Dern, born on February 10th, 1967 in Los Angeles, California guest starred as Tabitha Fortis, the U.S. Poet Laureate. She played the role for just this episode. She has starred in the films "Jurassic Park III", "I Am Sam" and "Rambling Rose."

The episode began with President Bartlet answering a reporter's question about what he would be discussing on that Thursday so he mentioned he would talk about energy dependence versus independence and cleaner-burning fuels. He stated how energy dependent automobiles were very vulnerable to price hikes. Toby was nearby and flashed the word "innovation" at President Bartlet so he would mention innovation through newer energy technology.
