Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This episode opened with the Ewing family in their sitting room. It was not just another evening at Southfork, though. With toasts to be made and gifts to be opened, it was a special occasion. What?

Answer: Miss Ellie and Jock's wedding anniversary

Yes, it was a festive evening as the family joined Miss Ellie and Jock to celebrate their wedding anniversary. J.R., never one to miss the opportunity to make a snide comment to and/or about Pam, had a bit of egg on his face when he (J.R.) chastised Pam for omitting the card on one of the gifts for his parents when, indeed, it was his and Sue Ellen's gift that had no card on the outside.

But the very best line was from Jock, who exclaimed amid puzzled and curious expressions from the other family, "What the heck is it?" when he opened the gift from J.R. and Sue Ellen.

It was a statue - priceless artwork, no doubt.
2. It appeared that the lot was cast to put Pamela and Sue Ellen in competition with each other as to "favored daughter-in-law" status but neither of them had complete control over the situation. What was the thing that everyone mentioned but neither Pam nor Sue Ellen had been able to deliver - yet?

Answer: To have a baby - the next Ewing heir

Oh, yes, when Miss Ellie and Jock were given a photo album that was complete with family photos, the "baby talk" began, again. All it took were the cute pictures of little Lucy and the Ewings were longing to have another baby in the house. Jock reminded Sue Ellen that she and J.R. had been married seven years and no baby, while he stroked Bobby and Pam in an effort to persuade them get on the "make a baby" train.
3. After the celebration, Sue Ellen attempted to seduce J.R. She wore very sexy lingerie, spritzed perfume on herself, moved close to him and really did ALL she could - to no avail. All J.R. did was chastise her for drinking too much and, eventually, leave her crying in the driveway (still dressed in her provocative night gown). What did Sue Ellen yell at J.R. as he left in his Mercedes?

Answer: "This is last time you'll do that to me, J.R."

More than just marital intimacy was important to Sue Ellen; she was desperate to be the next daughter-in-law to have a Ewing heir, so desperate that she sought consolation - and, maybe the solution - from Ray who arrived at the ranch just in time to see J.R. leave. Ray's attempts to help Sue Ellen "go inside" only made her cling to him more.

The camera faded to black as they shared a deep, lingering kiss.
4. What a difference a day makes. The morning after Sue Ellen made her advances to him, Ray rode to the ranch to find Sue Ellen by the swimming pool with coffee and aspirin. In his attempt at more familiar conversation, what did Ray call her that gave Sue Ellen the opportunity to correct him - immediately and very sternly?

Answer: Sue Ellen

When Ray inquired as to her health and general composure for the day, he did call her "Sue Ellen", to which her only response was, "Mrs. Ewing. Mrs. Ewing, Ray." Ray reminded her (foolishly!) about "last night" and without even a glance his way, she let him know just how much it meant to her by responding, "I don't know what you're talking about" and walked toward the house.

This left Ray to grit his teeth and realize his worth among the Ewings - well, at least some of the family - one more time.
5. Miss Ellie and Sue Ellen discussed the option of adoption as the answer to Sue Ellen's dilemma. Sue Ellen learned from an adoption agency that it would take at least three years for her name to reach the top of the list for newborn babies. Somewhat dissuaded, Sue Ellen left the office. Unknown to Sue Ellen, though, the adoption agent made a telephone call about her. To whom?

Answer: An attorney, B.J. Connors

B.J. Connors (aka Buzz) agreed to call Sue Ellen. He and Cliff Barnes were together when Connors first met Sue Ellen. Cliff openly expressed his opinion to Connors as to "the kind of law he (Connors) practices" - we were led to believe somewhat less than always creditable. Also, Cliff was suspicious about Connors meeting with one of the Ewings. Connors dismissed Cliff BEFORE he and Sue Ellen went into the restaurant where he explained to her the legality of "private adoption" and how it worked for "people with enough money" - like Sue Ellen.
6. Sue Ellen was determined to become acquainted with the mother of the unborn baby she had arranged to buy. She made her way to Rita Briggs' apartment. In this episode, Rita was played by a fine young actress who may be better remembered by another claim to fame. Who is she?

Answer: Talia Balsam

She was the first wife of George Clooney. Talia Balsam and George Clooney were married (in Las Vegas, NV) in 1989; they divorced in 1993. She continued to act and has been featured in many movies and television programs. For example, for seven seasons she had the recurring role of (main character) Jack Malone's wife on the TV series, "Without A Trace" (2002). Talia is a part of the Hollywood (stage and screen) Van Patten family.
7. Pam decided to accept a job offer from her former boss, Liz Craig, and she made immediate plans to re-join the working class. In a private moment with his parents, Bobby told Miss Ellie and Jock of Pam's plans. Which (of the following) did Jock say to Bobby?

Answer: "What's she need a job for? Ewing women don't work."

Initially Bobby expressed his disapproval to Pam. Both of his parents commented that they had noticed that things had seemed to be a bit tense between him and Pam during the past few days. But when he was subjected to Jock's questioning, Bobby found himself defending Pam's decision.

His retort to Jock was, "Well, Daddy, Pamela doesn't consider herself a Ewing woman". Bobby showed his support even more affirmatively when he surprised Pam with a brand new Corvette and the concession, "If you had a job you couldn't keep borrowing my car all the time" and they zoomed down the drive - Pam at the wheel.
8. Sue Ellen quickly realized that more than just her purse strings had become attached to Rita, the mother of the baby she intended to "adopt" i.e., buy. She found the two of them had more in common than she could have ever imagined. What did Sue Ellen and Rita discuss that began the bonding process for both of them?

Answer: They both had been beauty pageant participants

Sue Ellen rented a furnished apartment and began to stockpile it with what she thought Rita would need but Rita could not have been more unappreciative. Then Sue Ellen discovered a photo of Rita in the Miss Teen Texas beauty pageant and two realized there was some common ground for them.

They celebrated their new found friendship with lunch and shopping where they (accidentally) encountered Pamela as she left Liz's shop.
9. Leave it to Lucy to set the wheels in motion for trouble whenever she can. She was very eager to tell J.R. about the numerous phone calls from "a Buzz Connors" for Sue Ellen. J.R. made a note of the name. What else did Lucy tell J.R. she had taken as a phone message for Sue Ellen?

Answer: A lady had called about an apartment Mrs. Sue Ellen had recently rented

Sue Ellen should have known that there was NO way to keep all of her arrangements to adopt baby a secret. Sue Ellen did not know Lucy had been so informative to J.R. but she did know that Pam had seen her with Rita and may have been suspicious enough to alert other family members. J.R. did not need anyone's else encouragement to unravel Sue Ellen's tight knit secrets.

In true J.R. form, he made plans of his own.
10. Sue Ellen took even more things to the apartment she had rented for Rita but Rita was no where to be found. Instead J.R. came into the apartment soon after Sue Ellen arrived and told her that Rita was on a bus to California. Sue Ellen left without a word to him, but back at the ranch she had a lot to say. Who did she blame for informing J.R.?

Answer: Pamela

Sue Ellen was furious with Pam. Sue Ellen knew that Pam had learned what she was doing. Sue Ellen accused Pam of trying to "make points" with the family. Of course, Pam tried to tell Sue Ellen that she had kept her secret. Sue Ellen packed some clothes to leave. J.R. stopped her by forcing himself on her - to make their own baby, "not somebody else's" as he vehemently told her. We were left to wonder if this disdain could become passion for the two of them.
