Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The actor who played Ray Krebbs on "Dallas" was shown in the opening credits for the show - in its own unique three-way split of flash video - beginning with this second season. Who was that actor?

Answer: Steve Kanaly

It was Steve Kanaly who played Ray Krebbs for much of the entire series of "Dallas". Kanaly had modest success with various television parts; not surprisingly many of those were cowboy-type roles. Most likely, he would be remembered for his participation in the original "Dallas" series and its later (rebooted) series. Kanaly has credited both Barbara Bel Geddes and Larry Hagman (his co-stars of "Dallas") as being his mentors.

By the way, all four of the gentlemen given as possible answers were born the same year - 1946. Now that was a very good year!
2. J.R. was feeling the loss of the alliance with Mainwaring Oil since Lucy had cancelled her marriage to Kit Mainwaring and he did not hesitate to discuss it - even with the obviously despondent former bride-to-be. Bobby was a bit more sympathetic. What did he do for Lucy that made her feel much better?

Answer: He bought her a car

Lucy had wanted a car of her very own since she had earned her driver's license yet the Ewing family had felt she was not mature enough to have her own car. "Someone" had to drive her every where or, occasionally, she would "borrow" a car from one of the other family members. Bobby was very impressed with how Lucy had handled the break-up with Kit; he felt she was maturing and could have her own car. Lucy received a silver sports car - convertible, of course.

She was delighted!
3. J.R.'s troubles were not limited to the loss of the Mainwaring partnership. The OLM (Office of Land Management) had stopped test drilling at a site that Ewing Oil had hoped would be very productive for them. What report did the OLM use as an excuse to delay approval of that drilling?

Answer: Environmental Impact Report

When this show first aired - in March, 1979 - concerns about environment was an issue often mentioned in the media. For example, the first "Earth Day" was recognized in the USA in April of 1970, the Clean Air and Water Act was passed into law (in the USA) in 1972 and cartoons of that decade saw Woodsy Owl remind kids, "Give a Hoot, Don't Pollute".

In an effort to maintain its credibility, "Dallas" portrayed current issues to the maximum. Regular viewers would recall Cliff Barnes had accepted the appointment as Director of the OLM with this type of action in mind.

He used his position to delay the progress of many Ewing Oil projects simply by referencing the effect that drilling for oil could possibly have on the environment.
4. J.R. and Jock learned of the most recent drilling delay when their foreman, Bud Morgan, came to Ewing Oil from the drilling site in Midland, Texas. In this episode the character of Bud Morgan was played by another cowboy-type actor who would play the part of Clint Buchanan for many years (more than twenty!) on the day-time soap opera, "One Life to Live". Who was it?

Answer: Clint Richie

Clint Richie was no stranger to television when he played Bud Morgan for this episode of "Dallas". He had (small) roles in a variety of shows - "The Wild, Wild West" (1965-1966), "The High Chappell" (1970) and "Thunder" (1977). He played the character Messmore Garrett in the made-for-TV mini-series, "Centennial" (1977-1978).

His greatest success came with the part of Clint Buchanan, though, on the show, "One Life to Live". He enjoyed the part and earned a lot of fans and friends from his work. He loved his horses and enjoyed playing those cowboy roles.

Unfortunately, Clint Richie died from a blood clot after what appeared to be a successful pacemaker procedure early in 2009, at the age of 70. Too sad, too; he was said to have been a great friend to many people AND many four-legged animals, as well.
5. The recent delay of drilling for oil had J.R. and Jock very worried. They simply had to find a way to deter the actions of the OLM against Ewing Oil. Jock felt they could make some progress if they could convince Sam Culver to work the political machine in their favor. From the options given - and, those discussed in this episode - what was an office Sam Culver had held?

