How did Ray discover the crash area? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. J.R. and Bobby arrived at Southfork in the Ewing family station wagon with Ray as their chauffeur. As both men walked toward the house all four of the Ewing women took a dramatic pause on the deck adjacent to their drive. Who was the first of the women to run toward the two men to give a big welcome home hug? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. This episode comes to a close with the entire family attending a memorial service for Johnny, the pilot of the family plane who did not survive the crash.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening scene of this episode showed the skyline of New York City where Pamela and Liz, her boss from the dress shop, were visiting during a (fashion) buying trip. We soon learned Pam was supposed to meet Bobby in another American city for a brief retreat. Where was Bobby?

Answer: New Orleans

Bobby had planned to surprise Pam with a visit to their honeymoon hotel but instead of meeting him in New Orleans, she and Liz were delayed in New York. That meant Bobby was stuck with J.R. who managed to ingratiate himself into Bobby's plans. J.R.'s intention was to interfere with Bobby's meeting for his (Bobby's) fledgling company, Ewing Construction Company. Pam's work conflict gave J.R. the ammunition to send a disparaging remark to Bobby about his marriage.
2. When Bobby and J.R. were ready to return to Dallas (Southfork) they learned of a severe storm that was moving directly into the same path as their private plane was to fly. It was recommended the intended departure be delayed until after the storm had passed. Who insisted that they go on to Dallas anyway?

Answer: J.R.

J.R. insisted to his pilot that they would be fine to "head north and stay around the edge of that storm". The pilot and Bobby exchanged their worried looks but boarded the plane for take-off. This prompted Bobby to say to J.R., "You think you have to run everything". J.R.'s response was, "That's my job. Running things, isn't it?" To which Bobby shot back with, "Well, run Ewing Oil and keep your nose out of my construction company".
3. Considering the Ewings' status in the community, service professionals, of course, visited Southfork - rather than a family member travel to an office. Who was at Southfork to see Jock while J.R. and Bobby were en route to the ranch?

Answer: Jock's physician

We heard more than just a bit of familiar banter between Jock and his physician during the examination. This exam was mostly a follow-up to Jock's recent heart attack and bypass surgery. (This complication was seen as the theme of a previous episode of the series).

In a serious moment the doctor did recommend that Jock "Go easy. If not for yourself, for Ellie". Although, Jock was very reluctant to do so, he finally admitted to Miss Ellie that the doctor had, indeed, recommended he "take it easy". Miss Ellie took this advice very seriously and her worried look (away from Jock's eyes) indicated she knew she had a difficult job if she were to limit Jock's stress.
4. While J.R. (and Bobby) were out of town, Sue Ellen decided to visit none-other-than Cliff Barnes - at his law office. What was her guise (excuse) to get to spend some time with him?

Answer: She wanted Cliff to help her adopt a baby

Cliff was more than willing to share some time with Sue Ellen - if for no other reason than to have "something" that belonged to J.R. Ewing as his own. Even if temporarily. This scene has a bit of blooper, too. As Sue Ellen asked Cliff to help her find the pregnant young lady who had agreed to allow Sue Ellen to adopt her baby. Sue Ellen mentioned J.R. had "sent her away ... he did not tell me" where.

In the previous episode, though, we the viewing audience saw and heard J.R. tell Sue Ellen that Rita Briggs (the pregnant young lady) was "on a bus to California". Well, I guess California is a big state ...
5. Indeed the storm proved too much for the small Ewing Oil airplane. With only J.R., Bobby and their pilot on board the plane lost "the electrical system" and "power" - according to the pilot and crashed. Miss Ellie learned the sad news from the airplane mechanic on their staff. Who are the first two people (in the Ewing "family") Miss Ellie told about the crash?

