Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who had the dubious distinction of being the first person to be ejected twice in World Series play?

Answer: Bobby Cox

The others were never ejected. Cox had his first ousting in 1992 in a game against the Blue Jays, for arguing a call on a batter's check swing. His record-setter was in 1996 against the Yankees for arguing a call on a stolen base. Both World Series ended up in losses for Cox's Braves. Cox, as the manager of the Braves, had set some records during the regular season for ejections also.
2. Which quick-tempered St. Louis pitcher was finally ejected after arguing numerous ball and strikes in game seven of the 1985 World Series?

Answer: Joaquin Andujar

All the others listed were Cardinals at one point, but all retired before 1985. Game seven of the series found the Kansas City Royals score six runs in the fifth inning, enroute to a 11-0 shutout and series winning game. Andujar was the third of four pitchers used in the fifth inning.

The Royals were down three games to one, then ran three straight victories for the World Series title of 1985.
3. Still feeling sour from the 1951 season, and giving up the winning home run that knocked the Dodgers from a World Series, this pitcher found himself in the 1952 World Series also. But, this time he was ejected from the bench in game seven, and never even got to play in the series! Who was this hard-luck pitcher?

Answer: Ralph Branca

Branca was the pitcher who gave up the historical 'shot heard around the world' in 1951 to Giant Bobby Thomson. The Dodgers and Giants tied during the regular season, then the Dodgers lost the three-game playoff. Ralph never threw a pitch in the '52 World Series, and was ejected for terrorizing the umpire from the bench.

The Yankees won game seven 4-2, and the series four games to three.
4. Even Major League baseball has flip-flopped for decades on an 'official' decision regarding a player in the 1934 World Series. This player in his first World Series, was in a fight in game seven. The following inning, the opposing fans were throwing debris from the stands to a point that the outfielder needed to be removed from the game. The player refused to leave, so the umpires 'removed him for his own protection'. Ejection or removal, who was this St. Louis Cardinal?

Answer: Joe Medwick

The others were all Cardinals in 1934, but only Joe Medwick was an outfielder. It was a close series until Dizzy Dean took the mound for the Cardinals in game seven at Navin Field, home of the Detroit Tigers. Dean threw a six-hit 11-0 shutout to win it for the Cardinals. Medwick hit .379 with 11 hits in the series. Joe had another chance in a World Series in 1941 with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but lost to the Yankees.
5. The 1976 World Series pitted the 102-60 Cincinnati Reds against the New York Yankees. Which Yankee manager in his second season in New York, was ejected in game four after throwing baseballs on to the field?

Answer: Billy Martin

The other managers never helmed the New York Yankees. The Reds embarrassed the Yankees four games to none in the series. To make matters worse, the final game was a 7-2 Reds victory in the 'house that Ruth built'.
6. Which was the first Major League baseball team to have five of their own ejected in World Series play?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

First baseman Frank Chance and catcher Tom Needham were the firsts to go in the 1910 series against the Athletics. Chance was booted in game three and Needham took the encore in game four. The Cubs lost the series in five games. Next sent to the showers were three Cubs on October 4, 1935.

It was game three in the series against the Tigers, which manager Charlie Grimm along with two players who never got to play in the series were ejected. Those two who ejected for harrassment from the dugout were Woody English, an infielder, and outfielder Tuck Stainback.
7. Who was the first person ever to be ejected from a World Series game?

Answer: Hughie Jennings

The others never went to a World Series game in their career. Although listed as a player/manager, Jennings played in only one regular season game, and did not play in the series. It was game two against the Cubs of Chicago when the second base umpire had enough of the Tiger manager.

The Cubs won the series four games to none and a tie in game one. Jennings managed his way to four World Series but came up empty in each one.
8. Which Washington Senator was ejected in his only World Series, and was the first ejected for bumping an umpire in 1933?

Answer: Heinie Manush

The others were never Washington Senators. Manush was third in voting for the MVP in 1933 and second for batting in his stellar season. After hitting .336 in the regular season, Heinie batted only .111 in the series. The outfielder was ejected in game four of which the New York Giants won the series, four games to one.
9. In the 1959 World Series, which batting coach was ejected for arguing ball and strikes with the home plate umpire?

Answer: Chuck Dressen

The others were all in charge of a team in 1959. After managing the Dodgers to the World Series in 1952 and 1953, Dressen was the batting coach under Dodger manager Walter Alston in 1959, in the series against the White Sox. Dressen was ejected in game six, the final game in which the Dodgers closed out the series against Chicago.
10. In a strange event in the 1909 World Series against the Tigers and Pirates, a Tiger pitcher was batting and called for time-out to talk to the third base coach. The umpire, an impatient one, ordered the batter back to the plate. Five seconds later and still talking to the base coach, the batter was ejected from the game! Who was the player?

Answer: Bill Donovan

The others never played for either the Pirates or Tigers. This was game seven of the 1909 series. After throwing a complete game win in game two, many think that the umpire was on the take by ejecting Donovan in game seven, to ensure Pittsburgh would win the series. The Pirates won the series.
