Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, what uncomfortable task is Captain Archer undergoing?

Answer: Posing for a formal photograph

Capt. Archer grumpily poses in his chair while Commander Tucker snaps pictures. The interruption by Lieutenant Reed of an anomaly on the ship's sensors is a welcome distraction for Archer, but Trip still manages to snap a photo of the Captain as he is gazing out the viewscreen... "The Captain in Command," Trip exclaims.

Scott Bakula played the role of Captain Jonathan Archer, Commander Charles Tucker III was played by Connor Trinneer, and Lieutenant Malcolm Reed was portrayed by Dominic Keating.
2. Sensors pick up a planet where one shouldn't be - in deep space nowhere near a star system. Upon investigation, the crew discovers that there IS life on the planet. How is this possible?

Answer: Concentrated around numerous vents of hot gas from the planet's interior

Finding a diverse animal population on the planet draws Ensign Sato to ask, "How is that possible?" and Ensign Mayweather to inquire, "Shouldn't the surface be frozen solid?" These questions are explained by Sub-Commander T'Pol.

Areas on the planet have vents that are bringing hot gases from the planet's interior. The plant and animal life surrounds these zones like so many oases in a desert.

Ensign Hoshi Sato was played by Linda Park, Ensign Travis Mayweather was played by Anthony Montgomery, and Jolene Blalock portrayed Sub-Commander T'Pol.
3. In addition to finding life, a spaceship is also discovered on the planet's surface. Which four crew members are on the away team that descends to investigate?

Answer: Archer, T'Pol, Reed and Sato

Once the away team exits the shuttlepod, they make their way through dense jungle to the location of the alien ship. Capt. Archer comments that the jungle reminds him of the New Zealand rainforest where he earned his wilderness merit badge as an Eagle Scout.

When they arrive at a campsite by the spaceship, the team splits up to search for the alien ship's crew. T'Pol and Reed get attacked while they are searching, as the alien hunters thought they were animals, but the situation quickly resolves itself, and everyone gathers together at the camp.
4. The away team finds a campsite near the spaceship, and they quickly encounter the ship's owners - a hunting party. What race are they?

Answer: Eska

The away team learn from the three hunters that their species is called 'Eska', and that their people's hunting parties have been coming to the rogue planet for nine generations. No mention is made of where their home planet is, but it is evident that they are a comparably techologically-advanced species.

The Kazon, Ocampa, and Hirogen are all species of aliens that were introduced during the run of "Star Trek: Voyager".

The three Eska hunters were played by Conor O'Farrell (Burzaan), Eric Pierpont (Shiraht), and Keith Szarabajka (Damrus).
5. What is the name of the rogue planet, according to the hunters?

Answer: Dakala

The Eska hunters state that the rogue planet Dakala is no one's territory, but they do feel some level of ownership through their long history of using the planet as a hunting ground. They also claim that the prey on the planet is very dangerous and difficult to hunt.

The hunters themselves wear a type of camouflage called 'sensing cloaks' that prevents the wildlife from sensing their presence.
6. Intrigued by what type of game requires such high tech equipment to hunt, Captain Archer asks the aliens if he can join them on their next expedition.

Answer: False

It is actually Malcolm who asks to accompany the Eska hunters on their hunt the next 'day'. At first, Archer is hesitant about the idea, but Reed assures him, "I promise I won't kill anything, sir."

With an early morning expected, Archer decides to stay on the planet overnight. Malcolm and Hoshi return to the Enterprise, then Hoshi stays on board while Trip returns with Reed and the camping gear.
7. During the 'night', Captain Archer hears a voice that draws him into the jungle. When he follows it, what does he see?

Answer: A beautiful woman

There is something familiar about the woman that he sees, but Captain Archer can't think of why she is familiar. When he tells Trip, Malcolm and the hunters about what he saw, they don't believe him.

The next 'day', while Reed is on the hunt with the three aliens, Archer meets the woman again while he is out exploring around one of the steam vents. This time, he is able to talk to her before she disappears. She wants his help to stop the hunting of her species.

The mystery woman was played by Stephanie Niznik.
8. During the hunt the next 'day', one of the hunters (Burzaan) is injured by their prey, which they call a 'Wraith'. T'Pol administers a field dressing to staunch the bleeding.

Answer: False

Archer convinces the hunters that Dr. Phlox is the best option to help Burzaan, and Reed transports him up to the Enterprise. Phlox treats the wound with his usual skill, and also manages to find some cellular residue of the creature that attacked the Eska. The curious thing about the cells is that they are in a state of chromosomal flux and seemingly trying to mutate into something else.

Dr. Phlox was played by John Billingsley.
9. The hunters reveal that their prey - the Wraith - are shapeshifters that also have the ability to get inside their minds and sense their thoughts. This is what makes them such a formidable quarry. How are the hunters able to track them?

Answer: The Wraith emit a chemical signature when afraid

In the course of their discussion, T'Pol points out that the Wraith sound like intelligent, sentient beings. The Eska, countering her argument, state that their defensive capabilities are only instinctual, and that they are merely sophisticated animals.

Archer's experience actually talking with a Wraith in the form of his visionary woman proves the Eska wrong, but he doesn't reveal that the Wraith have asked him for help.

Dr. Phlox is able to develop a fix to mask the chemical signature given off by the Wraith, and while his solution does not prevent the Eska from trying to hunt them, it does level the playing field.
10. Captain Archer finally makes the connection between the form that the Wraith took to appear to him and why it seemed so familiar. It used his memory of a poem called "The Song of the Wandering Aengus" that his mother used to read to him. Which poet wrote the poem?

Answer: William Butler Yeats

Sally Archer - Jonathan's mother - would read "The Song of the Wandering Aengus" to him whenever he had trouble sleeping as a child. Capt. Archer created a picture in his mind of what the "glimmering girl With apple blossom in her hair" looked like, and this is the image that the Wraith used to communicate with him.

Here is the poem in its entirety:

"I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.

When I had laid it on the floor
I turned to blow the fire aflame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And some one called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.

Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun."