Answer: Governor of Texas

J.R. described Sam as "ex-governor, ex-speaker of the house, still in control of the party". Sam Culver was a politician extraordinaire; he may have retired but he still had enough clout to see his wishes granted - or, so the Ewings hoped. Jock and J.R. wasted no time in arranging lunch with Sam and that lead to an invitation for Sam and Mrs. Culver to join the Ewing family for dinner the following Saturday night.
6. Lucy was not the only resident of Southfork with concerns of the heart. Ray was still carrying a torch for country music singer and former girlfriend, Garnet McGee. Then Ray met Donna. She was deliberately reserved about sharing information with Ray about herself. Why?

Answer: Donna was married to Sam Culver

It had been some time since Ray had met anyone who made him feel as hopeful about his future as Donna did but she was a bit "mysterious" (as he phrased it), at least at first. Of course, Donna knew she was married to Sam. She also knew Jock and J.R. were pampering Sam and her in hopes for some quid pro quo but she did not know the handsome, thoughtful cowboy to whom she had recently become attracted was the ranch foreman of the Ewing's ranch, Southfork.

She would learn all the details far too abruptly - thanks to J.R.
7. The Ewings entertained the Culvers with dinner at Southfork; yet, Sam was reluctant to give J.R. the nod of approval J.R. had hoped would come. Not to be dissuaded, J.R. was determined he would find a way to convince Sam Culver to do his bidding. What did Sue Ellen mention after the dinner party that J.R. completely ignored?

Answer: Donna had a much better marriage than she (Sue Ellen) did

It was a very pensive moment in the bedroom of J.R. and Sue Ellen the evening after the Ewings entertained the Culvers. Sue Ellen - even with her liquor tainted judgment - realized what a rewarding relationship Donna and Sam enjoy. Her observation of how well Donna and Sam complement each other was totally unimportant to J.R.

The only comment J.R. would make was insinuating their (Donna and Sam's) sex life must be lacking. Yet his only concern was to learn something that he could use to sway things his way.
8. "Dallas" seemed to feature an abundance of talented guest stars. Another supporting actor who appeared in this episode was well known for his parts in many of the western genre shows. It was John McIntire; he appeared on film - movies, then movies and/or television - in every decade from the 1940s thru the 1990s. Who did John McIntire play in this episode?

Answer: Sam Culver, Donna's husband

John McIntire played the part of Sam Culver perfectly. He had decades of experience in his repertoire. He was described by imdb.com as: "... one of television and film's most durable supporting players of western settings ...". At this time this episode was filmed the veteran actor was (approx.) 72 years old.

The character of Donna Culver mentions she is 28. Although, Sam does not mention his exact age the difference is very apparent. The actress who played Donna was Susan Howard; she was (approx.) 35 when this was filmed.

In this episode Donna also said she was from Marshall, Texas; Susan Howard was born and raised in Marshall, Texas.
9. Although Lucy seemed elated with her gift from Bobby her friends were convinced she was not as much fun to be around as she had usually been. Lucy and three of her girlfriends spent an afternoon sunbathing at the Southfork pool where the three guests were busy planning a party for later that evening. Lucy was not interested. What did they offer her to change her mind?

Answer: A pill - that was most likely an amphetamine, i.e., "upper"

Lucy's friends convinced her to take the pill. All three of them admitted that they regularly took the pills either to help them lose weight or to make them feel better. The girls even called Lucy "chicken" to get her to take the pill. Lucy was hesitant but decided to give it try. As if this family did not already have enough issues with substance abuse!
10. Ray was very happy with his relationship with Donna. They had agreed to proceed with caution. Ray invited Bobby and Pam to join him and his new lady-friend for drinks at his favorite hang-out. When Bobby and Pam arrived at the Longhorn Bar they saw Ray and Donna together before either Ray or Donna saw them. What did they do?

