobody reached that goal.
10. Who was inducted into the Hall of Fame first?

Answer: Willie Mays

To think that neither of these baseball greats would not have made it into the Hall, would compare with the earth having no oceans. Retiring three seasons before Aaron, Mays was inducted three years before Aaron joined the Hall. Willie was inducted by 95% of the vote, and joined both Willie Giles and Hack Wilson in 1979. Aaron was voted in with 98% of the vote in 1982, and was inducted along with Frank Robinson, Happy Chandler, and Travis Jackson.
