2.4 "Bypass" Trivia Quiz

Interesting title for this episode. From what we have learned of J.R. and his approach to life, where others are concerned there is no bypass - only roadblocks for those who are in his way. As with most TV titles there is probably more to it.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This episode opened with magnificent and, often, panoramic views of the Ewing ranch, Southfork. It was round-up time and as all modern day cowboys did, the Ewings used their helicopter to find the stray cows. Who seemed determined to work the hardest on horseback, though?

Answer: Jock

Ray carried a radio to communicate with the helicopter but it was Jock who insisted that he would ride back and bring home the strays. When Ray and Jock did return to the ranch, Bobby was there waiting for his dad. Ray asked Bobby to try to convince Jock to take it a bit easier but Bobby had other things to discuss with Jock - J.R's approach to their partnership at Ewing Oil.
2. After Pam finished her morning swim she joined Bobby who was working by the family pool. When Bobby asked Pam her plans for the day she told him she was planning to have lunch with Liz Craig. Who was Liz Craig?

Answer: Pam's boss when she worked at a clothier

Bobby expressed mixed emotions about the possibility of Pam going (back) to work for Liz, while Pam remained uncommitted. Pam did admit to Bobby it was mainly an excuse to "avoid another one of Sue Ellen's boring luncheons". The part of Liz Craig became a recurring role played by Barbara Babcock who would go on to be featured in many favorite (American) TV shows.

A few of those are "Hills Street Blues" (1981), "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" (1993) and "Pasadena" (2001).
3. Even with his limited capabilities to learn ALL about Ewing Oil Bobby had managed to discover his family business owned a significant amount of undeveloped land. Bobby saw an opportunity to create a niche for himself. He called a friend in the commercial construction business and was on his way. To what other booming Texas city did Bobby go to meet with his friend?

Answer: Houston

J.R. had made every effort to keep Bobby clueless as to the business of Ewing Oil though Jock had made (and, intended for) them to be equal partners. Jock had an accurate assessment of the situation when he accused J.R. of "trying to make an office boy out of" Bobby. Bobby felt the only way he could stay involved in the family business was to diminish his contact with J.R.

He left for Houston to meet with his friend and discuss a new venture - the construction business.
4. Jock found J.R. on their front porch and confronted him about Bobby's place in Ewing Oil. The two men argued. There were more than heated words. What was the most moving result of this exchange?

Answer: Jock collapsed on the porch as he grabbed his chest

When Jock stopped talking mid-sentence, J.R. looked at him only to see him sinking to his knees, holding his chest and unable to speak. J.R. quickly realized he was the only other family member at the house and panicked. He managed to call the (telephone) operator and request an ambulance. Lucy arrived at the gate on horseback just in time to see the ambulance leave the ranch.
5. The Ewing women - Miss Ellie, Sue Ellen and Pam - joined J.R. at the hospital. Miss Ellie had contacted "the family doctor"; he was there, too. J.R. explained to them Jock had "some kind of seizure". After his examination the doctor-friend-of-the-family had a different assessment. What did he tell Miss Ellie was Jock's affliction?

Answer: Coronary insufficiency

Well, he was a good doctor - to be able to diagnose that from an exam room in a minor emergency center! Nonetheless, he recommended Jock be moved to Dallas Memorial where he could "do more testing". Of course, Miss Ellie agreed and Jock was on his way. J.R., Sue Ellen and Pam spent a few minutes bickering about what really caused Jock's collapse. Pam was the first family member to call it a "heart attack".
6. Pam and Bobby arrived at the hospital to find Sue Ellen and J.R. on the front landing. The bickering and blame game continued. Bobby shared a tender moment at Jock's bedside. What did Bobby then do to show he was doing what Jock would have wanted him to do?

Answer: Worked with Ray to finish the round-up

Bobby looked every bit the cowboy as he herded the cattle into the holding pens. He admitted to Ray it was time he learned more about the cattle business. Inside the ranch house Pam told Miss Ellie that Bobby was blaming himself for Jock's condition. Miss Ellie sweetly told her it was "nobody's fault" and then Miss Ellie sternly told Pam that it was up to her (Pam) to convince Bobby of that.
7. It would appear that not even a true family emergency could prevent J.R. from proceeding with his self-serving plans for Ewing Oil. Two of his business associates even followed him (J.R.) to where Jock was hospitalized. What did those two tell J.R. they wanted to have/see - given Jock's condition?

Answer: The infamous, top-secret red file(s)

The two associates were Jeb Amos and Willie Joe Garr, sons of men who had done business with Jock but (according to Jock) they were about as "trustworthy as two stepped on rattlesnakes". It was not mentioned how those two even knew about the red files since J.R. (as shown in previous episodes) had even prevented Bobby from having a look at them. Knowing J.R., if he agreed to share sensitive information with ANYONE it may not have been what it appeared to be.
8. Shady acquaintances of J.R.'s were (apparently) not the only ones to imagine "life after Jock". Who was shown to have been "practicing" for the day when the chain of command would be revised and there would be a new boss in town?

Answer: Sue Ellen

Sue Ellen, drink in hand, waltzed through the foyer of the ranch and acted as though she was receiving her guests as she ascended and descended the tall stairwell. Unbeknown to her, Pam was watching her. When Pam surprised Sue Ellen the two exchanged words. Miss Ellie appeared (unknown to either) just in time to hear Sue Ellen tell Pam, "When I do take over, the first thing I am going to do is throw you out". Miss Ellie made sure there was an embarrassing way for Sue Ellen to be brought back to reality. Thinking of Gary, odd that NO mention was made of trying to contact him during this entire family emergency.
9. The crux of concern was mentioned when J.R. met with Willie Joe and Jeb - in a more private setting. What was it that Jock had mentioned - time and time again - that had those three (seemingly) so troubled?

Answer: No one could ever drill for oil on Southfork

Willie Joe and Jeb were oil men who were aligned themselves against the huge oil conglomerate, The Cartel. They knew parts of Southfork was plentiful with oil and depended on J.R. to be their "ace in hole" for oil reserves. Yet, Jock and Miss Ellie were adamant that never would any part of Southfork be used for oil drilling. J.R. had to scramble to prove he would be able to "deliver" when/if such was necessary.
10. The close family friend who was also one of Jock's doctors told Miss Ellie that Jock would need open heart surgery - a bypass graft - and the sooner, the better. Surgery was scheduled for that same morning. Miss Ellie and Jock had a few minutes to chat. What did Jock say to Miss Ellie that made her cry?

Answer: "I love you"

Jock and Miss Ellie did talk about how important it was to both of them to "keep the family together". They talked about their lives together - past, present and future. When Jock said he had been trying to tell her something and then said, "I love you", Miss Ellie burst into tears.

While the hours passed during Jock's surgery Bobby shared with Pam his suspicions about J.R. and even had time to confront J.R. - with a warning about those suspicions.