Answer: They immediately left without letting Ray or Donna know they had seen them

Bobby and Pam did not want to embarrass either Ray or Donna. Ray had been friends - true friends with Bobby and Pam a long time. Bobby and Pam felt sure that neither Ray nor Donna could have known about the other or else there would have been no romantic involvement.
11. J.R. had faith in his own ability to learn enough about anyone to be able to capitalize on an opportunity when it presented itself. It was his modus operandi. He knew Donna would be no exception. What happened that proved J.R. was - once again - right to have faith in his own abilities, insidious as they were?

Answer: He heard Bobby and Pam mention (to each other) that Ray and Donna are seeing each other

Bobby and Pam decided Bobby should meet with Donna privately and talk about her relationship with Ray. (As fate would have it, Bobby and Donna had been classmates in college - before she met Sam Culver.) J.R. overheard Bobby and Pam as they planned Bobby's meeting with Donna when Pam said, "Well, she couldn't think it was about her and Ray ..." That was the opportunity J.R. had wanted and his delight was not hidden.
12. Sue Ellen was drinking to an excess every day. Seemingly, she ignored she was advanced in her pregnancy. Her drinking was not without notice - or, without repercussions. Other members of the Daughters of the Alamo wanted her to resign her position as their president. Who was asked - by the other ladies - to tell Sue Ellen that she needed to resign?

Answer: Miss Ellie

Sue Ellen's drinking had become apparent to everyone in her life. Her marriage to J.R. Ewing had afforded many privileges, among those she was the current president of the club for women of the highest social standing, The Daughters of the Alamo. After several serious blunders at a very important event several of the members felt it was in Sue Ellen's best interest to resign her position.

They were kind (or, insincere) enough to relate her blunders to her pregnancy and insisted she would be reinstated "when she was feeling better", when they asked Miss Ellie to explain it to Sue Ellen.
13. J.R. did his usual espionage work as he followed Ray and Donna to a local motel where he saw the two of them go into a room together. He wasted no time in getting Donna alone the next day to let her know he would tell Ray all about her if she did not convince Sam to vote against the OLM and, thus, oust Cliff from his position. What did Donna say to J.R.?

Answer: "Do you think I care if you tell Ray?"

From her mannerisms and voice, Donna did not care for J.R. This ultimatum from him seemed to concern her but NOT scare her. Even when J.R. challenged her remark with his own, "I read people pretty well. Yes, I think you care quiet a lot. Matter of fact I'm banking on it." she appeared not to be intimidated. We would soon learn Donna - and Sam - may be more solid than J.R. could have imagined.
14. Donna called Ray and asked him to meet her. They did not meet at any of their usual "out-of-the-way" places. Donna had something very serious to tell Ray. She told him she was married. Married to Sam Culver. And, that she had told Sam about her affair with him. What else did Donna tell Ray?

Answer: That she had asked Sam for a divorce and she was leaving Dallas

Donna seemed to have true feelings of love and concern for Ray. She would not deny how much Sam had meant to her. As she told Ray, she loved Sam but she had never been in love with Sam. She was going to leave Dallas - for a while. She told Ray she hoped that when she returned that he would be waiting for her.

He said that he would. She did NOT mention anything about J.R. or his threat to her.
15. The Ewing family breakfast was interrupted with a phone call - for J.R. - from Sam Culver. Sam told J.R. that after a long talk with Donna, she had convinced him to support the OLM and Cliff Barnes. Sam believed both were doing what was best for Texas. What was J.R.'s retort?

Answer: He would like to talk with Sam in private. He thought he could convince Sam to change his mind.

Well, ol' J.R. just knew he would tell Sam about Donna's extramarital affair and then get Sam's support and his vote against the OLM. Sam was a tough old guy, though. His years in politics had served him well. In other words, he was prepared for J.R. When J.R. offered his suggestion (that they meet in private), Sam's reply was simple and short: "There's nothing you can tell me, (that) Donna hasn't." J.R. got his message - loud and clear.

At the same breakfast, Ray approached Bobby to ask for his help in starting to build the house he had always wanted.

It would appear his break-up with Donna may have a "happy ending", after all. Or, at least a happy-for-the-time-being.