Answer: Lucy and Ray

Miss Ellie shared the sad news that the plane carrying J.R. and Bobby was "missing" in an area known as Cato Swamp with Lucy and Ray. Miss Ellie added her emphatic decision to keep the news from Jock as long as possible. Ray was sent to the airport to meet Pam's plane (Pam thought Bobby was coming to get her.) and Lucy was told to act as if nothing was out of the ordinary while Miss Ellie found Sue Ellen to tell her about the possible tragedy.
6. The Ewing family had their dinner and, as Miss Ellie had instructed, the women acted as if nothing was wrong. Although he suspected there was something awry, Jock appeared to have no clue of the actual impending tragedy. Later in the evening Miss Ellie answered the telephone only to be very upset by the caller. Who called Southfork?

Answer: A reporter who identified himself as being with the newspaper "The Dallas Press"

Miss Ellie abruptly ended the conversation with the reporter who called in an attempt to get her comments on the missing plane carrying her two sons. This alerted her that the news was then known beyond her closest circle of confidants. She immediately had Ray increase security around Southfork - no one was to get on the property unless invited by someone from the family.

A bit of blooper in this scene, the reporter told Miss Ellie that he had heard the Ewing company plane carrying her "two sons, J.R. and Robert" was missing. From most information and other situations in the series Bobby's legal name was "Bobby James Ewing". Odd that a reporter would refer to him as "Robert".
7. After the evening meal, Sue Ellen walked into the den and overheard Lucy on the telephone. From what she heard of Lucy's conversation Sue Ellen was very upset. Whom did Lucy call?

Answer: The casino in Las Vegas where Lucy's father, Gary, had been working

Sue Ellen was furious with Lucy when she heard Lucy was trying to find Gary. Sue Ellen grabbed the phone from Lucy and disconnected the call. Of course, Lucy knew just how to "push Sue Ellen's buttons". Lucy reminded her that it was she (Lucy) who was (in Lucy's words) "a born Ewing" and that Sue Ellen had no claim to Southfork should something happen to J.R.

The two women almost came to a serious physical confrontation but stopped when Lucy deflected an intended slap in the face from Sue Ellen.
8. In spite of every effort otherwise, Jock did learn about the possible fate of J.R. and Bobby. Jock's knowledge of the accident proved to be most helpful in the discovery of the crashed and (then) missing airplane. Jock sent Ray on a search of his own using the Ewing Oil helicopter. How did Ray discover the crash area?

Answer: There were three small, separate, yet contiguous fires burning in the swamp

Jock told Ray there was something he (Jock) had taught J.R. when the two of them hunted and fished together: How to signal for help should he ever be lost or injured in the woods. Jock knew J.R. would try to signal (as he said) with "three of anything: shots, fires, mirror flashes" Jock knew this information would be essential as Ray began his own search for the Ewing sons. Those three fires were what Ray spotted from the air. Ray called Jock with the wonderful news that both J.R. and Bobby would be coming home.
9. J.R. and Bobby arrived at Southfork in the Ewing family station wagon with Ray as their chauffeur. As both men walked toward the house all four of the Ewing women took a dramatic pause on the deck adjacent to their drive. Who was the first of the women to run toward the two men to give a big welcome home hug?

Answer: Pamela

Fittingly, Pam was the first who rushed to greet the men as they returned. In this episode we had seen that of all the Ewing women, Pamela was the most unselfish with her reactions to what could have been terrible news and a life altering situation. Miss Ellie was obviously distraught about losing her sons but focused more on Jock's survival than the two who might have been lost. Sue Ellen worried only of her own fate should she no longer be "Mrs. J.R. Ewing". Lucy portrayed the lonely, spoiled brat who saw Bobby and J.R.'s disappearance as an opening for her own father, Gary, to return to the family and her. Pam's concern and compassion had been for those around her.

She was the ONE who was hopeful, faithful and gracious - well, at least, in this episode.
10. This episode comes to a close with the entire family attending a memorial service for Johnny, the pilot of the family plane who did not survive the crash.

Answer: False

We the viewing audience were not told the fate of the pilot - whether he lived or died - during this episode. Only Bobby and J.R. were with Ray when they returned to the ranch. Not to say, though, that they could have taken the pilot to his home before they returned to the ranch. We certainly hope so.
